Mama’s Fish House

20140617-135815.jpg

Whilst in Maui, we decided one day to take a drive to eat lunch at Maui’s most famous of restaurants, Mama’s Fish House. I had avoided it the previous year, because I thought that it was located many hours from our hotel. But in reality, or to put it more bluntly, if I was smart enough to actually know how to look at and read a map, I would know it was a mere thirty five minutes away. That run-on sentence took longer to write than it took to drive there.

In truth, I also wanted to go there because a reviewer of the restaurant, in an attempt to write something negative, declared it was like Disneyland. How soon after reading those words did I decide to go there? Faster than it took to write this word: immediately.

I wore my Anthropologie Songbird Skirt and an older black tee. The shoes are Anthropologie’s Almanac Sandals.

I hope it goes without saying that I would not be writing this post if the food had not been phenomenal. Because it was. It was honestly the best meal I have ever had. We eat one big meal out a day while on vacation and the rest of the meals we either make in our hotel room or catch a quick cheap bite somewhere.

This particular lunch was expensive, but food in Maui is expensive. For example, I grabbed three bags of Hostess Donettes at the grocery store and they were almost $17. They would have been $6 at home. How soon after reading that purchase are you discrediting that I know good food? Somewhere between the word “immediately” and a long run-on sentence, I bet. But trust me.

We had eaten one of the worst meals I have ever had at a different fish house in Maui and the prices were very similar. That made us appreciate Mama’s all the more.

Their poppy bread was delicious.

20140617-140756.jpg

They brought out a small noodle appetizer compliments of the chef. I will be spending my whole summer trying to replicate it. It was one of the best things I have ever had. Here is what I know it had: cilantro, noodles, carrots, cabbage, lime, and if I were to guess, I would say mirin, fish sauce and sesame oil. I cannot wait to experiment with this. We all scraped our plates (’cause we’re fancy) clean. And look at the cute little fork they served with it. And being the awesome and super sophisticated mother that I am, I let my son eat his entree with that little fork, too.

20140617-140627.jpg

Blame that decision on the best drink I have ever had. In my life. It is called “The Relaxer.” I drank two of these and this is another thing I will be recreating at home.

20140617-135918.jpg

The menu changes daily as the fish is caught and it features the fisherman/woman’s name who caught the fish. How cool is that?

20140617-141104.jpg

We all tried a different fish dish. My family loves fish. We ate fish every day while we were in Maui. Everyone’s favorite fish was the dish I chose. It was a trio of three white fish. And it had Thai curry sauce (the chefs are from Thailand).

20140617-140946.jpg

The restaurant is also known for their Lilikoi Creme Brûlée. It was on the show, “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” This was the one thing I did not care for. I like passion fruit and I like creme brûlée. But together? Not so much. It was definitely not bad. Just not my favorite.

I am the only one of us that felt this way. The rest of my family liked it.

20140617-140653.jpg

We noticed as we were leaving that my son’s napkin remained untouched throughout the meal.

“You didn’t use your napkin?” I asked slightly horrified. I say slightly, because by this time, I had all ready let him eat lunch with a tiny fork and had indulged in two Relaxers. Manners were a moot point at this stage.

“I didn’t want to ruin it. It looks so pretty,” was his reply.

I wish he felt the same way about his pants. But he is right. The napkin was pretty. I suppose it was a fair sacrifice.

20140617-140721.jpg

We went outside for more pictures. The little restaurant is on a small quaint white sand beach.

20140617-141423.jpg

I loved the curve of the palm trees.

20140617-140826.jpg

Have you ever eaten somewhere that you would take a trip again, just to return to it?

We have decided we must return to Maui if only to eat here again. It was amazing. And the service was fantastic, too. This was definitely a highlight of our trip. How long do you think it would take to travel there from my house? The map is saying something crazy, like seven hours (and that involves air travel). I am choosing to be believe that is simply incorrect.

Now, if you will excuse me, I’m off to go eat a Donette (not to be confused with a “donut”. I did not earn my fancy palate for nothin’).

