Cockatiels and Stripes?

IMG_2926.JPG

This outfit pretty much represents what is going on in my brain at any given moment.

IMG_2669.JPG

Colorful cockatiels trying to mate with bright stripes. It is like a smorgesboard of crazy, but I think it works.

But again, I think in cockatiels and stripes, so my thoughts should be taken with a grain of salt.

IMG_2666.JPG

Unless you’re a cockatiel.

I’ve heard salt is bad for birds.

IMG_2663.JPG

Not as bad as rocks. Or airplanes. Or cats. Or stripes.

But close.

IMG_2662.JPG

Can we please be sober serious for a moment?

IMG_2670.JPG

I purchased this red and white striped skirt from eShatki years ago before I had a blog. It remains one of my favorite pieces in my closet and I previously wore it here.

IMG_2665.JPG

The cockatiel top was another older purchase. It is by Daniel Rainn (I cannot find it or a similar enough top to link to, but I have seen this top on eBay). I bought it for $13 at Nordstrom Rack many years ago. I had never worn it before. It is a tricky top. It has a sheen and it is a peplum shape (hidden by the skirt).

IMG_2927.JPG

I scored the Anthropologie Waterfront Wedges on a popback for 85% off recently (sold out, similar here). I have wanted to wear them with everything.

What do your thoughts look like? Are they bird and stripe shaped? Peanut and alligators? Polka dots and rabid wolves? I think I may have a problem. My thoughts don’t go together. But at least I can pretend that my outfit patterns do.

It’s The Little Things: Tights

IMG_1996-3.JPG

One of my favorite aspects of the wintertime are the tights. Dresses that might normally be too short can be transformed with the addition of another layer. I love to play with different colors, but sometimes the very best tights are simply black and grey.

Cable knit tights are fabulous, however, I am often guilty of rushing when I put them on. The pattern will creep up my legs in a different angle than its twin and can feel discombobulated and look sloppy.

IMG_1461.JPG

My go-to tights this year have been Nordstrom Rack’s Free Press Plush Tights. They are thick. They are cozy. They have a fuzzy lining that feels like tight sweatpants but in the very best possible way. They come in a tights version and leggings. My daughter prefers the leggings, while I prefer the tights.

More information on the above outfit can be found in this post.

I even walked down to my mailbox the other night in these tights. I knew I was getting a package. A sequel to this book and I was so very excited that I ran out of the house minus shoes. The tights kept my feet warm and did not snag at all on the pavement. I would not recommend testing your tights in this manner, but it is nice to know they can stand up to a delivery excitement.

IMG_1997.JPG

The tights claim to be handwash only. I am not a rule follower. And I have to be able to machine wash tights and leggings, otherwise I would never wash them. I have estimated that I have machine washed and dried each of my pairs approximately six times. My daughter and I each have four pairs of these, so it is impossible to tell which ones are which when washing, but they have all held up well. I do not expect them to last forever, but for their low cost, I have been impressed with their wear.

More information on this outfit can be found in this post.

The tights are around $8. I took a M/L. They do have some minuses. I wish they were labeled somehow on the inside, because with four XS/S in the house and four M/L sizes, I have to guess as to whose tights are whose when I finally get around to folding clothes, which I should be doing this exact moment, but instead I am writing this post.

More information on the above outfit can be found this post.

Do you have a go-to pair of tights? Do you have a secret to putting on cable knit tights so the pattern isn’t a weird mark on your legs? Do you ever run to the mailbox barefoot or in stockings in great anticipation of the package that could be inside?

IMG_1998.JPG

It’s the little things: leg coverings that are both durable, comfortable and affordable. It doesn’t get much better than that.

*I am wearing the Free Press Plush Tights in the above pictures. I have stated my experience with the tights, but please wash and handle at your own risk. I was not compensated for writing this post. I simply adore these tights and wanted to share about a product I have enjoyed these last few months. However, some of the links in this post are affiliate links, clicking on or purchasing from certain links on this page will result in a small commission for warmer legs this blog.

A Dress Falled With Embroidery

IMG_9558.JPG

My husband and I went on a lunch date on this day. It was not cool enough for the sweater, so I wish I had set it down.

IMG_9556.JPG

I also wish I had more pictures of the dress itself, but my photographer that day was all about the closeups.

I hate closeups.

I love my photographer.

