A Watched Pot Never Boils

Or does it?

Either way, that is not what this story is about.

20140512-170046.jpg

When I was twenty two, I gave birth to my daughter. And at twenty six, my son. I immediately slid into a very deep postpartum depression after each birth. I did not recognize it at the time.

I wore the same clothes for six months.

The same knot in the back of my hair that was the size of a bird’s nest.

And for one of the births, the same shirt (honestly, my brain is so riddled with memory holes, you would think that that knot of a bird’s nest in my hair was filled with woodpeckers who drilled into my brain and stole my thoughts), I cannot remember which child this happened with, but I believe it was my daughter.

20140512-165923.jpg

This shirt.

It says, “A Watched Pot Never Boils.”

I bought it for my husband as a gift (ain’t he the luckiest?). I believe it was from The Gap (which is what made the shirt gift worthy at the time). I know it was $3 (see lucky comment).

20140512-170240.jpg

It was soft. It had fuzzy letters. I did not give a cadoodle about either of those things. All I cared about was that it was easy. I would like to describe the pants I was wearing with the shirt, but to be quite honest, I probably wasn’t wearing any pants the majority of the time. See “lucky husband” comment above.

I am sure hoping I put on pajama bottoms if the occasion called for it.. Or if it was an elaborate affair, some black stretch pants.

But I cannot fathom what occasion or affair that would be.

20140512-170402.jpg

One day my husband came home from work. I, of course, was wearing the shirt.

He could not take it anymore.

And he said the meanest thing he has ever said in our entire marriage.

I will never forget it.

It came out of the blue. I think it had been boiling inside of him for months.

“That shirt is awful! It is the most unflattering thing ever created. You do not look good in it.”

I was crushed.

I sobbed.

I tore at the knot in my hair.

I snapped. The snap. Out. Of. It.

As much as those words hurt, he was right. And the truth is, I would have kept wearing that shirt for who knows how long. Maybe to this day. I was stuck. In a rut. And I could not see anything past the day to day.

I began to care about what I wore a little more. Oh, not right away. I believe after that comment from my husband, I changed into another one of his clearance-bargains-of-a-phrase shirts. I did not have enough self confidence to wear my own clothes yet. I felt frumpy and I looked the part. It is sad and funny to me that I thought putting on a different t-shirt of his was what he meant for me to do.

My husband wanted his wife back.

And slowly, it happened.

I remember being awake with our baby at 3:30 in the morning and sneaking out to the living room. In the dark. There I sat on the floor and watched t.v., while I brushed the knot out of my hair for an hour and a half and sobbed. If “a watched pot never boils” than an unwatched soul can drain away.

I caught mine just in time.

20140512-170439.jpg

You would think that I would have burned the shirt.

Thrown the shirt away.

But I did neither of those things.

20140512-170132.jpg

You see, it never was about the shirt.

It hardly ever is.

I still take the shirt out of the drawer about twice a year.

And I wear it.

I’d like to be funny and say it is mostly to mess with my husband. And, oh, my dears, there is much truth to that. The look on his face is priceless each and every time this shirt is worn. It goes from mirth to ashamed to alarm back to mirth and than to love. And that is always a good time.

Sometimes, the shirt is worn because it is comfortable. I see it folded in the drawer. I know how soft it is. It is like being wrapped in an easy hug.

But sometimes.

Sometimes I put that shirt on as a dare to myself. A test, if you will. It is a challenge to see if I can be trusted to wear the shirt for only one night. I need to know that I will.

Because a part of me. A part of me still lives in the depths of the drain. I need to know that the rest of me will not join her.

I need to be able to put the shirt on.

And I need even more to be able take the shirt off.

Because an unwatched soul will drain away.

I need to know I am watching.

Summertime Pasta

20140511-214617.jpg

This really should be called, “Cherry Tomato Broccoli Pesto Pasta.” But that’s a mouthful! This pasta reminds me of everything I love about summer. It is fresh. It is quick. It is easy. There is not any meat in the dish, but you do not miss it. My family loves this.