Lavender Farm

If my husband’s favorite part of our Maui trip was The Crater, then mine would have to be Maui’s Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm. At only $3 a person and free parking, it is a bargain to get in and wander the beautiful property. They give you a map and a treasure hunt piece of paper that you stamp as you walk through the grounds (I recommend adults do this as the prize is age universal). My son LOVED this.

This picture was taken on the drive up. The drive is just beautiful.

20140614-120319.jpg

There are many different paths. I like the name of this one.

20140614-115935.jpg

And, of course, lavender farms means pictures of lavender.

20140614-120616.jpg

We wandered through trees.

20140615-145811.jpg

And up high. The views on the farm are incredible.

20140614-120200.jpg

I even had a Buddha friend to keep me company.

20140614-120354.jpg

Beautiful flowers.

20140614-120131.jpg

And creepy girl flowers.

20140614-120240.jpg

My husband and I split a lavender scone. I wanted a picture, but he ate half of it before I could get the full thing.

It was really good.

20140614-120442.jpg

Now. My favorite part. I love chameleons. And we were lucky enough to spot three Jackson Chameleons while we were there.

20140614-120100.jpg

My husband said he’s never seen me so happy.

20140614-120513.jpg

But, how cute is this little guy?! Those horns! He is a baby. And I was madly in love. I could have spent the whole vacation up there playing with those lizards.

What are your thoughts on chameleons? Have you been to a lavender farm or eaten anything with lavender in it?

Outfit details: this dress is an older Anthropologie dress called Espejoa Mini-Dress. I am wearing the dress backwards. I would rather a keyhole be in the back. The closest dress I can find to it now is this dress. The shoes are Gentle Soul’s tall gladiator sandals and the necklace is Simply Livly’s Turquoise Necklace.

On Top Of The World

20140613-191558.jpg

We just got back from Maui, late Thursday night. I will be doing a little trip report next week (I still have yet to write it. I have to get my kids ready to leave today. They are embarking upon a week long camping trip with their grandparents. I am hoping this alone time will allow my brain the capability to fill pages with stories and get me caught up on comments and reading my favorite blogs!). I managed to do some outfit photos while I was there.

20140613-191026.jpg

My favorite thing to do on vacation is to just drive and see where the day takes us. This usually does not disappoint. We found ourselves in the vicinity of Maui’s Haleakala Crater and so we decided to make the drive up the mountain. Usually people make the trek up for sunrise or sunset, but we are not planners. I think both events would be worth it. Although, I cannot imagine making the drive in the dark, especially with the bicyclists on those tight turns.

This picture above was taken on the drive up. It starts off gorgeous and green and then turns red and barren as you drive higher up the volcanic rock.

20140613-192005.jpg

We got to the top and it was gorgeous. Truly breathtaking. You can see above the clouds. It feels wonderful and oddly like being a part of “The Never Ending Story.”

20140613-191931.jpg

Yes, I wore this dress to the top of a volcano where everyone else was dressed in hiking gear.

20140613-192035.jpg

And it was kind of awesome! Well, maybe I did regret not bringing a sweater. It was cold! But spontaneity sometimes calls for a little discomfort.

The dress was a clearance buy from Free People that I featured here a few months ago. It is sold out now, but they have a slightly similar one here that I very much want. And underneath it, I am wearing my favorite slip in the world. It is the Free People Trapeze Slip. It looks like they currently have a similar color to my seafoam colored slip. I wear mine at least once a week. While I was in Maui, I saw three different women wearing this slip (all three women had on different colors and all three women were at three different places) as a swimsuit cover-up.

The necklace is Simply Livly’s Turquoise Necklace.

20140613-191313.jpg

It was so high. It might have been the highest I have ever been except for traveling in an airplane.

20140613-193302.jpg

One of the most amazing sights is peering down into the crater. It feels so untouched and I told my husband that I could still believe there might be dinosaurs amongst us peering down into that valley. This was my husband’s favorite part of the trip. He could have stayed here all day.

20140613-192635.jpg

And honestly, I could have, too.

20140613-193758.jpg

It was peaceful and not as cold as it was at the very top of the mountain.

20140613-193921.jpg

I did a little twirl and I think it looks like I was flying.

