Winner of the Anthropologie e-Gift Card and Cravings?

Congratulations to Keiko for winning the Anthropologie e-gift card! I hope you get something good!

This question and answers set for the giveaway was my very favorite. I feel like you can learn so much about someone through their pets. And it was so nice to get to know each of you better. I do not typically respond to comments on giveaway posts (since I manually type in each person’s name and then go back and recount and recount to make sure I am correct, it would be too confusing), but I will be responding to each entrant throughout the week because your comments touched my heart so much. And I have so much to say to each of you! It will take me awhile, so please bear with me. : )

Today my daughter turns fifteen! Fifteen! It is a big age. In some cultures, it is the age of becoming a woman. I am going to bury my head in the sand for a bit and pretend that that is not happening.

The only thing she has requested today is for me to come up with an elaborate cracker spread. I was at a loss as to what to do, but yesterday I met a woman who majored in cheese and crackers. She knew every kind of dip and what kind to get. It was kismet. She should really consider getting her doctorate. The lady knows her stuff. I will Instagram some pictures of what I make my daughter today. I am going to do my best to make it special, along with some surprises (horseback riding lessons! Be still, my heart). Since she is sleeping until noon and will not read this post, I can write that.

I also got her this cool ring. Guess who is going to steal borrow it?

Happy Birthday My Sweet Girl!

This month I splurged on a few items. I bought this jacket and I cannot recommend it enough. It is amazing. I own it in brown but I love every single color it comes in. I have a post coming up about it next week, but it is just my favorite thing ever. Eighty degrees in California? Leather jacket. I scoffed at all of the sandals I saw traipsing past as I sweated in enjoyed my find.

I am pretty content this month. I am not really craving much of anything. Especially after all of my indulgences. Burp. There is this coat that I think is gorgeous, but I bought a dress last week (it is on my Instagram) when I went to a holiday workshop. I decided instead of making a list of things I am craving, I am going to post things I am glad I all ready own and that I am excited to wear this coming cold season:

IMG_0431.JPG

The Miles of Henley Dress. I own this in three colors (previous posts here and here), so it is fair to say that I recommend it. I think it is so pretty and I love that there are a variety of ways to layer it. I also like the price.

IMG_0425.JPG

I think this season is the season of grey tights. I bought my fleece lined ones (also in black in the picture) from Nordstrom Rack this week for $8 each. And the Hue grey cable tights were $11. I am excited to wear them. The fleece lined ones are so cozy. I have tried them on all ready.

IMG_0432.JPG

The First Kiss Dress. I wear this dress all of the time. I bought it in the spring of 2013. I can wear it for three seasons in Southern California. And I have. When I purchased mine, it came in only one pattern and now it comes in a few more. I will style it in an upcoming post. I have the black and white version and I hope they bring that color combo back. It is my favorite.

IMG_0430.JPG

I will be wearing my Anthropologie Ponte Bell Skirts (previous posts here and here) with tights (possibly the ones above) all season. The brand is Girls From Savoy. Their online store happens to have a skirt that looks like the same skirt in different colors. I have no idea if it is actually the same shape, only that it looks like it might be. It is on sale and available here.

IMG_0426.JPG

Also, my vintage boots. I have seen them on eBay for a little more than what I paid for them at the flea market ($50) but they have lasted for years and years (they are probably older than me) and I think a vintage pair of boots should be in every girl’s closet. I own three pairs, but these are my favorite.

What is your seasonal favorite that you all ready own? I plan on combining and layering my collection of slips with cardigans all winter. Are you craving anything? Did you get to one of Anthropologie’s Holiday Workshops yet?

Anthropologie Summer Reviews

I was in San Diego the other day and somehow I was able to convince my husband that I needed to go to Anthropologie. Not wanted but needed. So he took me. And I went.

And I tried some stuff on. Not all of the stuff, but a lot of the stuff. Enough of the stuff.

I even broke my word and bought a stuff.

It was an accident.

It tricked my sale-only-heart with its full-priced-gleaming-only-one-left-in-my-size-and-I-shall-perish-if-it-is-not-in-my-closet-sheen.

