What I Wore in Maui Part I

I have a confession. I am not good with shoes. Not only am I not good with them. I do not have a passion for them (well, except for vintage cowboy boots, and then it is all over). I know this is not a good thing to admit to people who are looking at what I wore. But I thought you should know.

I have tried very hard to feel the love, but it is just not there. In reality, this is a good thing. I do not need another vice.

I have a pair of sandals that I bought 8 years ago. They aren’t pretty. But they are so comfortable and practical. They will make an appearance in the following pictures. I wear them all summer. It is embarrassing, but I do not even care. Recently, I branched out and purchased these flip flops from Target. They are really comfortable and I like the black and white stripes:

This dress is my husband’s favorite. I think it is a wench thing. I have had it for years. It is from Anthropologie. I think it was called Maeve coral red peasant dress. It is very easy to wash and it has not faded in all of the years I have owned it. I wore this while we hung out at the resort. I did not have to walk the plank!

I wore this dress when we went to Cafe O’lei for dinner. Miracle of miracles, I did not spill any margarita on my silk dress. Cheers! Notice my fancy sandals! I bought this dress last year during a sale at Anthropologie. It is called Arched Careena Silk dress. It was the only one left in the store and it fit perfectly! I love when that happens!

I had to take two pictures in this dress, because I adore it so. I recently purchased this dress from Free People (please excuse my overabundance of blush in the vacation pic. It must have been the wine). I LOVE it! It is so comfy. It is called the Daisy Lace Dress. The back is longer than the front, so you do not need to worry about bending over. It comes in cream, black and lavender. I purchased the lavender in a medium and could not be happier with the color and fit. I highly recommend this dress.

Which dress is your favorite? Are you a wench lover? Do you forgive my shoe sins?

Our Trip to Maui Part II

20130403-120627.jpg

I had booked us three excursions while we were in Maui. They were: ziplining (which gets a report all of its own), snorkeling and a luau.

SNORKELING:

20130403-120740.jpg

The snorkeling excursion I picked for us was on the Four Winds II. It went to Molokini. The captain of this boat is one of the most enjoyable human beings I have ever come across. He was absolutely hilarious. He made me almost cry from laughing so hard. I do not want to give away all of his jokes. Here are some gems, but you have to imagine them being spoken in the perfect rugged sea captain grumble:

20130403-121012.jpg

“Ahhhh, look over there at those humpback whales. You know, I know everything there is to know about the humpback whale… No, really it’s true. I couldn’t figure out why I knew so much. I went to a hypnotist and she put me under. Turns out I was a humpback whale in a previous life…”

“Look at that beauty slapping her tale. Mmmm…it drives me crazy.”

Oh, you had to be there. His delivery was exceptional. He let my son “drive” the boat. My son loved him. I loved him. The trip was worth it just to hear the comedy. The snorkeling was nice. The crew was sweet. We took some amazing pictures of whales. They have a photographer onboard who is phenomenal. Definitely worth purchasing his photos. I highly recommend this company.

LUAU:

20130403-121120.jpg

I booked the luau closest to our hotel. It was at The Grand Wailea. The Grand Wailea is huge. I had checked out rooms here, but they were too small for the price. Pool cabanas here run around $400 a day! Can you imagine? It was way too crowded for my version of a relaxing vacation, but the pools looked amazing.

The luau itself was very well done. Our family really enjoyed it. They even have a man who spins fire! The most impressive thing was the food. I had not planned on enjoying a mass produced meal, but it was delicious.

Drinks come with the meal. They are not good and are very watered down. Be a genius like the other family at our table, and drink the free bottled wine.

The couple sitting next to us had been married 29 years. They were an older couple with twin eight year old boys. The most wonderful aspect about them was they were still madly in love. I loved the smiles they would give each other. I asked the husband what their secret was and this was his answer:

“Respect. We really respect each other. We know what each of us is good at. Every person brings something to the table. You have to let your partner shine.”

Lovely advice from a very nice man. It was a delightful evening.

Restaurants:

My husband found us a fantastic breakfast place called Kihei Caffe. We ate here twice. It was very inexpensive and had big plates of fantastic food.

Our super sweet bellhop had recommended some restaurants to us when he delivered our groceries to our room. One of them was Pita Paradise. This was our favorite spot on the trip. It is a greek restaurant. The owner catches fresh fish everyday. I am adventurous, so I had the chicken kabobs both times we ate here. The bread is delicious and the tzatziki sauce is heavenly. My husband also tried the greek burger. He said it was wonderful. My kids had the chicken parmigiana.

The other restaurant he recommended was Cafe O’lei . It is a steakhouse. It was also inexpensive for the area. The shortribs I ordered were good. The mango margarita was one of the best I have had.

20130403-121612.jpg

We stumbled upon this little hut selling hawaiian icees. It is called S & Q’s. Oh my goodness! Have you ever had an icee over vanilla ice cream? Amazing! Worth the trip alone. I loved Maui!

20130403-121702.jpg

I gained four pounds on this trip! Shocking right? But that is what vacation is for. Indulgence. Now it is back to reality and self restraint. Why does it have to be over?

My favorite part of our trip was the whale watching and piƱa coladas. My children’s best memory was zip-lining. My husband, the most thoughtful, said his favorite part was watching our son try new things and gain some much needed self confidence. So, there you have it. Maui: the place to go to test your boundaries, watch mammals in the water and drink fruity cocktails while doing so.

