Heeeeey! Classy Lady

20140202-213201.jpg

Nothing is more exciting than a date night. I have worn this dress for a date night before, but forgot to take a picture. That was a few months ago. This time, I remembered.

Classy.

I have never been called that word. I just like saying it. But you have to always say it like Jack Nicholson and give it some jazz hands.

“Classy.”

That makes it classier. Trust me on this.

This dress is Anthropologie’s Lace Alhouette Dress. I bought mine in November during that great sale on sale dresses promotion. It is sold out, but you might be able to score a popback or still find one in a store.

20140202-213045.jpg

My husband loves this dress. Which is why I bought it. I knew he would. It is a fit and flare. A man’s favorite.

20140202-212516.jpg

The belt. Oh that belt. It is the Kissing Bunnies Belt by Anthropolgie. I am wearing a small. The belt may not scream demure. But I have never really been that word. So bring on the bunnies! And I had forgotten to clasp the belt at the top, so my bunnies were not kissing. Poor guys. I did fix it before we left on our date, but not for the pictures.

20140202-214331.jpg

I also paired it with my pink trench coat. I think I bought this eight to ten years ago at Anthropologie. It is really old. But it is my favorite jacket to pair over dresses.

We went to a sweet little restaurant in town for burgers and fries.

Cause we’re…

Classy.

What is your favorite date night dress to wear?

Pajama Party

20131222-225737.jpg

I love my friends (my sweet sister being one of them).

Every year, I invite them over for a pajama party to watch a Christmas movie. This year we watched, “Four Christmases.” They were all too polite to rat me out, because the fact is, we had all ready watched this movie two years before. There are just not a lot of Christmas movies to choose from. I started this tradition with my all time favorite Christmas movie many years ago (and to be honest, one of my favorite regular movies, too), “White Christmas.”

Most of the girls didn’t like it.

So, now that is what my family watches every December 23rd together. This was what we did as a child growing up. I hope at least one of my children carries on this tradition with their own family. You tell me which child it will be based on the following conversation:

My son: “Mom, you should make everyone watch ‘White Christmas’ at your party. It’s a really good movie.”

Me: “I showed that before, a lot of the girls didn’t like it.”

Shocked gasp from the backseat.

Me: “But, we’ll watch it together in a few days.”

My daughter: “Ugh. Why do you force me to watch that evvvvvery year?”

My oblivious husband: “We don’t force you.”

Mean Mommy to Nice Daddy: “Um, yea, honey, we do.”

Poor kid. I can think of worse things, though.

20131222-230103.jpg

I wore my pink gnome flannel pajamas. I was a wrinkled mess. I briefly entertained the thought of ironing my pajamas, but, who are we kidding? I can’t even iron my regular clothes. There is no way I am ironing something I am going to sleep in. Cross that out. There is no way I am ironing something.

A girl’s gotta have standards.

I did not take any pictures of the gathering. Everyone was comfy and I wanted to respect their laid back coziness without posting it all over the internet. I did take photos of the food, though.

20131222-225650.jpg

I made homemade salsa for the party. I also served some queso dip from a jar, because I got it free with a coupon. Everyone loved the queso, including me. So I will be buying some more when I host my family Christmas Eve.

20131222-225543.jpg

I whipped up a batch of chocolate chip cookies.

20131222-224920.jpg

And homemade chicken pot pies.

20131222-225826.jpg

I tried a Rachael Ray roasted sugar snap pea recipe. I don’t think I prepared the peas right. I have never served them before. Looking at my picture, was there something I was supposed to cut off?

20131222-225610.jpg

The biggest hit of the night was definitely, “it tastes like a cinnamon roll cake.” Yum!

I gave prizes throughout the movie with my spur of the moment drunken trivia questions.

20131222-225147.jpg

Everyone went home with a loaf of cinnamon burst bread from the local bakery. A neighbor gave me this as a gift last year and I really liked the sweet simpleness of the gesture. So, I copied them.

My friend Bridgette looked at the piano and said, “Is that bread on your piano?” This had both of us in hysterics. Because, yes, where else would you put your bread?

