I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday! And for those of you in other countries, I hope you have a lovely Friday. We used to always have a party at our house to celebrate, because we happen to have a great view of the city’s fireworks from our front yard. But my husband keeps having to work on the holiday and so I am I spending it with my kids. He will be home in time to grill dinner and watch the fireworks, but not in time to conduct a party.
I am just hoping the neighbors do not break out their potato gun this year and they do not burn our house down!
Stay safe and happy and enjoy that barbecue! We are making my husband’s lemon chicken.
I have three outfits in my head for the day. I love this Modcloth dress from last year. Another choice will be my white H&M dress with the beaded red, white, and blue necklace and red sandals. Or I might wear my white Free People clearance find from last summer with my vest I just purchased for 75% off.
I could also wear my Caravane Dress shown previously in this post. I figure it will hide the sins of the drink below.
Or since I am not having a party and only my neighbors will see me, I might stick to jeans.
I plan on holding my children close as we watch fireworks. Our car will be on in our driveway and as the local radio station plays the final song as they do each and every year, “Proud To Be An American,” my eyes will well up as they do each and every year. My husband served in The Army and I am just so proud of him and all of the men and women who have served our country. That song always brings it home for me. The sky will explode for a mere moment and my heart will pound to its beat.
I can’t wait!
What are your plans for the day? I am making The Relaxer from Mama’s Fish House as the cocktail of the day. I opted to use pineapple juice instead of fresh pineapple because that is what I felt they did at the restaurant. I changed the quantities of two ingredients. Instead of 1/4 oz. pineapple juice the recipe calls for (I actually think that might have been a typo, because that would only be about a Tablespoon), I added 1/4 cup and instead of 1/2 cup of ice, I added one cup. Here is the recipe. It is amazing! It tastes just like Maui to me. Which I guess means a chocolate piña colada.
Happy Fourth of July!
Happy Fourth of July Jenni from your blogging buddy in the old country. It has been fine BBQ weather in London now for several months (I know!!) and we just happen to have a couple of Quarter Pounders in the freezer so we might have them in your honour!
It’s impossible to be too proud of anyone in the Armed Forces that give so much to keep us safe. Shame that your hubby has to work today.
Thank you Stephen. Enjoy those quarter pounders! I am kind of regretting not going with the good ol’ hot dogs and hamburgers traditionally made today. But I had some chicken. I do have watermelon and rice krispie treats! That should make the day feel more like a holiday!
It is a shame he has to work. He does get paid extra for the day, so that is nice.
I have read about your nice weather on your blog and your croquet game. I love croquet, but have not played it in years. Maybe this summer…
Have a happy weekend!
Jenni
P.S. Congrats on your book! I read your blog and keep forgetting to comment! I am so excited for you!
Happy Fourth of July! Enjoy the day : )
bisous
Suzanne
Thank you Suzanne! I am about to go swimming! And not a peep from the neighbors yet! I better not get hit with a potato in the pool!
Have a marvelous day!
Jenni
Please thank your husband for his service from my husband and myself. Happy Independence Day!
Thank you Brynne. I am proud of him. He no longer is in the army. I know so many people that have loved ones currently serving. I think of them on this day. We were so lucky he was in during a peaceful time. I love today. I think it just is a day where everyone feel proud and happy.
I hope you have a beautiful evening! Enjoy those fireworks!!!

Happy Fourth of July, hon! It was my dad’s birthday, and I remember how he used to say he was celebrating it along with all of America! 😉 It’s nice to think back on all the crazy presents I got him – some more successful than others! One year I found the coolest jar of “Hypochondriac Pills – Will Help Against Anything and Anyone”, the jar advertised. I think it was just licorice. But my dad was super offended, haha! We’ve had a very warm and sunny day here, and I’ve spent part of it in our new apartment, which is now finally ours! Hope your day is lovely, and well done on recreating that cocktail!
Yay! The apartment is yours!!! Woooooo! Congratulations! I am so excited for you! I love all of the memories you share of your dad. He sounds like he was an amazing guy.
We had a super warm day today, too. The fireworks display was amazing. Seriously the best display I have ever seen. It was creative. I will be writing the city because they need to keep whoever choreographed the display on their payroll forever. Chills.
Have a terrific weekend!

Happy 4th, Jenni! Your day sounds really nice.
The potato gun story was hilarious. I mean for the reader… and your daughter… I find the line about the potato in your pool really funny too. How did they even invent such a thing?
I hope Ollie and Murphy are okay on the 4th! My roommates dog used to hide in the closet – shaking and quivering and peeing – she was so scared, poor thing.
We just came back from a brunch and I think we will spend the rest of the day at home relaxing.
xo
Thank you Cynthia. It was a peaceful fourth. No potato gun! No illegal fireworks during the display. It was really nice. I hope you had a relaxing weekend.
Murphy freaked out like he does and spent the night hiding in one corner to the next. Ollie laid down on his bed and went to sleep. It is so funny how different they are.
Sweet dreams!

Happy 4th of July (belated)! What did you end up wearing?
I’m going to have to try making the Relaxer. Maybe next weekend…
Thanks. It was so “relaxing”! I ended up wearing that purple striped maxi with a red shirt. It was just the comfiest. I looked at the others and could not make the effort! The Relaxer is SO good! But SO many calories. I wish I could have one every day, but I can’t. : (
Have a lovely week!
Jenni
I hope that you had a wonderful 4th and that you were able to enjoy your time with your kids and hopefully some time with your hubby.
Our 4th was very good with lots of people and food. Jack said it was one of his best birthdays yet, so I would take that as a success! Of course, we all missed my grandma, but it was bittersweet, knowing that she would have loved all the people around!
Yay! I am so glad Jack had a good birthday. I have to plan my son’s soon. It seems like we are doing a Minecraft party again. Jack is so lucky to have fireworks on his birthday! I missed my grandma, too. I think as time passes, it gets even harder, because it becomes so much more real the missing presence. I hope your pain eases. It is hard.
Our 4th ended up being great. The food was good and the fireworks were the best the city has ever done. In fact, I have to go write them an email letting them know how much I appreciated them!
Have a great week!
