Folk Tale

IMG_1725.JPG

This Free People black dress that I purchased last summer continues to be one of my favorite pieces in my closet. I previously wore it with sandals, but I wanted to try belting it with tights and boots for this season. The dress I am wearing is sold out, but I adore the look of this dress in white. It has a similar easy vibe.

IMG_1732.JPG

I love the longer back. I sometimes hate the new high-low trend, but it works with my lifestyle.

My lifestyle being that of a klutz. I am always dropping things and having to bend over and get them.

IMG_1741.JPG

Case in point, the other day I was wearing my denim shirt “dress.” Thankfully with tights. I was in the grocery store. I had gone inside for two things and as I was walking to the register, I somehow managed to pick up ten items. I had them precariously balanced in my arms.

IMG_1736.JPG

I probably would have made it to the register without a mishap, had I not at that moment noticed my children’s kindergarten teacher with her husband in another aisle.

We locked eyes and as I went to wave, I proceeded to drop all of my items on the floor. Three times! Over and over, I bent over and picked up cans and packages of cheese and chips.

It was mortifying.

I am sure the people behind me probably thought it was even more so.

I really could have used a high-low dress that day. Who am I kidding? I could use a high-low dress everyday.

IMG_1704.JPG

Let’s move along from my mortification. I purchased this vintage folk belt from Modcloth last year (previously worn here). I love it so much. I keep it on my dresser instead of with my other belts because I am scared of it breaking.

IMG_1702.JPG

I took these pictures on my dad’s property. I think I only explored this road once as a child. I was not very adventurous. Besides, the possibility of rattlesnakes curbed my desire to walk around.

IMG_1734.JPG

Did you explore your neighborhood growing up? Or were you exploring worlds in books like I was? And when am I going to learn that I always need a grocery cart, even when I am “just running in”?

Girl In The Moon

IMG_2718.JPG

I put this outfit on for a date with my husband.

It had been spinning in my mind ever since I scored this awesome moon Top from Anthropologie on a popback sale price of less than $20.

I was over the moon about my new score.

IMG_2705.JPG

I put it all on and paraded into the living room to show my husband.

“What do you think of this outfit?” I excitedly squealed.

He studied it for a moment.

“Meh,” he said as he shrugged his shoulders.

IMG_2706.JPG

I was kind of crushed as I made my way back to our bedroom to search for something else to wear. I ended up picking this.

IMG_2710.JPG

The next day my daughter casually said to me, “Mom, remember that outfit you put on yesterday with the moons and the moon and star necklaces. I can’t stop thinking about it. It was the best outfit I have ever seen. If I could ever have an outfit like that one day, I would be so happy.”

“Really?!” I grinned from ear to ear.

I am sure at some point when she moves away for college, this outfit will disappear, but until then I was so happy to hear that maybe I wasn’t so wrong with my choices.

IMG_2712.JPG

Later in the week I ended up wearing the outfit.

IMG_2719.JPG

Blue is my favorite color. I adore all of the different shades going on here. I had purchased this skirt from Modcloth many moons ago. My favorite way to wear it is over my Colima Maxi Skirt. I love layering hi-low skirts. It makes me happy.

I think that this works as well.

IMG_2708.JPG

My small moon necklace is from on Etsy. The white star necklace was a Christmas present from “my husband” in 2013.

IMG_2715.JPG

My Astrological sign is Cancer. Its planet symbol is the moon (I know). I love when I can find pieces with the moon shape that are not over the… top. Do you get a rise out of sale items? Do you collect any astronomy items? I once took an astronomy course in college. Oh, vey. I think I confused astrology for astronomy. Do you know how much math is involved in astronomy? It’s lunacy. I totally spaced out. Went to the dark side. Thankfully it was just a phase.

The Best Dress Of The West

IMG_2097.JPG

I keep catching glimpses of folks claiming that this pattern (from here on called Ganado*) days are numbered in its trendiness. But it has been around long before the past few years. In fact, my favorite style, or decade as it were, was the seventies, and this print was all the rage back then. Thus, any time I wear it, I do not think of fads, but rather it being just a tribute to a period of style that I adore.

IMG_2100.JPG

Besides, who cares about fads or trends any way? I wear what I want when I want to and never ever let what is in or out dictate what I wear.

