Finally, The Best Mascara

If you remember, and why wouldn’t you, it was a monumental declaration, over a year ago I declared that I would go through a giant box of sample mascaras and do an experiment on which one I thought was the best.

IMG_3437.JPG

And as with all of my best intentions, I managed to document only three of them before I simply resorted to trying them on and then declining most of them forever. Mascara is no joke.

The mascara needs to look natural. It needs to separate the lashes, lift my short spindly genetic shortfalls, from the hovels of my face and mold the shacks of my eyelashes into skyscrapers. I want the structure to last all day but easily tear down at night.

I tried all of the mascaras in Sephora’s 2013 Lash Stash box listed here:

Benefit They’re Real Mascara (which I all ready loved previously)
Blinc Mascara
Buxom Lash Mascara
Clinique High Impact Mascara
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara
Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara
Sephora Outrageous Mascara
Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant
Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Mascara
Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effect Mascara

I also tried MAC’s Zoom Fast Mascara, Clinique’s Lash Doubling Mascara, Maybelline’s Great Lash, Lancome’s Hypnose Doll Lashes, Benefit Bad Gal, and Bobbi Brown’s Everything Mascara through various samples and purchases.

It was quite a task, which is why it took me over a year to complete.

And at the end of it, I had narrowed my choices down to Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara (my old favorite) and Bobbi Brown’s Everything Mascara.

But then something unexpected happened.

IMG_3435.JPG

I tried one of my last mascaras, Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara.

AND I LOVED IT.

It was everything I liked about Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara without the residual clumping that is hard to remove at the end of the day.

I could not wait to order a full size of it.

That is when I ran into a problem. I was not the only one who adored their trial of Make Up Forever Mascara from Sephora (I believe Sephora gave out samples in their birthday gifts last year). And I was not the only one who had decided to jump and order the full size version. However, before I did, I read the reviews. Many of them declared that for whatever the reason, the full size version did not live up to the smaller size.

Thankfully, you can order a travel size version. And that is what I have been doing for the last six months.

IMG_3433.JPG

So, oddly, the travel sized Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara is the winner of my mascara trials. It lengthens lashes dramatically without being too stiff. It removes easily. It stays on all day without any flaking. It separates well. It is the mascara I will and have been exclusively buying for myself. Although, my daughter received the same kit. Her heart still belongs to Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara. So, that is the brand I buy for her.

Have you tried any of these mascaras? What is your favorite mascara? Have you done eyelash extensions? Or that eyelash growth serum? Or do you ever use fake eyelashes? I have tried the fake eyelashes once. But I have not perfected it. Maybe one day I will try again.

*This post is based on my own use of the different mascaras. Your experience may vary from my own. All photos here are unfiltered to truly show the way the product looks when I first apply it and the lighting I apply it in.

Keepin’ It Real: October 2014

I think I say this every month, but… What happened?! How is it the end of the month all ready?! It just does not feel like it should be November yet. October was an easy month for our family. And I very much appreciated that. We now all have our flu shots. No major sicknesses or injuries occurred (except for a minor burn I received from volcanic spaghetti sauce. I have a new scar on my left arm). Who needs tattoos? I’ll just keep splattering molten food on my body (not really. Kids don’t do that at home). Without further ado, some of the highlights and funny moments of the month:

IMG_0656.JPG

I rented a bounce house for my daughter and a few friends for my daughter’s birthday. I thought she was crazy to want a bounce house at the age of fifteen, but it was a huge source of fun for everyone. My husband, my son and myself got in it when it was dark and watched the stars through the net. We took turns laying down while one person jumped and threw the others into the air with the momentum. There is nothing quite like laying in the belly of a giant inflatable beast and watching the crisp autumn sky. You must try it one day, if you haven’t all ready.

Outfit Outtakes.

