The Sisterhood Of The Stay-At-Home Jacket

IMG_0473.JPG

I opened up the bag that had come from Anthropologie. I sat there on the floor. Stunned. Staring into the wrapping.

IMG_0480.JPG

My daughter looked up from her cell phone, “Whadja get?”

This jacket,” I replied in a surprisingly monotone voice. The tremors in my soul not vibrating yet to betray my vocal cords. I held it up for my daughter to see (and definitely not to worship, as I held it above my head… on my knees… with my eyes closed).

“Oh. My. God,” was her reply.

“I know right?!”

IMG_0479.JPG

I immediately slipped it on. Its buttery softness engulfed me. I stood and looked into the mirror. I ignored the flannel pajama bottoms and oversized stained t-shirt I was sporting. My hair was piled on top of my head in a greasy four day old mess. The jacket was the star. The scenery did not matter.

IMG_0475.JPG

“Here. You try it on,” I generously proclaimed to my daughter.

She put it on and I rolled the sleeves for her as I had seen another blogger do earlier in the week.

She turned to face the mirror. “I love it! It is soooooo soft.”

“I know. And it is not real leather. It is fake leather. No animals were hurt making it!”

My husband piped up from the corner of the room. “Were any fake animals hurt in making the fake jacket?” He quipped.

He knew I would ponder that all afternoon if I let it get to me, so I ignored his question and turned my attention back to my new favorite purchase.

IMG_0476.JPG

“We can share it!” I proclaimed. This is kind of amazing because I am a size 6-8 and my daughter is a size 0-2. But the size medium fit us both perfectly (on me it is more fitted and on her it is looser). It was just like that book/movie with those traveling pants. Minus traveling. And pants. But you know what I mean.

I actually was going to break my cardinal rule and let her be on the blog for this post. She had been wanting to. But when I asked her if she wanted to take pictures with me for this post (I thought it would be funny to have pictures of us fighting over the jacket), she vehemently declined. Why? Because she did not want anyone to say that she looks like me. Sigh. And so it begins continues.

IMG_0481.JPG

I will still share the jacket.

IMG_0484.JPG

Now, before you think I am the most giving person out there. That I am sharing my most favoritest (my most favoritest not-a-real-word word) of jackets out of simple selflessness and not greed. This is what I told my husband:

“If we both use the jacket then technically it is only half price for each of us. Technically my clothing budget is only moderately affected.”

“Is that how it works?” Deadpanned my husband.

“Yep.” I like to use my fake logic on him.

IMG_0477.JPG

Do you own a leather jacket? Or a fake leather jacket? Or a traveling pants kind of jacket? If you have a fake pet, please do not show it this post. It would scar it for fake life.

*I shared this on The Pleated Poppy and Reasons To Dress.

*this outfit was inspired by Tifforelie on Instagram. I love how she paired Anthropologie’s Vegan Leather Jacket with Anthropologie’s floral tights. The colors match perfectly. The cream Free People slip is combined with a dress from Forever 21.

    • Thank you Suzanne! I love your leather jackets! And your pencils skirts. One day you might find them missing. ; )

      Sweet dreams!

    • Thank you Sarah! Congratulations!!! I hope you are getting some sleep! I recently scored a dress on a popback for 80% off and she wanted to try it on. It looks so much better on her! But I like letting her borrow things. : )

Have a gorgeous weekend! Enjoy your sweet little one!

  1. That jacket is perfection on you. Your are very nice to share it…though, I DO love the sharing equals more budget money idea. Very smart! 😉
I bought and returned the vegan ruffled leather jacket from last winter. Online it looks like a wonderful soft rose color that would match everything…in person, it look old and very, very dirty. Not a cool distressed like it looked online, but more like a “this jacket has never been cleaned for 100 years”. I have been leery of anthro’s vegan jackets since. I am so glad this one turned out so well for you!

    • Thank you Alicia! Okay, I am so glad you said something because I was thinking of tracking down the ruffled leather one from last year on eBay in a different color. That would have been awful to get a jacket like that! I did not edit these pictures at all, so the color here is exactly what it looks like in real life. I am sorry your jacket did not work out. I hope you find one that does. I know I will get tons of use out of this one.

Enjoy your weekend! I hope it is fun!

  2. wooooow wow I love it love it love it!!!
Yes, I do have one real leather jacket from Free People, and no I don’t have fake leather one yet. You made me want this so bad! You look stunning! Wish I could see your daughter in it too!! Go tell her!!

Well, I decided to move to Del Mar, so we might meet in person one day! lol interesting!!

    • Thank you Keiko! One day your daughter will be wearing your clothes. : )

Yay! You will be an hour away! I will email you details about where we live this weekend. I am excited for your new adventure!

      Sweet dreams!

  3. That jacket is incredible! Wow! I clicked over and saw that they had it in olive green so now I want the green one. Vegan leather is really looking luxe lately!

Ahhh… I want to see your daughter in the jacket! Tell her that – yes – most everyone will say how much she looks like you but that that’s a great compliment. And even if she looks nothing like you we will all still say it anyway because it is just one of those things in life that people always always always say. Like talking about the weather. It’s just our human way of connecting and caring. I know teenagers so desperately want to be perceived for their own unique person, but us saying that is by no means detracting from her own self. I always get compared to my Dad and oh boy did I not like that when I was a teenager. Now of course I wish I hadn’t let that bother me.

    xoxo

    • Thank you Cynthia! The green one looks so yummy! I have it in my wishlist, too. And the black. ; ). I love this jacket!