20131222-225457.jpg

Some of us girls stayed up until 1:00 in the morning talking. I wish we could have stayed up later, but I was stressed out because my husband had to get up at 4:30 in the morning to go to work. Next year, I will ask him if he could get himself a late shift or take the next day off. It put a (small) damper on the night.

But, regardless, I was so happy and thankful to wind down and laugh with women who make my heart sing (missed you Lizzie). Thank you girls!

And no gathering would be complete without Ollie. He made sure to repel everyone with his continuous dog farts. Do I throw a good party or what? It’s not a party unless everyone is gagging and retching.

At least at my house.

Who needs alcohol when you have a bulldog?

Have you been to any holiday parties recently? Hopefully yours did not involve a flatulent dog.

It’s The Little Things: Christmas Gnomes

20131218-165852.jpg

T’was the week before Christmas
And all through my home
Many creatures were stirring,
Including a gnome.

20131218-165618.jpg

Boxes from Amazon cluttered the house
It was any wonder I still had a spouse.
Stockings and garlands were hung… and then rehung by me
And wee little gnomes frolicked and hid in the tree.

20131218-165536.jpg

A large gnome would greet you when you came to the door
Others perched upon shelves, avoiding the floor.
Every gnome came from hiding to sit and to spy.
Their only intent was to try and stay dry.

20131218-171817.jpg

20131218-165725.jpg

For right underneath their tiny quick feet,
A big creature watched them as if something to eat.
They sat on their deer, their carriage and bus.
Why, one even rode a dragon called, “Gus.”

20131218-165821.jpg

The monster would stretch out, lay down and snore.
Certainly an enticement they could not ignore.
They would wait for his heavy sighs to commence.
Then drop down on his head with a twitch and a wince.

20131218-171923.jpg

Christmas is here, the gnomes’ time has come
Soon they will be locked up with the candles and rum.
For now they grab whiskers and swing from fat jowls
The thing they shall miss? The strange creature’s howls.

20131218-172007.jpg

I lay in my nightgown, for three days, no less
I thought all was safe in my Christmas mess.
When from the next room, the sound of chewing had grown
I crawled from my bed to see what Ollie had done.

20131218-185055.jpg

The wee man was fine, just a tad bit wet.
There was not even a dent in his red Christmas hat.
On the back of his steed, his strange plotting began…
For the night was still young for this brave little man.

I heard his soft whisper as I tucked him in,
“Until next time, great beast. This time you may win.
Christmas will come, next year I am sure.
Meanwhile, us gnomes will just have to endure.”

Spontaneous Summer

20130919-104644.jpg

We had no concrete plans this summer. The kids went camping with their grandparents. We went to Comic Con. But for the most part, we stayed home…

It turned out to be our best summer yet!

20130916-210254.jpg

One evening, we were out getting food when we saw flashing lights being whirled into the sky. We drove over to see what they were. It was a man selling these cool light toys, that you fling into the air, out of his car in the parking lot. We bought three and left. This was probably our best purchase of the summer! We ended up going to the park many nights and watching the lights soar in the dark.

There is something about being at a park at night. Magical. Eerie. Dangerous? I do not know, but it was so much fun to swing in the dark.

20130917-134649.jpg

Bowling.

20130916-210500.jpg

A road trip just for pie.

20130917-134847.jpg

Swimming. And more swimming.

20130917-134933.jpg

Yummy drinks.

Nights out with friends (pictured with Holli and Kerri).

Lots of yummy fresh fruit. These strawberries were the best from a local fruit stand. The woman selling them told me the key to preserving your strawberries is to lay a paper towel in a large baking dish. Do not wash your strawberries! They will deteriorate faster. Place them directly on the towel in a layer. Place another paper towel. Repeat. End with a paper towel on top. Refrigerate. We bought a lot of strawberries. This worked great!

Our summer was truly relaxing and fun (which is why some of the pics are so bad. Sorry! No good camera when we were being spontaneous). I could not have planned it better. What did you do this summer? Are you sad it is over? What was your favorite part?