I recently indulged in a similar pasta dish at a local Italian restaurant. I wanted to try to recreate it at home. I searched for a recipe, but the closest I could find was this yummy one. The following recipe is loosely adapted from that one.

20140511-210309.jpg

Ingredients:

1/4-1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes
1/4 cup white wine (I always use Riesling and it is fine. Any white non-bubbly wine will do)
1 clove of crushed garlic (or a handy dandy frozen cube)
6 oz. refrigerated pesto (pick your favorite. A bad pesto will ruin this dish)
1 12 oz. package fresh linguine (if you cannot find this a regular package of dried linguine is fine)
2 pint size containers of cherry tomatoes
3/4 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. Olive oil
1 head of brocolli chopped (or one small steamable all ready chopped package)
5 small slices fresh mozarella (cut again into thirds)

20140511-200058.jpg

First things first. Chop your broccoli heads up into large bite sized pieces and place into a large sealable gallon sized plastic bag. Or you could simply buy a small package of steam-able brocolli. I normally do that, but this time, my store was out. Seal the chopped broccoli crowns, place them in the bag and set aside.

Boil water in a large pot.

Chop three-quarters of your cherry tomatoes into half. Also cut mozzarella slices into bite sized pieces and set mozzarella pieces aside.

20140511-195011.jpg

In a large skillet, heat up the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add garlic and cook one minute. Add halved cherry tomatoes and remaining whole tomatoes into the skillet. Add salt and red pepper flakes. Let simmer twelve minutes. Stir occassionally.

20140511-220645.jpg

In the meantime, boil noodles according to the directions on the package. I prefer to use fresh pasta found in the refrigerated section. It cooks faster and generally just tastes better. But you can use boxed pasta, just be aware of the time difference. Before draining pasta, carefully reserve a cup of the pasta water and set aside. Drain the pasta and return the drained pasta to the pot it boiled in (with no water in it).

Pierce broccoli bag with fork two times. Microwave the bag for three and a half minutes on high.

20140511-220829.jpg

After the tomatoes have simmered for twelve minutes, add wine and let simmer for two more minutes.

20140511-215823.jpg

Add a little of the pasta water (about 1/4 cup) and broccoli. Mix.

20140511-215220.jpg

Add pesto to the drained noodles. Add enough pasta water to make it easier to stir (about 1/4 cup. Do not add all of your reserved pasta water).

20140511-220419.jpg

Add pesto noodles to the cherry tomato/broccoli mixture. Stir. Before plating add mozzarella to the pan and quickly mix. You do not want your mozzarella to melt too much.

20140511-214940.jpg

Plate. And eat up! If you have picky kids, and they are old enough, I recommend letting them carefully cut the tomatoes and mozzarella when you are preparing this dish. It will make them feel like they made the dish and they will be more inclined to eat it. Both of my kids always have seconds. ; )

Enjoy! We will be eating this yummy pasta all summer! It just tastes fresh and happy!

P.S. Please do not forget to enter the Blog Giveaway. It ends on the 15th! Thank you!

In The Queen’s Rose Garden

20140510-123048.jpg

I snuck away to a rose garden the other day to take some pictures of my new Frangipani Peasant Top. I kept my eyes peeled for a Cheshire Cat, but in doing so stumbled and fell.

Just call me Tweedledum-b.

I had no idea that Frangipani was a flower until sweet Liana from The Frock and the Hound commented yesterday on my giveaway stating it was her favorite flower. I looked it up and found that Frangipani is actually Plumeria. Who knew? Well, I guess Liana did. ; )

20140510-171604.jpg

I had purchased the Frangipani Peasant Top (sold out, kind of similar Forever 21 version here and slightly similar plus size option here) during the additional 20% off sale items and received free shipping through a store. I was unsure about it, because it was so expensive. But it was like nothing I had ever seen before. I am a sucker for baggy clothes. Especially baggy clothes with floral and crocheted lace.

