Lady In Red… Embroidery

IMG_2656.JPG

I have mentioned before that maroon is not my favorite color. Well, I am not a huge fan of red either. I don’t not like it. I just don’t like it very well either. I think it is a very hard color to wear. I have a pair of red boots and it absolutely terrifies me to wear them. Red is very attention grabbing.

I don’t really like attention.

“I know.

The irony.

Or idiocy does not escape me,” says the public blogger.

When someone is paying attention to me, it makes it very difficult to eavesdrop on them.

IMG_2661.JPG

It also makes it difficult to finish the interesting conversation one was having with oneself. Just when you are about to learn where the bodies are buried, the stranger’s eyes will meet your own and you will have to stop the secret whispering.

Please tell me I’m not alone.

I had forgotten all about this dress until I was lamenting to my husband as I was getting ready for our date, “I have nothing to wear.”

I was only half joking.

IMG_2657.JPG

Everything I pulled out of the closet just seemed wrong.

I find it harder to dress for a date with my husband than anything else.

He is not fond of my loose-fitting frocks. Or my hippie skirts. I wanted him to think I looked pretty while still staying true to myself.

I found this dress (old and sold out, similar dress here) tucked in the back of the closet wedged somewhere between my Kantha dresses, gnome costumes and my dignity. I had wondered where that went. I hastily threw it on with my fringe booties and big rose earrings.

When I came out of the closet, my husband commented, “I like that dress.” And both me and myself were pleased.

We ended up going to a restaurant that we always do. It was lovely, although not as lovely as usual. The food was not on par with our past experiences. It is an outdoor restaurant.

IMG_2652.JPG

It was cold. I ended up keeping My Vegan Leather Jacket on all night (previously worn here and here).

I wore the dress to the post office later in the week and I had two people stop me to tell me that they just loved the red embroidery.

Now I will never know where those bodies are buried.

Don’t look too closely at those mounds behind me.

Do you have a fear of wearing red? Do you talk to yourself in public? Do you always go to the same place on a date? If the meal was not up to par would you say something? I will admit that I said nothing. It would have made my face red even thinking of doing so. And one spot of red was enough for one night.

P.S. I shared this on The Pleated Poppy and Reasons To Dress.

  1. That dress is gorgeous. Blonds normally look great in red. I am so happy to hear that you kept those amazing tall red boots. However, if in the future you don’t think you want them anymore…I will happily take them off your hands! ; P

I try to avoid talking to myself in public. At home…anything goes. Just ask my pug.

I too am often too polite to tell someone when the food it bad. I’m trying to change that though. Sometimes it is literally inedible. I have sent some stuff back now and I’m kind of proud of that, although the next meal they brought out was only marginally better, at least they didn’t charge us for the meal. That is another reason we only eat out about once every 2-3 weeks. I can cook better than 90% of the meals we get outside.

  2. I would not have thought of pairing the dress with the jacket but I love them together.
Like you, I would not have said anything about the meal. I one time left a glass of old, BROWN Zinfandel (yes, it was brown) on the table upon leaving and did not say a word.
Hello, let me introduce myself. My name is Brynne ~~ I am an introvert.

  3. I think I too have a fear of red. You’re right, it just says look at me! I did buy a red tunic this winter & I think I have a red t-shirt (I have many maroon t-shirts since it & gold are our college’s colors. I’m not a sports fan & don’t wear any other sports clothes, but I do love to feel nostalgic in my college tees, despite the fact that I never owned one when in attended college!) I can’t say enough how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS DRESS! I think that red pops beautifully on the dk background! I actually have a red embroidered top (white embroidery). Several yrs ago a friend was wearing it & I got it on sale. I think I don’t love it on me as much as I did her, so don’t wear it often. I’ll have to wear it soon so you can see. You’d be so proud of me I ordered 2 free people tunics!!! Sadly, they may be my first free people items. I just can’t afford them all the time, but found great deals, for new items on ebay, so splurged a little! I finally got a trapeze tunic after wanting one for over a year. I saw a friend wearing it & it sealed the deal. I really want the sequoia color (got a blush pink), so I’ll have to keep my eye out for it on a good deal!

Sorry, this I s so long winded. Life’s been busy & I feel as though I haven’t had a chance to comment lately!

    Happy day! :)rebecca

  4. I also talk to myself in public. I am glad I am not alone!
I love wearing red. Once I changed my hair color to brown it became a color that looked good on me.
This outfit is one of my favorites!!
So here is my take on telling your favorite restaurant that their dish was not as good as usual. I worked at the same neighborhood restaurant for 15 years. I had regulars that I just loved and saw all of the time. I really needed them to tell me when their food wasn’t up to par. I wanted to know so that I could talk to the chef and owner to find out what happened. We all wanted to fix it. If it was something that was starting to happen frequently we need to change it so you keep coming back! I imagine that you and your hubby are great customers and the restaurant wants to keep you! Just be sweet and friendly about it when talk to your server and you won’t feel bad about it – especially if they know you!

  5. It seems the fear of wearing red is quite normal… As I have it as well. Perhaps there is some wonderfully fabulous scientific name for this disorder?!? I am absolutely terrible at complaining about food, even when it is horribly awry. For example, when I was pregnant with my son my then mother-in-law came for a visit from out of town and took me out to dinner. We went to a chain steakhouse, where I ordered the steak and shrimp meal. Typically, I like my red meat on the rarer side but as I was pregnant I was very conscientious and told the waiter I needed it well done. Needless to say I was a bit dismayed when my plate arrived at the cow was still mooing and the shrimp were still translucent. But rather than call the waiter back and send the plate back, I sat there for a good half hour picking around the vegetables and making small talk. When the waiter finally came back to check on our table he asked if I would like to box up my meal. At that point I finally said “yes, and could you have the chef cook it first this time. “

  6. This looks so good on you! I just love this tunic. I remember it and wish I would have wish listed it. It is so pretty. I really like red, especially in accessories. I think you look stunning in it. Buy more red 🙂

  7. I love this little red and black number on you! Also, I hope this doesnt make me seem like an attention hog, but I love red, always have! My mom, always had red cars, we always got our nails painted red…so it do not think it has to be a scary color! I love this look on you!