I think next time I shall bring sunglasses.

That sheen is tricky stuff.

I need immunity.

Is there a hidden idol for that? Best look in these clothes to see if it’s there:

20140801-201639.jpg

First, what did I wear? It is the Talisman Peasant Dress I bought on sale with my birthday discount and a gift card.

It is easy.

And I like that. Especially when I am leaving the house at six in the morning.

Of course after I left Anthropologie and my son and husband picked me up, my son looked me up and down and said, “Have you been wearing that all day?”

“Um, yes,” I said. “And yesterday.” TMI?

“Oh. I thought maybe you accidentally stole it.”

Wha-a-a?!

Then I remembered the conversation we had the day before when the two ladies at the shoe store were distraught over a shoe box that someone had switched their old shoes in for the new pair.

But I had to ask him, “You don’t think I would do that, do you?”

“No. But I can see you accidentally doing that.”

Oi.

20140801-201440.jpg

First I tried on the most gorgeous dress. It is the Azure Lace Dress. I have had my eye on this dress for awhile. I love the color.

Love it.

This is the dress my husband liked the best out of all of the things I tried on.

Of course, I am waiting for sale and I also have the size six petite in my wishlist for a bit of a shorter cut after I saw this blogger wear it that way. I think it is genius. The picture above is a regular size six.

20140801-201601.jpg

Then I tried on a dress the salesgirl put in my dressing room. It was my size and I loved the color, so I figured, why not? I did not try the other neon green dress she left.

I really liked the Azalea Stitched Dress. Not enough to purchase it, because it was not completely “me,” but enough that I did caress it a bit in the dressing room.

What? You know you do it, too.

20140801-201918.jpg

20140801-201952.jpg

Then I tried on the prettiest dress called the Nanda Maxi Dress. I adored it (a nicer way of saying I caressed it, too… I might have a problem). It still cost a little too much for me, because it is sleeveless and the top does not quite sit right. But it did get added to my wishlist. I am wearing a size small. The Suzani pattern inspiration is gorgeous.

20140801-202347.jpg

I admired the color of The Rokin Dress online and it did not disappoint in real life.

20140801-202419.jpg

I will say if you are busty or hippy you might want to size up. I am wearing an 8 in these pictures. It is a sturdy dress and I love the pattern. The bodice is a bit odd as shown in the previous picture.

20140801-202444.jpg

I really like it paired with a Pilcro Denim Jacket. I am wearing a medium and it is the size I would purchase.

20140801-203423.jpg

I gladly put on the Solana Swing Dress that I have admired for over a month and the only disappointing thing about it was the price.

Because of its simplicity I would need it at a reduced price. I am wearing a medium and I like the oversize look.

20140801-203450.jpg

I especially like it with a denim jacket (same Pilcro Denim Jacket from above).

20140801-204302.jpg

I also tried the jacket on with the gorgeous Petaluma Skirt, because it was on the last chance rack and it happened to be my size (small), but I did not bring a top in to try with it.

This skirt is so pretty. I had kind of yawned at its appearance online (I know! How rude!). I thought it would be just like all of the other feminine tulle skirts out there.

But it is not tulle.

And it is a-mazing in person.

I drooled over it. I do not think it is quite me, but romantic feminine stylists will love it. I can see both Deniz from Dressed Up Deniz and Liz from With Wonder And Whimsy styling this skirt with grace.

A surprising 10 out of 10.

I might have to have it one day.

20140801-204755.jpg

It had to happen.

One moment I am posing in a ladylike skirt.

And the next moment, I get so hot and sweaty I refuse. Refuse. To put on pants.

Never mind.

No one will know.

20140801-204820.jpg

I’ll just take pictures like this.

Tricked you, didn’t I? Not.

Yes, I am so stealthy with these awful closeup shots of this beautiful Prateria Top.

I all ready own a very similar top, ahem, called the Frangipani Top (link goes to my post styling it). It is in my wishlist. I can be patient.