IMG_2111.JPG

Of course, this does not mean I claim to be a fashion expert. Ha! Hardly that. I just know what I like. And knowing what you like is most of the battle. Knowing what looks good on your body type is the other part. Mix that with your budget and the chemistry formula for your style is done.

IMG_2101.JPG

Who knew I was such a scientist?

IMG_2102.JPG

I purchased this Ganado print inspired dress from Modcloth many years ago. In fact, it was my very first purchase from that company. But you can find a similar style almost everywhere. In looking for a similar dress, I found this one, but honestly look at this whole page of these printed dresses from Forever 21. There are so many of them, and they also come in plus sizes.

IMG_2107.JPG

I have a confession. Contrary to what you probably were thinking, I am not a gymnast any more than I am a scientist. I know, it is quite a shock. I will give you a moment to let that register.

I cannot believe I am sharing this “action” shot with you. My kids roll on the floor at how very high I can jump.

IMG_2098.JPG

Let’s move on to something less embarrassing… Hopefully. I had a post up yesterday about the lip pencil products I am currently in love with. These pictures show more of the Iberico color I was terrified of. Whenever I am truly scared of something, I usually make myself do it. Whether that entails ziplining or trying on a lipstick, it is all the same. I do not, however, ever recommend going up behind a cop to ask for directions while he is arresting someone. Don’t ask how me how I know that, just trust me.

Also, stay away from people talking to trees.

Or urinating on them.

Let my past be your guide as to what not to do.

Except for lipstick, always have fun with lipstick.

IMG_2099.JPG

Do you own any Ganado inspired print clothing? Do you care about following fads or not following them? And what is your stance on public tree affection? I don’t mind a quick hug, but those branches are a bit tough for me to handle.

P.S. Did you purchase anything during the after Christmas sales? I picked up this throw in the orange and green colors, some candles and a Christmas garland for next year. The trees told me to do it. And I cannot resist their call.

*When writing this post, I kept coming upon the terms “tribal” and “ethnic” to describe this print. This felt wrong to me. There are so many gorgeous and beautiful cultures and ethnicities that to clump them all together when stumbling upon a pretty pattern felt gross. However, it seems that some stores have not caught on to this and continue to group everything together. So, I googled the terms and found this article. I learned that the pattern on my dress is more aptly called Ganado, inspired from this pattern originating with the Navajo people.

Now, let’s all stop using those terms and peeing on trees… In that order, of course.

Bow Me Over

IMG_0153.JPG

I have owned this dress for years and years. I originally purchased it from Anthropologie. I cannot recall its name. I have rarely worn it.

IMG_0412.JPG

My husband always told me it was too short.

But I decided to pair it with tights the other day to hide the length.

I do not know if it worked, but it made me feel better.

By the way, I had to edit this picture and I am now forbidden from carrying this little blue gnome in pictures anymore. On the ground is fine. But my husband says he doesn’t look like a gnome when I am carrying him. Whoops!

IMG_0150.JPG

I originally began thinking about this dress when I was browsing Modcloth’s website and fell in love with its twin. I thought to myself, “That dress is so cool. I love the bow in the back.”

It took me a few moments to realize that I all ready owned a dress almost exactly like it. Except I like Modcloth’s version a little better. Their bows seem more sturdy and structured as opposed to my floppy bows.

IMG_0156.JPG

I got so excited to style the dress with my bow boots from Anthropologie. These boots are sold out, but Modcloth has a similar boot this year.

Do you see the rubber on the bottom of my boot’s heel? It has collected tiny rocks and it makes the heel slip on smooth surfaces. It also creates a horrendous noise. It has been that way since I first wore them. Do you have any idea what I can do to fix this? It makes me not wear them too often.

I also think if I wore this outfit again I would pair it with a more neutral tight. I like these tights, but I am not so sure of this combo.

Oh well, at least they’re not bowing. Fun wins every time for me.

IMG_0154.JPG

Just like this octopus bracelet I wore this day. What does an octopus have to do with bows?

Who bows? I guess you could make the connection that my dress is blue and octopuses live in blue water.

Then they could be tied together.

IMG_0147.JPG

Do you ever have a moment when you realize that you really like an outfit, and then have an even better moment when you figure out that you can recreate it with items all ready in your closet? Do you have anything in your closet that you have never worn or barely wear? What makes you hang onto it?

I think I fear I will one day need the item in question. If I didn’t have it, I might be remorseful.

Bow what I’m sayin’?

*I shared this on Because Shanna Said So.