Our house last night on Halloween:

IMG_0922.JPG

IMG_0923.JPG

It was the first Halloween I have not made goody bags since I moved out on my own. I do not get enough trick or treaters any more to justify making them. But full sized candy bars were had by all last night. And by all, I mean the four trick or treaters we had. I bought ninety candy bars, so that means I have eighty six left, right? My thighs are crying with guilt at the real answer to that.

IMG_0921.JPG

I have been slowly going through this book. Not allowing myself to read too much at a time. It is like a bag of Lindt Truffles. I only want to savor one page. One paragraph. One line in all of its beauty. I am enjoying it so far. Have you read my favorite author, Patrick Rothfuss yet? If not, do not start with this book. Start with my very favorite book, “The Name of the Wind”. It is beautiful. It is fantasy. He is a brilliant writer.

We went to a Benihana-like restaurant for my daughter’s birthday. I forgot how much fun those types of restaurants are. We need to go again sooner than later.

Coming Up In November:

I Hate Pigeons (I originally had this scheduled for October, but the only picture I could get was of a dove. I was worried it would offend someone with the glowing eyes I set in it. What do you think?)
A Small Set Of Anthropologie Fall Reviews
How I Met My Husband
Is Your Mama A Llama?
Meatloaf Muffins
The First Kiss Of Autumn

How was your October? How was your Halloween? I am so sorry I have been behind in comments. I am catching up on all of them today.

If you want a good laugh today, check out this video on The Bloggess’s website. It is my new favorite thing.

It’s The Little Things: The Sweetest Embroidered Hooks

IMG_9825.JPG

Sometime in August, Anthropologie sent me a 20% off code to use in their store for completing a survey they sent me. I spotted these embroidered hooks and I knew they would be perfect towel holders in my Otomi inspired bathroom. I like to mix quirky embroidered pieces with the animal patterned walls.

IMG_9812.JPG

I purchased three out of the four. They arrived and were smaller than I had anticipated. But I loved them so much. Here is a quarter next to them so you can get a good idea of the size.

IMG_9828.JPG

We had to buy the screws for them. They did not come with any.

IMG_9829.JPG

I think they really complete the bathroom. They make me ridiculously happy.

IMG_9823.JPG

They might, perhaps, be my most favorite things I have ever purchased from Anthropologie. And that is saying a lot. They are vintage looking. Outlandish. Fun. And completely go with our house.

I think I would have to fight Phoebe from Friends for them.

I would win.

And Monica would have to clean up the mess.

Then Joey would come up to me and say, “How you doin’?” And I would forget all about my perfect hooks. Which is just what Rachael was hoping for.

Could that be any more accurate?

Ahem.

It’s the little things: finding the perfect small little thing to complete a room. Or just small fuzzy animal faces. They would make anyone happy.

Even Ross.

Have you added anything small to your home lately? Do you have any embroidered pieces? Please share. I would love to hear about it. Don’t worry about Phoebe trying to steal them. I’ve got your back… “I’ll be there for you.”

It’s The Little Things: Let’s Talk Make-Up

20140725-123612.jpg

I love make-up, but I do not experiment very often. I like what I like and I rarely change things up. I am still going through my mascara experiment (I received a huge mascara sample kit at Christmas and I am documenting which mascaras work and why. Plus, I have a few more samples and grocery store purchases to review), but so far nothing is beating Benefit They’re Real Mascara. It is odd to keep trying different mascaras and come to realize the one you started with is the best. I do have about eight more mascaras to try from my pack, so there might be a different outcome when my experiment is through.

I only wear make-up about half of the week, especially in the summertime when we stay at home or go to the beach most days. I apply it if I will be out of the house for longer than an hour. I like to give my skin plenty of breaks from products.

I am not an expert on make-up. I am generally in such a hurry to get it on and out the door, I often do not rub my foundation in enough which results in my friends doing it for me when they see me.

20140725-105404.jpg

This can result in an embarrassing picture like this one.

But I still wanted to share what I am currently using. Because make-up is fun and non-permanent. And you always have the opportunity to fix it or change it up the next day. As a non-perfect human, I like the way make-up makes me feel. And the fact that a mistake with it is easily corrected.