For information’s sake, I am wearing a six and wishlisted an 8. I have large arms and I found the sleeves to be tight in my regular size. It is a beautiful top.

However for just a little more, you can get the dress version.

20140801-205022.jpg

“All right. All right. All right,” said in my best Matthew McConaughey impression.

This dress is a swing dress. It is going to, hmmm, what is the word I am thinking of… Oh, yes, swing away from your body. It is not meant to be figure hugging. It is not that kind of dress. It is supposed to have a balloon shape. And it has to have tight arms and be short to offset the fabric and show a hint of a figure. I also happen to know you can drink half of a bottle of wine, and eat a quarter pound of pasta salad and two slices of pizza and still look exactly the same before and after that little bit of gluttony.

And that is All right.

This is the dress. The one I could not leave without. It is called the Inez Swing Dress. The one that made me break my sale-only rule just days after posting I had a sale-only rule. It is my only purchase of the month at Anthropologie that cost more than $9.95.

You can’t help who what you fall in love with.

20140801-205343.jpg

I knew this dress had to be mine. I was having a low self esteem day. This dress made me feel better.

It also brought back memories.

Memories!

Who can put a price on those?

20140806-134200-49320279.jpg

I am not ruthless enough to turn my back on a dress formed of memories.

I took an eight in it to accommodate my arms. The same arms that hugged this dress all of the way home.

Have you tried on anything lately? Do you ever succumb to temptation simply based on what the item of clothing reminds you of? I guess Sophmore year of high school needed to be reminisced, because it cost me one full priced dress.

I suppose that is better than a letterman’s jacket.

Or the boy twenty two years before who did not appreciate the dress from the past.

Silly Sophmore.

Patches are sexy.

P.S. In June, I posted early summer reviews, in case you missed them.

July 2014 Clothing Purchases

I am currently working on my Comic Con posts so that I can get them up starting tomorrow and also my funny but mortifying story of seeing Patrick Rothfuss again. I was not going to post anything today while I worked on those, but I decided to share the things I purchased in July instead. Because I always enjoy seeing, reading or hearing about other people’s finds.

July was my birthday month so I was able to splurge much, much more than usual. The great news is I did not spend my own money on most of these purchases because almost all of my birthday presents were gift cards to my favorite stores (thank you family and friends!). Plus, I had birthday discounts and 20% off sale purchases going on when I acquired a lot of these items. And I still have funds left over on a gift card to Anthropologie (which I am saving for the River Fade Dress when it goes on sale). I have become an exclusively sale shopper (I have to be with a kid heading to college in three years), so some of the items that I list are probably sold out but you might still find them in a store if you call customer service with the style number. I am still hoping for a price adjustment in the next two weeks on some of these things as long as they get further cut.

20140727-173342.jpg

First, I purchased some accessories that I had in my wishlist for what seemed like forever as I patiently waited for them to go on sale: The Caterpillar Earrings (these are brown and not green in real life), Tassel Bloom Hoops in purple, Anthropologie Monogram Bangle (this did turn my wrist green), and Free People Kantha Clips. Of those four accessories my favorite is the Kantha Clips. I love anything Kantha and these are no exception. I actually own three different pairs.

20140727-174645.jpg

I also picked up the Anthropologie Rainforest Belt now that it is such an amazing sale price. It reminds me of dragon scales. Just call me Khaleesi.

No, seriously.

Oh wait, that’s just what I make my kids do. Don’t worry, it ‘s not all of the time… Just when they want dinner… Or food… Or a ride.

It’s tough being the kids of The Mother of Dragons.

20140727-175142.jpg

My Modcloth Twofer Honey Dress that I styled here with my honeycomb earrings was such a cool addition to my wardrobe. The dress just got cut to 70% off! I think it is now a great price.

20140727-174304.jpg

I am so happy with both the Free People Loretta High Neck Dress and the Free People Late Summer Love Dress (styled here). My husband’s very favorite dress (and outfit post showcasing it which is going up later this week) in the world is now the Loretta High Neck Dress. So I love it all the more now. Plus, now I know what to wear when I need somethin’. Not that the Mother of Dragons ever wants for anything.