You hit the nail right on the head. She just wants to be her own individual person. I get it. People used to say that about me when I was younger, too. I used to be bothered by it and now I think that is so silly. My mother is beautiful. I am kind of glad I did not put her on the blog. The internet can be a harsh and scary place. But I still owe you those tights picture AND she is now wearing kitty ear headbands to school. She would be Marcy’s biggest fan if she ever met her in person!

      Have a super weekend!

      Jenni

      • Is she wearing her kitty ear headbands for fashion or because it’s Halloween?Either way that is so cool!

Yes – probably not a good idea to put her on the internet. It is truly a mean and scary place. Or parts of it are and you never know when the meanness will strike. Have you been following what is happening to females in the gaming industry lately? Truly frightening.

      • She wears them for fashion. : ). It is a new trend here. A lot of girls are doing it. Marcy would be so proud!

I had not heard about the gaming industry until I looked it up. And that is scary! Anonymity causes fearless meanness.

        Have a happy week!

  4. OOOHHHH, so pretty! I also really loved the bow dress, tights, & bow boots, a lot! You looked so good in it! I think that outfit looked like my go to outfit, loved it, & loved it on you! I’m so looking forward to wearing colder weather clothing on a regular basis & to break out my scarves!! OOOHHHH, maybe I’ll wear one to work tomorrow!

I would have loved to see you & your daughter fighting mover the jacket, which by the way, like butter!! (I’m sure you know the ’90s skit from SNL, of mike Myers’ coffee talk maven, oh how I loved that, quoted, & imitated it often! 🙂
I understand about not wanting to put your kiddos on the blog. I think, when I started mine, I was mostly at home with them, a lot, & that was my outlet. And, since they were (still, & will always be) center in my life, I post them. also, it was, & still is, how our families keep up with us, check up with us, so, that’s why. I felt that I was protecting us by not using our last name, our professions, & some more personal info. For a couple of years I kept what state we live in a secret. Then my husband said that was ok, & people could probably figure it out anyway. Also, I don’t “market” my blog in any way. I love participating in link ups, but I’m not very technically savvy, so I don’t know how to do all that fancy stuff. I don’t even know how you generate money, either through advertising or links (like you do). Maybe we could have a lesson someday?!

Happy day & week to you!!
    :)rebecca

    • Thank you Rebecca! I love the cold weather, too. But I know it is because I never actually get the real cold weather. I would be a wimp in actual snow. So, I will gladly take California’s fickleness even if it makes me frustrated sometimes.

I have never seen SNL. Not once. I know! What is wrong with me? ; )

I think having kids on blogs is such an individualized personal decision. I always knew my blog would be public so I decided not to do it. This is partly because of the way a big blogger’s child was talked about. People are ruthless. And I have been stalked before. I did not want that to happen to my children. So, for now, they still remain off the blog. But I would never judge anyone else for putting their kids on their blog. I know it is a tough decision and I get it. Plus, like you said, it is nice for distant relatives to see the children. I might change my mind in the future. I almost did this week. : )

Once I figure out affiliate links, I will be happy to share what I have learned. ; )

      Have a fabulous weekend!

  5. Mmmm, that jacket looks delicious on you! I’d have to tickle *and* sniff you if we met up and you were wearing that. So generous to offer sharing it with your daughter. Oversized fitting things are really cute on the right person, you know. 😉 That’s too funny about her not wanting to appear on the blog. But anyway, love this outfit, and love that jacket on you! Been looking forward to seeing you wear it since it popped up on insta.
I have a fake leather jacket, in a darker brown than yours. (From semi-cheapo brand Vero Moda – they have some good stuff!) I used to have one in a lighter, more reddish brown, also fake, but that one became a travelling jacket when I passed it on to my friend/”mutually adopted little sister”. She’d always liked it, and when I got the darker brown (my preference anyway), I didn’t feel like I needed two. She styles with a huge, Russian-style floral scarf, I bet that’d look good on your jacket too… if it ever gets cold enough for that where you live… (Envy is a sin I am experiencing right now, haha!)

    • Thank you Gwen! I bet that jacket looks great with that scarf! You are so sweet to give it to your friend! I bet she definitely appreciated it!

I have never heard of that cheap brand before. I will have to check it out!

I do not want to even tell you our weather forecast this week. ; ). Wouldn’t want you to sin anymore.

      Have a marvelous Monday!

  6. I need this outfit. I love every component, and it’s truly an exercise in contrasts: breezy and cozy, cool and warm, feminine and rugged. The soft pinks plays off of the rich, warm shades beautifully. I would totally wear this. I’m thinking of how I might recreate it.

I’ve really been loving your color play lately. I’ve found it so inspiring. What I love is that it’s so subtle. Creams, black, and browns. Pinks, creams, and tans. Simple but frosty and cozy and perfect for fall.

I have my pink faux-leather moto jacket that Kyle bought me last year for Christmas. I am so psyched to bust it out and start wearing it again. Now…what cream and brown pieces can I wear with it…?
