Little Short Long Short Black Dress

I had not seen this dress before I noticed it in the sale section while browsing on Free People’s online website. I now know it is because it is listed as a tunic and not a dress. It was called Free People Romantics Same Suit Tunic (now sold out. Slightly similar “tunic” here). I am generally not an impulse buyer, but this was an impulse buy in the summer.

It was odd to me that this was listed as a tunic for a variety of reasons. First, half of Free People’s dresses would really be tops for this thirty seven year old. So, this piece being labeled as a tunic and not a dress made absolutely no sense to me. Second because I really, really liked it and I was shocked to not have seen it before.

But then I looked up the word “tunic,” having previously thought it meant a loose top. But it really is defined as a loose piece of clothing that goes to your knees. So, this fits. And Free People is right once again.

And I was wrong.

Again.

Sigh.

Don’t tell my husband I admitted that.

I paired the dress with some gold jewelry on this day. My cuff from World Market and Honeycomb Earrings from Modcloth.

I know there will be some mixed reviews on the extreme severity of the hem disproportion of this dress. My daughter being a huge not-fan of it.

However, as an extreme champion klutz, having extra coverage in the back for the inevitable picking up of fallen objects is an amazing addition.

Plus, it is as though I have a cape trailing behind me when I walk.

A cape or odd tail feathers. I guess it depends on your point of view.

Maybe I am the superhero of ducks. It would certainly explain many things.

What? You ask.

Hmmmm. I cannot think of any but I certainly have an affinity for quacking.

Hey! I think I see a pond over yonder. Let’s go.

Do you have anything with a hi-low hem line? I will admit that I am getting kind of sick of the trend. But for some reason I still like this piece.

Quack.

P.S. * I shared this on The Pleated Poppy!

*This dress can also be seen in my root beer cake post.

  1. What a great dress and what wonderful photos. The dress looks amazing and so do you 🙂 There is something about a cape that is either super-hero like or has enchanting debonair lady in times gone by. Either way, I’m quackers about them. Duck… quackers… oh never mind!

    • Awww. Thank you Stephen. I appreciate that. I had the hardest time writing the post for those pictures. It just felt too silly, but finally I deleted some pictures and just posted it. I am glad you like it! : )

      Have a wonderful week!

  2. I kind of hope the high-low trend never ends!!! The extra coverage on my bum makes me quite happy most days! ❤️ This tunic!

    • Thank you Lyn! That is why I like it, too. But sometimes I like a dress and then I am sad it is hi-low. I have been wearing this tunic/dress so much. It is easy!

      Have a fabulous week!

  3. As much as I’ve “tried” to like this trend I just can’t get on board with it. The pieces always look like a mistake to me.

I love that you took these shots in a vineyard.

    bisous

    • I get it. That is exactly how my daughter feels about it. I like the extra coverage. I just worry the trend will pass and I will be stuck with a lot of obviously outdated pieces.

      Thank you about the pictures!

      Have a marvelous Monday!

  4. I really like the cape effect. Wait. affect… grrrr… which is it? Anyway I like it and that the longer part has stripes on the inside. It’s a really neat look. I have not tried the high/low hem yet. As with most trendy things I will get on board as soon as it’s considered “over”. Ah well.

    You are so super pretty!

    • Thank you Cynthia. I was just so happy to find a piece of clothing with sleeves I like. I don’t get all of the sleeveless looks this year. Although it did save me a ton of money in not purchasing those items!

      Have a super week!

    • Oh! Thank you are so nice to share the link. And that is a great price! I actually ended up purchasing the sweater last year from a reader that contacted me because she had it. I took outfit photos in it, but I do not think I ever posted them. I need to take new photos.

Thank you again for thinking of me! : )

      Have a lovely week!

  5. I love it! I had a top similar but my daughter said it looked like a butt-cape…that top quickly was returned. your dress, however, is just super cute……I see you wearing boots with this too! I think I love all of your posts with boots hahahaha!

    • Ha! A butt cape! Is it wrong that I like it even more using that term? And thank you for the compliments! : ). I love boots! I have been taking pictures of outfits in them despite the heat, because we are in the fall! I am ready for autumn whether it likes it or not!

      Have a beautiful week!

  6. I love that dress on you, super pretty! And you look. Rey pretty modeling it! I’ve been working so much lately, I’m just catching up on my blog reading!
    Happy weekend to you!

  7. I have loved the high low trend on some of my daughter’s skirts but I have yet to go there. I like the back part of your dress because it looks like there was an extra attention to detail. For me, I would want it a little longer in the front, to kind of catch up to the length in the back and then I may belt it. My idea may or may not work, but it’s fun to just think about different styles anyway.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Stacey

    • Thank you Stacey! I do like the back of the dress. It has a pretty embroidered detail. I like the idea of belting it. I might have to try that! : )

      Happy Thursday!

    • Thank you! It is funny how the word tunic is used sometimes. I hate when I buy a dress that is listed as a dress but ends up being a tunic. It always seems to happen.

      Have a super weekend!

  8. I’m not going to lie, I’m one of those people who are in the non-fan camp of the high-low hem. It’s not what I think of when I think little black dress, but it totally works on you!

    • Thank you! And I get it! Most people I know don’t like it either. I do like this one. It is so extreme that it makes me smile in a weird way.

      Sweet dreams!