What has been your very favorite vacation spot? Oh, and do you know of any place that sells true Hawaiian icees over ice cream in Southern California? I NEED one! (said in my best sea captain grumble)

Our Trip to Maui Part I

20130402-125535.jpg

We just returned from a seven night trip to Maui.

I am breaking down our vacation into a two part mini trip report. The first part is all about the hotel. The second part will be snorkeling, luau, and restaurants we loved in the area.

On the airplane ride to our destination, I was sitting next to my son and overheard the following, obviously incorrect, information given to him by my thirteen year old daughter:

“Do you see that airplane over there? That is the airplane that holds all of the luggage.”

“Do you know how fast an airplanes goes in the sky? 88 miles per hour.”

“Do you see that Fedex airplane? That is just ‘brought to you by Fedex.’ It doesn’t hold anything.”

After hogging the window seat, my daughter said to my son, “oh, the view is so beautiful. The clouds are beautiful.”

My son replied, “the wing is beautiful.” Because that is all he could see.

“No, really,” when I laughed at his sweetness, “the sun is glinting off of it. It is so pretty.”

Awwwww.

20130402-124538.jpg

We stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea. No, we are not “fancy.” I got a fantastic price through Costco (I like to buy my vacations where I buy my toilet paper in bulk) and ultimately decided on this resort, because it is all suites. If you have older children, you understand the importance of this arrangement!

At check-in, they gave the children wooden whale tale necklaces, in addition to beautiful flower leis for the girls and wooden bead leis for the boys. This was a sweet surprise.

20130402-125721.jpg

The hotel was exquisite. The employees were very gracious and friendly. It was definitely a classy hotel, but not snooty. Each room has a giant lanai with a table for four and a lounge chair. There is a small refrigerator, microwave and keurig machine (they give you the coffee) in the room. We opted to splurge for a deluxe ocean view room. It was well worth it!

20130402-125839.jpg

Our first stop was Foodland where we stocked up on cereal, milk, snacks and wine. We ate most breakfasts in our room. The kids had cereal and milk. I had wine. I found this to be very economical.

20130402-130749.jpg

Here are some things I learned about The Fairmont Kea Lani while staying here:

1.) For $45, you can reserve an umbrella and two lounge chairs for the day, for a front row spot on the beach. This can and should be booked before you arrive. We opted to get down to the beach when they opened and get the generous free umbrella and lounge chairs they offer with the room. We got a second row spot on the beach and just tipped for setup.

20130402-130914.jpg

2.) If you want a pool cabana for the day, reserve one well in advance. Pool space is packed. People get down and reserve their spots well before I am even thinking about opening my eyes. Lounge chairs do not open up again until around 2:30 everyday. I tried to reserve a cabana further in our stay and was unable to get one.

3.) Sign up to be a Fairmont President Club member (this is free) before you arrive, you get free internet everyday. You also save 15% on pool cabanas.

4.) My favorite restaurant was the little cafe on the premises. The pizza was fantastic and such a good way to feed a family in expensive Wailea. Their tuna sandwiches were amazing. I bought seven cookies for our house on the last day we were there, because they were the most wonderful chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. (I ate one for lunch today. Shhh!)

20130402-130320.jpg

20130402-130426.jpg

5.) They have great prices on drinks at the pool after 3:00.

20130402-134355.jpg

6.) Housekeeping has until 4:00 to clean your room. This did not work for us. They changed it to a time that did.

7.) My very least favorite thing about this resort was the air conditioning. There is a motion sensor on the air conditioning and for the first four nights, I was up waving my hands in front of the air conditioner, praying for air. I felt very much like I was in TOTAL RECALL. I was wondering which mutation I would get (I knew which one I hoped for. ; ) ).

Finally, I could not take it any more. I called down and they immediately fixed it. Why hadn’t I done that earlier? Who knows? Maybe it was wine for breakfast. But for others who like a cold room, you can request this before you arrive and never have to deal with the issue.

8.) I had debated posting this, but if you stay here, I thought you should know:

One day the umbrella attendants placed our umbrella at the end of the beach near the rental beach equipment. My son was boogie boarding in the shallowest of water and a woman came crashing down on top of him on her paddleboard. She had refused to listen to the instructor and get down when he told her to. The paddleboard clonked my son on the side of the head. They are very hard and have sharp fins. The instructor was scared. I was scared. The lady disappeared. I am not going to repeat the conversation I overheard between him and a colleague, but everyone was very relieved to have a good outcome.

The rest of the day was spoiled, having to continuously check his pupils. He had to sleep with us that night. I asked if he was dizzy until he was dizzy with annoyance.

If you have young children who play in the water: Do not accept an umbrella close to this rental facility. We were very lucky that day, but it just takes one person not listening to the instructor to turn a day at the beach in to what could be tragic.

20130402-134547.jpg

All right! Enough unpleasantries! Did we just come back from vacation or what? Honestly, our stay was still a ten in my memories.

How could anyone have a bad time when their son runs up to them saying, “Mom! Mom! I’m just like Sam! I climbed the rocks in my bare feet!”. Here is a picture of my son’s hobbit toes:

20130402-133749.jpg

Besides a couple of bumps (Budget rental car in Maui was awful), our holiday was truly magical. Maui is gorgeous. The humpback whales could be seen from our room and from our spots on the beach. It felt like we had just gotten there, and then we had to leave. I highly recommend this resort. It felt like home. We cannot wait to go back!