20140727-175555.jpg

Anthropologie’s Melanie V-Neck Dress that I got for $20, down from $138 was one of my best scores.

20140727-180208.jpg

Anthropologie’s Talisman Peasant Dress was 75% off after my birthday discount, but I still debated on keeping it. I was unsure about the fit, but when my daughter saw me try it on she could not stop gasping about its awesomeness, so now I am definitely wearing that teenage-conversation-starter everywhere.

20140727-180754.jpg

The Anthropologie Salta Shirtdress (I thought this was awful on until I cut off the extra sleeves) was a great popback price. I love the dress with the alteration I made.

20140727-181406.jpg

And this Anthropologie Laced Chambray Popover was too good of a price at $20 to pass up.

20140727-181708.jpg

I waited for the Anthropologie Sunpass Dress for months, too, (after reviewing it here) and when it hit almost 75% off, I pounced. I am still hoping this gets cut one more time because I am greedy. (Edited on 8/3/2014 to add it did get one more cut! Wheeeee!).

Those dragons need to bring Momma some gold. Isn’t that the good thing about dragons? Don’t they hoard gold? Mine are slackin’.

20140727-182109.jpg

Last but not least is my beloved Free People New Romantics Rio Dress. I originally tried on this dress here, but it was much too expensive for me. Every morning since I reviewed this dress in March, I would wake up and check the website to see if it had gone on sale (I am a patient stalker). Last week I noticed a review I must have missed where the reviewer spoke of buying the dress on sale in the store. Free People’s clothing prices do vary from store to website.

I called a store that the website had listed as having it in stock as soon as it opened (if you know me, you know this terrified me. I never call to order something. I get nervous, slur my words and inevitably get the sweaty shakes, but I did it for this dress. And guess what? They were really nice to me. I think it had nothing to do with my dragons roaring in the background). I bought both colors because both dresses purchased through the store were still 30% less than just one dress would have been retail price. Plus the store I ordered them from did not charge me tax or shipping. Score! Not since my beloved Anthropologie Vanga Kantha Dresses have I been this excited about a dress. I still have not received them, but I am hopeful they will arrive soon.

Whew! Thank goodness for birthdays! It was so fun to stretch my gift cards by being frugal and buying multiple items that were on generous sale markdowns with them instead of just one or two items. I only had one black dress in my closet before this month but I saw this post from the wonderful and incredibly witty fashion blog, Suzanne Carillo Style Files, and it made me want more black little numbers. I knew I wanted to add some to my clothing collection (a much nicer way of saying, gluttonous pile of excess) with my wonderful, generous presents. I am doubtful August will lead to any purchases for myself because the majority of the budget will go to the children’s back-to-school finds, and alas, my birthday gift cards are almost gone.

Do you own one or more black dresses? Do you buy more in your birthday month (gotta love those discounts)? Are you waiting for anything to hit sale? Do you ever stalk something for months (I’m hopeful no one will say me)?

It’s The Little Things: Let’s Talk Make-Up

20140725-123612.jpg

I love make-up, but I do not experiment very often. I like what I like and I rarely change things up. I am still going through my mascara experiment (I received a huge mascara sample kit at Christmas and I am documenting which mascaras work and why. Plus, I have a few more samples and grocery store purchases to review), but so far nothing is beating Benefit They’re Real Mascara. It is odd to keep trying different mascaras and come to realize the one you started with is the best. I do have about eight more mascaras to try from my pack, so there might be a different outcome when my experiment is through.

I only wear make-up about half of the week, especially in the summertime when we stay at home or go to the beach most days. I apply it if I will be out of the house for longer than an hour. I like to give my skin plenty of breaks from products.

I am not an expert on make-up. I am generally in such a hurry to get it on and out the door, I often do not rub my foundation in enough which results in my friends doing it for me when they see me.

20140725-105404.jpg

This can result in an embarrassing picture like this one.

