Spontaneous Summer

We had no concrete plans this summer. The kids went camping with their grandparents. We went to Comic Con. But for the most part, we stayed home…

It turned out to be our best summer yet!

One evening, we were out getting food when we saw flashing lights being whirled into the sky. We drove over to see what they were. It was a man selling these cool light toys, that you fling into the air, out of his car in the parking lot. We bought three and left. This was probably our best purchase of the summer! We ended up going to the park many nights and watching the lights soar in the dark.

There is something about being at a park at night. Magical. Eerie. Dangerous? I do not know, but it was so much fun to swing in the dark.

Bowling.

A road trip just for pie.

Swimming. And more swimming.

Yummy drinks.

Lots of yummy fresh fruit. These strawberries were the best from a local fruit stand. The woman selling them told me the key to preserving your strawberries is to lay a paper towel in a large baking dish. Do not wash your strawberries! They will deteriorate faster. Place them directly on the towel in a layer. Place another paper towel. Repeat. End with a paper towel on top. Refrigerate. We bought a lot of strawberries. This worked great!

Our summer was truly relaxing and fun (which is why some of the pics are so bad. Sorry! No good camera when we were being spontaneous). I could not have planned it better. What did you do this summer? Are you sad it is over? What was your favorite part?

It’s The Little Things: Crushed Garlic

All right, I hate to keep repeating myself. But, it needs to be said again. “I am lazy.” Right now I am writing this post. I should be vacuuming. Or doing laundry. Enough said.

20130918-131821.jpg

And I love to cook. Enter all-ready-crushed-and-pureed-for-you garlic.

I buy my garlic in this handy dandy little case. It comes in servings of 20. Each serving is one clove of garlic. It is kept frozen. I also sometimes purchase minced garlic in the jars. You can find the jars in the spice aisle of most grocery stores.

20130918-131925.jpg

The garlic is in tiny little pockets all of its own. Besides making cooking easier, this is frankly adorable. And cooking and adorable go together like….hmmm. Well. Not at all. Movin’ along.

20130918-132010.jpg

I use this in any recipe that calls for garlic. I buy mine at a little specialty food store near my house. It is in the frozen vegetable aisle. It is inexpensive. It is wonderful.

20130918-132112.jpg

It’s the little things: not smelling like garlic. Not having to chop garlic = Less work = Happy lazy girl.

Do you chop your own garlic? Or do you use prechopped like me? Do tell!

“Hip” It Real Good

My style has been evolving from very feminine (a-line dresses and poofy skirts) to more bohemian. Hippie, if you will. I still love poofy skirts. But I also love an easy breezy layered look. Complexity is the key to happiness, afterall.

The other day, I turned to my husband, laughing and said, “Hey honey. When did I turn into such a hippie?” I was wearing the outfit below.

He replied, “I don’t mind.”

: )

This skirt is from Free People. When I purchased it, it was 75% off. It is called Manina Colorblock Skirt. It is still available (as of this writing) in this color, in all sizes. This blows my mind. This is one of my favorites. I love this skirt. It can really twirl.

The top is from Free People, Keep Me Tee. I used my birthday discount for it. I tie it at the waist. The necklace is from Anthropologie last month. It is a layering necklace.

This was another purchase in August with my birthday discount. It is the Free People Rizzo Skirt. I am wearing it in a medium. It has ruffles. Ruffles. Swoon.

The shirt was a sale find also from Free People called We The Free Big Wave Tee in the fatigue combo. It is definitely a muddy grey, rather than green. It is also a medium. The belt is an Obi Belt from Free People. The boots are from the flea market. The earrings are from Anthropologie, years ago.

Here we have a sale find from last year. I scored it for 75% off. I paired it with boots and bee hive earrings from Anthropologie. It was called Glimmered Ankita Dress. It is from Anthropologie.

Have you jumped on the “hippie” bandwagon? Or would it just be wagon? Or van? And would ending this with, “Peace” be appropriate? Or is that just slang?

I would make a terrible “hippie.”

P.S. I shared this on The Pleated Poppy!

Operation Spider Rescue

20130916-141452.jpg

“I just about had a heart attack!”

My husband came running into the room panting. He began rummaging around our dresser. Papers were being tossed about. He was frantic.

“What happened?” I was not worried. This pretty much happens every time my husband goes outside. He is quite the adventurer.

I could guess it would have something to do with spiders. It has been our obsession for the last three weeks. We have had an unfortunate infestation of brown widows in our backyard. They have made every crevice under every piece of our furniture their luxurious breeding ground.

My husband had gone outside to try to remove more webs. The exterminator was coming to spray for the third time (this month) everything down with a delightful mix of poison which seems to do nothing except make the ground wet for five minutes.

20130916-141548.jpg

“There is the biggest green spider on the fence! I thought it was a praying mantis. So, I went to pick it up. But right when I almost touched it, I realized it was a spider!”

He paused here to catch his breath. Then he exclaimed excitedly, “I’ve got to get a picture of it!”

He grabbed the camera from his bedside (don’t ask) and dashed outside. Not one to miss seeing a creature in my yard (or a funny story in case it jumped on him), I followed.

20130916-141740.jpg

It was a magnificent spider. One of its legs was missing. I could only hope this was a war wound from a victorious battle it had had with a brown widow.

After my husband finished taking pictures, I looked at him.

“The exterminator is coming!” I proclaimed in my best voice of panic. To which I seem silly. I guess I am a hypocrite killing one species and wanting to protect another. But this green spider couldn’t land my family in the hospital.

We looked at the beautiful spider and pondered our next move.

“Well, you’re just gonna have to move it.” I said.

My husband did not seem pleased. But he realized it was what he had to do. That is his role in this household, designated spider mover. He has had plenty of practice with the daddy long legs we keep all over the house. My role is to scream, wring my hands, and give unhelpful advice.

I am available for hire.

20130916-141626.jpg

My husband finished taking his pictures and delicately moved the spider (which we later looked up and realized was a Green Lynx Spider) to the trees behind our house.

“With his hands?” You ask.

Oh no. That would be taking this little grand sad adventure too far. On a stick. The spider was moved on a stick.

A very long stick.

We spent the entire day waiting for the exterminator to arrive so we could ask him not to spray the trees and watch to make sure this was actually carried out. Yes, we wasted spent the entire day protecting this one spider.

Again, available for hire.

20130916-141819.jpg

My husband just loves nature.

As for me, I am sitting here watching the wet ground where the exterminator has just sprayed. It is drying.

I swear I can hear a web being made.

My husband is very excited.
