It’s The Little Things: Head Sculptures

My family and I went to the San Diego Del Mar Fair on Monday and we had a wonderful time. I will have a post coming up soon about the day and the $10 H&M dress that I wore. But while the fair is still going on, I wanted to highlight an amazing find that we discovered while we were there.

They are these wonderful portrait sculptures by Hu Tian. He can be contacted at Hootian at yahoo dot com. I know he can do sculptures based on photos, too, if you are not in Southern California. He is incredibly talented. We are fortunate to have stumbled upon his booth. If you are there this year, it is in the shopping building across from the carousel. I cannot believe what he can create in such a small amount of time.

Each one took about twenty five minutes to make. It was relaxing to sit and watch them coming to life, so to speak, through the clay.

I plan on hanging my sculptures in my living room, surrounding the square arch. They are still drying. It takes four days to cure from the time the clay was created before I can hang them.

The price for these was $52 each, including frame. It was a fantastic price for a really cool piece of a period of time captured forever.

Had you seen something like this before? I had not and it was my favorite thing to discover at the fair.

*this is off topic but I wanted to note it: If you plan on attending the San Diego Fair this year, Costco has the best package. It was $60 and came with parking, four entry tickets, 50 ride tickets, the Passport To Savings book and four free drink vouchers. It was a great deal! We purchased ours at the San Diego Costco on the way to the fair. Maybe a Costco near you also has fair packages for your local fair, if you are not near San Diego.

I shared this on Cozy Little House.

And Savvy Southern Style.

  1. Wow this is just so neat! (do people say that anymore?)

I can’t believe he only charges $52. What a unique art piece. I would love to have one of these, except I think I’d get it of my dog! LOL

    • He does dogs! There were pictures of his portraits there and there were definitely dogs, too! I once had my dog sketched in Central Park by a man from a picture of them. But Murphy ended up looking crazy. Come to think of it, I need to get that framed! And he definitely should charge more. I am grateful he didn’t.

      Have a lovely Friday!

    • Hi Suzanne! I say neat and neat-o all the time. I am glad to hear that someone else still uses it. How about cool beans? I say that too a lot. LOL

Hi Jenni – these are incredible. What a find!

And I would get them of my cats… of course! Double LOL

      • Thank you Cynthia! Yes, I bet he would do cats. Marcy would love that. Oh my gosh. But I bet it would not be a big enough sculpture for her. Best not tell her about it, she’ll never let it go!

        Have a fabulous weekend!

  2. I can’t tell you how much I love these! I wish I could go to the event! I’ll save his email just in case. Can’t wait to see them on your wall!

    • Thanks Kristen! I cannot wait to hang them. I am being extra careful and just letting them cure a little longer. I would hate for them to break.

Have a great Fourth of July!

    • Thank you Liana! I love fairs and markets, too. I found some jewelry there I will be highlighting soon and she has an etsy shop. I plan on doing that on Thursday but I also want to talk about a food product for summer. I guess it will be which one gets precedence in my mind that day.

      Have a beautiful day!

    • Thank you Rebecca! I am so excited to get to hang these on Sunday! I want to wait a few extra days for them to dry.

Have a great Fourth of July!!!

  4. Those are just so beautiful. What a wonderful way to remember your kids ( who are gorgeous) I love this. I am going to have to save his email…I would love to have one of my kids! I am glad that you were able to get those done.

    • Thanks Alicia. I was going to hang them yesterday, but now I am terrified of doing so. Well, that, and I figured my husband would not appreciate me asking him to hang them when he had worked six days this week. I am thinking of asking him to do it on my birthday because he can’t say no, but them I think what if they break on my birthday. That would be awful. So, I am torn. Hopefully they will hang okay. They are just REALLY heavy! And thanks for your sweet words. : )

      Have a happy day!

    • Thank you Jen! The price was great. I still have not hung them up. I am so worried about them falling and breaking. I hope to do it soon, though. They cannot be any safer just sitting on my dining room table.

Thanks again. Have a wonderful week!