I was ignorantly calling it, “Fran-ja-pan-neeee,” with a deep Southern twang around my house. Having no clue of its definition, I just thought it was a fun word to say. And whisper in my husband’s ear.

He loved that.

20140510-170541.jpg

We went to the local rose garden to take pictures. I felt like Alice wandering through The Queen’s Garden. Except instead of falling down a rabbit hole, I fell into the cactus behind me. I, of course, would manage to fall into the only cactus in the entire rose garden. I did not say, “Frangipani!”, when I fell. Although, now that I think about it, that would be a great exclamation. Certainly more appropriate than what I probably said.

20140510-170639.jpg

I love my new Anthropologie Scalloped Monogram Bracelet that I wore that day. I have two of them. One with my initial and the other with my husband’s. I cannot wait to pair them together.

20140510-171303.jpg

The roses are gorgeous right now. It was nice to see blooms with this drought going on. It is such a peaceful place. Each time I am there, there is no one else visiting. They must be scared of The Queen.

20140510-171230.jpg

I even wore my Rabbit Earrings to sneak through the garden. If you will notice, the rabbit has two different colored eyes. Kind of like a certain Mad Hatter. You don’t think this is the secret love child of The Mad Hatter and The White Rabbit do you?

If it is, you know I will love them even more. Does that make me mad?

20140510-171802.jpg

20140510-171727.jpg

Do you have a rose garden near you? Be sure to visit it soon. The best blooms will be gone in three weeks. And with them, any chance to visit Wonderland or the opportunity to yell, “Frangipani!” at a cactus. And that would be a shame to miss.

This giveaway is a bit different. It is actually being sponsored by the lovely Heather from The Peacock Fairy. This is Heather wearing another one of her creations (this is not the necklace being given away. That one is in the following picture). Heather and I met through blogging and we have found so many similarities between ourselves. We both share a love of bohemian clothes. Cooking. And peacocks!

There is a big difference between us and that is that Heather is talented in jewelry making. She even uses a wood burner. I find this incredibly cool!

She owns the shop, The Peacock Fairy, on Etsy. She is so creative.

The Peacock Fairy is sponsoring this giveaway with a necklace that she created.

20140509-232911.jpg

It is so pretty. I covet it. The design is like nothing I have seen before. It is the epitomy of feminine romance.

20140509-200504.jpg

She sweetly gifted me my own necklace, too. It has a gnome inside. Isn’t that the coolest?! I cannot wait to wear this everywhere!

20140509-200425.jpg

This giveaway will have four ways to enter.

The first and foremost being to leave a comment here on this blog about your favorite flower and why that is. Or the last time you gifted someone flowers or were gifted flowers. Did your partner ever give you flowers unexpectedly? You can answer any of these flower questions or make one up on your own. You could also just leave a nice comment on this post and that will suffice as an entry.

The second way to enter is to visit Heather’s shop and leave a second comment on this post stating which jewelry piece is your favorite that she has made.

The third and/or fourth way to enter is to leave a comment stating you are a registered reader of my blog and/or Heather’s blog. Each blog that you are registered for (there are many ways to register on the right hand side of this post. Facebook counts! And Heather’s twitter follow button is on the top right hand corner of her blog page and her Google Friend Connect button is in the middle on the right) counts as an entry. You must leave a comment stating you a registered reader of that blog. If you are a registered reader of both blogs, you may leave one comment stating that and I will count it as two, but it must be stated as such.

Limit four entries per person. Since I count the comments at the end, you must leave a comment for each method that you are entering with, unless stated otherwise.

This giveaway runs from May 10, 2014 12:00 a.m. PST to May 15, 2014 9:00 p.m. PST. I will be using random.org to choose one winner for the necklace from the comments entered on this post.
