I looked at this and knew, just knew, it could not be good for me. However, I had never had chicken fried steak (the name confused me and turned me off). I decided to be brave and try it.
Unfortunately, I only ate 1/3 of a serving, because I would like to be able to still wear my clothes. My husband ate an enormous amount and said it was his most favorite thing I have ever made him. So, I responded, “Happy Birthday, honey.” His birthday was almost three months ago. I never got around to cooking him a meal, because we took a trip to Seattle to celebrate.
I will only be making this for him once a year. It is so fattening. It is so much work. I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. The meal was over and I was faced with a mountain of dishes. I think it was good. I am not a huge gravy fan…My husband is shaking his head in shame.
If you love gravy, you will love this.
I followed The Pioneer Woman’s Chicken Fried Steak recipe exactly.
I used my own mashed potato recipe.
Here are the pictures of the process I went through:
Have you ever had chicken fried steak? What do you think? Have you made it? Did you think the dirty dishes were worth it?
This looks very good, but (like you said) really hard! Do you think it’d taste okay with tenderized chicken? I love gravy – I’d dip candy in gravy if it wouldn’t make everyone around me turn green. Let me know what you think about substituting chicken? xoxoxo
Then it would just be fried chicken. I think it would be okay with chicken. You might not get the glorious drippings, though. You would probably need more butter for the gravy.
I say you probably cannot mess anything up if you fry it!

I absolutely love PW. 🙂
Me, too. I have never made anything of hers that has turned out poorly!
Have a great day!

Yes, I love it, but I try to forget it exists! I only made once, and you’re right, so much work, I won’t do again. But I would love to eat yours:)
Yes, we never had it growing up. I did not know it existed! I will not be making it for at least nine more months. Way too much work! My husband could eat it every night.
Love you!