You will just have to bear with me.

IMG_9570.JPG

Or bare with me. Look at the cute Free People bandeau bra (bralette post can be found here) I simply put over a regular bra for a pretty lace peek-a-boo moment.

IMG_9566.JPG

I found this dress at my local Nordstrom Rack for a screaming deal. I could not believe nobody had scooped it up (it is sold out. I could only find one size medium of a similar dress. It is on sale for $30 from $148 on Free People here).

IMG_9565.JPG

The embroidered detail is amazing.

IMG_9557.JPG

I wanted to pair the dress with some wood accessories. I slipped on this Scrabble Ring for a fun solution. If I was a pumpkin latte kind of gal, I would happily drink it in this dress. This dress screams, “fall!”, with its orange and mustard accents.

Alas, I am allergic to pumpkin. So, I will have to get by just wearing the color.

IMG_9562.JPG

I will somehow manage to get through the autumn with regular ol’ coffee.

And closeups of my thirty seven year old face.

Somehow.

The secret is in the sauce a little thing I am grateful to not be allergic to, wine.

IMG_9560.JPG

Did you notice something amiss in the previous closeup picture? Something that did not look right?

Was it a bit creepy?

Was it my elbow?

I am double jointed in my elbows, so sometimes in pictures like those it looks as though my head should be flipped the other way.

Just give it time.

Halloween is coming up.

With pumpkins. And closeups. And weird elbows.

And wine.

It’s enough to make a girl’s head spin. What is making your head spin lately? I am definitely craning my head towards this dress. Are you double jointed? I only have it in my elbows and my thumbs…

And my mind.

CLOSED: 18th Blog Giveaway: $25 Gift Card to Nordstrom Rack

IMG_9536.JPG

This giveaway is now closed. Future entries will not be counted. Thank you to all who entered! I will contact the winner on 9/17/2014.

I cannot believe it has been eighteen months. And yet, I can. I was going through a blog burnout last week. I found it incredibly difficult to write posts and take pictures. It happens. I did not realize how hard it would hit me to have two kids not in elementary school. It has led to some pretty depressing days, in which it is all I can do to get through the day. Let alone make a funny blog post. I did not remember to mourn the holding of the hands in public, the walking to the school gate, the different types of snacks I can no longer put in lunches. It was a bigger transition than I had initially thought. Harder. And my soul and creativity felt drained.

But enough about that.

Thank you all for seeing me through this last week. Hopefully this sadness will pass. I, myself, am on a clothing shopping ban for September, because of the bounty I purchased in August. But that does not mean you have to be! This month, I decided to giveaway a gift card to one of my favorite stores, Nordstrom Rack.

Nordstrom Rack is the place I go to for most of my Free People items. They always tend to have the clothes I want for cheaper than those online discount shopping sites. And I love them for that. In fact, just Saturday I posted about my new sandals I recently purchased there. This Saturday, my post will cover the bralettes I have found discounted there. My friend got a pair of boots there a few months ago for $1. I am jealous of that one.

IMG_9537.JPG

To enter for a chance to win the $25 gift card to Nordstrom Rack (also good at regular Nordstrom stores), please leave a comment on this post stating what you are most looking forward to wearing in the fall. I am most looking forward to wearing my Free People’s Miles of Henley Dresses that I feel have not gotten the adequate attention they deserve in seasons passed.

You may earn a second entry simply by being a subscribed reader of this blog (there are many ways to do so on the right hand side of this post) and leaving a comment stating you are a subscribed reader.

Limit two entries per person in the forms specified.

The giveaway runs from September 10, 2014 12:00 a.m. PST to September 16, 2014 9:00 p.m. PST. I will be choosing one winner from the comments entered on this post for the $25 gift card to Nordstrom Rack using random.org. I will contact the winner on September 17, 2014 and display the winner’s name on this blog on September 18, 2014.

Thank you everyone who enters this giveaway! And for stopping by! And for commenting this last month. I really appreciate it!

By commenting on this post, you are entering this giveaway for a chance to win one $25 gift card to Nordstrom Rack and agreeing to the rules outlined in this giveaway.

I will attempt to contact the winner three times with the email address provided. If I have not heard from the winner within fourteen days from the first attempt at contact, the prize will be forfeit and a new winner will be drawn.

Past winners are welcome to enter.