20140613-193952.jpg

Speaking of flying, we spotted a ton of owls on Maui. For some reason it is not something that I had pictured when I thought of the island. This little guy was the third one I spotted on the drive back down the crater.

20140613-192720.jpg

Have you been to the top of a volcano? Was it windy and cold? Did you bring a gnome friend?

Catch Me!

20130406-143910.jpg

I am terrified of heights. I can’t even stand on a step ladder without my legs shaking. In dreams of falling, I always crash to the ground and die. I’m a freak like that. But my husband’s one request on our trip to Maui was that we zipline as a family. So, I booked the excursion and secretly resented my husband for a month. I began plotting ways to get out of it. But the days continued to pass and each hint from me that our family did not need to do a dangerous excursion was met with silence. Which, as we all know, is the final answer in any marital argument.

So, I decided that I would rather hate him for making me zipline, than have him hate me for not doing it. Yes, I am perfectly mentally healthy.

The night before the plunge of doom, I was up sobbing in our hotel room. Why was this happening? Why would he want to do this? How could he subject our family to this?

I am a joy.

My husband wanted to do this excursion, because he felt that our son needed this boost for his self esteem. My son had been dreading a wonderful field trip our school does for its fifth graders. They have to zipline during a three day camp. We really wanted him to go with his peers. He thought if our son saw that he could accomplish this, he might be more inclined to try other new things. Once again, he was right.

The next morning, we arrived at the zipline excursion. It is hosted by Maui Tropical Plantation and is called Maui Zipline Company. The grounds are beautiful and lush. But between every branch is a spider. And there are fun creepy crawlies everywhere. My kids, who had been apprehensive about ziplining (definitely having nothing to do with a hysterical woman tormenting them the night before), decided they would much rather be on the zipline tower than on the ground with the spiders and bugs.

20130406-144034.jpg

20130409-084543.jpg

So, now I was all alone in the war against the zipline. At this point, I could not let my babies go up alone. Plus, I am cheap and there are no refunds once you get there.

The guides introduced themselves. I knew I had to go through with this. One of the guides looked like Brad Pitt, but younger and sweeter. We are going to call him L.B. (I need to protect his innocence). My husband later asked me if I would have gone through with it for less attractive guides. I, unfortunately, had to answer “no.” Heck, if you think you are going to plummet to your death, you might as well have something pretty to look at on the way down.

They strapped us into our gear. L.B. explained that although there is a braking system, they will be the ones ultimately catching us. Sigh. He stated he would like to have kids one day, perhaps in ten years, so please be careful with your legs when he comes in to catch you. This brought many images into my mind. I will share with you the PG image. It was the vision of what my ovaries will look like in ten years. Shivers. It was not pretty. Our poor babies never had a chance.

We climbed our first ziplining tower. It was fifty feet high, which I guess is pretty mild in the ziplining world. To me, it felt like Mount Everest. Tears rolled down my cheeks. My legs started trembling. It was quite embarrassing. Then the wind kicked up and the tower began swaying. Okay, maybe not swaying, but it definitely moved. It was terrifying.

They decided my son and I would go on parallel lines as the third and fourth people to go. Let me backtrack and state that there was another family on this excursion with us. They were a family of five. They were very quiet. I am quite positive, yours truly, was not their cup of tea.

20130406-143655.jpg

My son started to back out. And I realized this mommy better buck up and do this if my children were going to have this experience. So, I bent down when they told me to and let it happen. It was actually quite easy. I looked behind me to see if my son had proceeded after me. He had! We both landed safely at the next tower. We had made it! Only FOUR more to go!

20130406-143802.jpg

Each tower, after that, was easier. On the final zipline, you are only twenty feet off the ground. And you know what? I let go. I let go of the handles, for perhaps just one second. Nothing bad happened. It was actually fun. It was exhilarating! I was soaring! And then the most amazing thing happened, L.B. caught me. I was back on the ground. My legs ached. My back ached. My heart ached (good bye L.B.!). But my soul was full.

20130406-144615.jpg

Have you been ziplining? What did you think of the experience?