But I still wanted to share what I am currently using. Because make-up is fun and non-permanent. And you always have the opportunity to fix it or change it up the next day. As a non-perfect human, I like the way make-up makes me feel. And the fact that a mistake with it is easily corrected.

20140725-110809.jpg

For foundation, I use Clinique’s Perfectly Real Makeup. The color I use is Shade 02. Everyone’s skin color is gloriously different so I would definitely go to a beauty counter and find the shade that works for you. I have seen them give generous samples to take home of the product if you simply ask so you can try it.

It goes on smooth and I like the light coverage it gives. When I take the time to blend it, it is pretty unnoticeable. I also like that it does not have a scent. Some foundations I have tried in the past have been unbearable due to the perfume-like addition.

20140725-114829.jpg

For powder, I use Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation. The color I use is N10, but as I said with the foundation, your color will most likely be different. It is a great coverage powder and while it removes easily, it does not ever get on my clothes. It also looks even and natural.

20140725-111830.jpg

20140725-112653.jpg

My favorite lipsticks and the only ones I use are Clinique’s Chubby Sticks in Richer Raisin and Roundest Raspberry (which looks like it may be discontinued which is a bummer, but I did find one at Nordstrom here).

20140725-114143.jpg

At night I remove my make-up with Ole Henriksen Cleansing Cloths. I love these wipes. They make my skin feel so good before I go to bed. Sometimes I forget to use them and I will immediately break out. I cannot say enough good things about this product. I used to be cheap and cut a wipe in half but now I use the whole thing. The best price for them seems to be found at Sephora.

20140725-120816.jpg

The only eyeliner I will use is Sephora Collection Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner. I use Matte Brown/Black which is not the color of the picture above. I typically stay away from anything with the word “waterproof” in it, but this is my exception. I do not think this is truly waterproof because it comes off immediately upon using one of my wipes above. It glides on smoothly and with just the right amount of thickness. It is easy to use. I have tried so many eyeliners and this is by far the best one, plus it is a decent price. I first purchased it when I had my make-up done at a make-up counter in Sephora. The make-up artist was actually supposed to be selling only a certain brand but recommended this eyeliner to me even though it was not her product. She also introduced me to those Ole Heriksen Wipes, so I owe her big time.

20140725-112907.jpg

And the eyeshadow I am currently using was from a free kit of Clinique’s. It is Clinique’s Buttered Toast Duo. I really like it. The brown is definitely not as shimmery as shown. In my close-ups from yesterday’s post, I am wearing it (actually, I am wearing all of the cosmetics listed here). It stays on all day and is easy to apply. I do mix the two colors for my brown on my eyes, because by itself the brown was too harsh for me.

20140725-103855.jpg

I use Nars Blush in Orgasm. It glides on easily and it is barely noticeable, which is exactly what you want in a blush. Plus, it seems to last forever. I still have my same blush that I purchased two years ago (which means I probably should change it, but I am going to use it up).

20140725-120940.jpg

In the shower I use Murad Time Release Acne Cleanser to cleanse my face. I still break out even though I am in my late thirties. Washing my face in the shower is a must, although I only do it every three days when I wash my hair (which is probably why I am currently sporting a large pimple between my eyebrows and why I got to see Patrick Rothfuss that way yesterday. Lovely), because I do not want to get my hair wet. Note to self: wash face in shower every time. I also use the moisturizer from that line when I can remember.

I usually wait for some kind of freebie when I buy my make-up. Department stores routinely do a nice promotion for different brands every few months. That is how I received my free eyeshadows. Make-up is expensive so it is nice to be able to pick up extra items with it. And Sephora gives out deluxe samples of things after you earn points which is how I originally tried my Clinique Chubby Stick in Roundest Raspberry and Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara.

It’s the little things: make-up. Even the name itself implies a fairy tale. And this gnome lover sees nothing wrong with that.

What make-up do you like? Do you use any of the ones I have mentioned? Do you sometimes make mistakes in using it? Do you hurry or rush through its application?

*While I love these products, your experience with them may vary. I highly recommend going to a beauty counter and trying them for yourself before purchasing.