20140725-110809.jpg

For foundation, I use Clinique’s Perfectly Real Makeup. The color I use is Shade 02. Everyone’s skin color is gloriously different so I would definitely go to a beauty counter and find the shade that works for you. I have seen them give generous samples to take home of the product if you simply ask so you can try it.

It goes on smooth and I like the light coverage it gives. When I take the time to blend it, it is pretty unnoticeable. I also like that it does not have a scent. Some foundations I have tried in the past have been unbearable due to the perfume-like addition.

20140725-114829.jpg

For powder, I use Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation. The color I use is N10, but as I said with the foundation, your color will most likely be different. It is a great coverage powder and while it removes easily, it does not ever get on my clothes. It also looks even and natural.

20140725-111830.jpg

20140725-112653.jpg

My favorite lipsticks and the only ones I use are Clinique’s Chubby Sticks in Richer Raisin and Roundest Raspberry (which looks like it may be discontinued which is a bummer, but I did find one at Nordstrom here).

20140725-114143.jpg

At night I remove my make-up with Ole Henriksen Cleansing Cloths. I love these wipes. They make my skin feel so good before I go to bed. Sometimes I forget to use them and I will immediately break out. I cannot say enough good things about this product. I used to be cheap and cut a wipe in half but now I use the whole thing. The best price for them seems to be found at Sephora.

20140725-120816.jpg

The only eyeliner I will use is Sephora Collection Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner. I use Matte Brown/Black which is not the color of the picture above. I typically stay away from anything with the word “waterproof” in it, but this is my exception. I do not think this is truly waterproof because it comes off immediately upon using one of my wipes above. It glides on smoothly and with just the right amount of thickness. It is easy to use. I have tried so many eyeliners and this is by far the best one, plus it is a decent price. I first purchased it when I had my make-up done at a make-up counter in Sephora. The make-up artist was actually supposed to be selling only a certain brand but recommended this eyeliner to me even though it was not her product. She also introduced me to those Ole Heriksen Wipes, so I owe her big time.

20140725-112907.jpg

And the eyeshadow I am currently using was from a free kit of Clinique’s. It is Clinique’s Buttered Toast Duo. I really like it. The brown is definitely not as shimmery as shown. In my close-ups from yesterday’s post, I am wearing it (actually, I am wearing all of the cosmetics listed here). It stays on all day and is easy to apply. I do mix the two colors for my brown on my eyes, because by itself the brown was too harsh for me.

20140725-103855.jpg

I use Nars Blush in Orgasm. It glides on easily and it is barely noticeable, which is exactly what you want in a blush. Plus, it seems to last forever. I still have my same blush that I purchased two years ago (which means I probably should change it, but I am going to use it up).

20140725-120940.jpg

In the shower I use Murad Time Release Acne Cleanser to cleanse my face. I still break out even though I am in my late thirties. Washing my face in the shower is a must, although I only do it every three days when I wash my hair (which is probably why I am currently sporting a large pimple between my eyebrows and why I got to see Patrick Rothfuss that way yesterday. Lovely), because I do not want to get my hair wet. Note to self: wash face in shower every time. I also use the moisturizer from that line when I can remember.

I usually wait for some kind of freebie when I buy my make-up. Department stores routinely do a nice promotion for different brands every few months. That is how I received my free eyeshadows. Make-up is expensive so it is nice to be able to pick up extra items with it. And Sephora gives out deluxe samples of things after you earn points which is how I originally tried my Clinique Chubby Stick in Roundest Raspberry and Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara.

It’s the little things: make-up. Even the name itself implies a fairy tale. And this gnome lover sees nothing wrong with that.

What make-up do you like? Do you use any of the ones I have mentioned? Do you sometimes make mistakes in using it? Do you hurry or rush through its application?

*While I love these products, your experience with them may vary. I highly recommend going to a beauty counter and trying them for yourself before purchasing.
