Little Black Dress

Normally I would never buy a sleeveless dress. I hate my arms. But I am not willing to do anything about them, so I just stick to wearing sleeves. “The Lazy Girl’s Guidebook” told me this was okay. I should know. I wrote it. Well, not really. I was too lazy to jot it down, but if I had written it, this is what my advice would say:

“Cover it up.

This advice works for most things.

The End.”

See, book written. Productive day.

I really do like this dress (now sold out. Similar dress here. Similar plus size here). It is so easy and the material is really cool. It is a basket-weave and I love the flirty little ruffle at the bottom. I will layer with this dress in the wintertime, too. This was the outfit I wore on a day I ran some errands. Shhhh. Don’t tell my lazy self.

Maybe you have noticed my kind of rad backdrop?

That was a rug/tapestry purchased from the flea market a few weeks ago. Yes, that is a monkey sailing a sailboat. I have idea what this piece is. It is definitely handmade. We much prefer the backside in the previous picture to the bright front shown above. So, we plan on hanging it backwards.

I do not like to stand too close to it for fear of cooties. Or other substances. Or the fact that it might be able to move on its own via the germs littering its surface.

I really need to disinfect it. Or somethin’.

But alas, lazy and all that.

My husband was thrilled when he saw that I had haggled this piece down and was walking towards him with it. Held out at arm’s length, of course. Neither one of us really wanted to touch it to carry it to the car.

Thankfully, only one of us didn’t write a guidebook on how to be lazy.

I will be posting more detailed shots of the tapestry soon. Including it hopefully actually hanging up… And none of us covered in yellow tape and bugs. But for now, let’s move on.

Whew! Had to sit down. That standing was hard work.

20140721-203045.jpg

I had asked my husband to get a close-up of my new necklace from H&M. Murphy was thrilled to be in these shots.

20140721-203117.jpg

The necklace cost more than the dress (Anthropologie’s Melanie V-Neck). It was $19.99 and the dress was $19.95 (down from $138. Gosh, I love popbacks!)..

The kids’ task on this day was to clean this room. From the debris on the floor you can probably tell that they have read their mother’s handbook.

20140721-203239.jpg

Don’t worry. As punishment, they had to hug that tapestry. And I think I saw it hug them back.

Gosh, I love a happy ending.

20140721-203406.jpg

And it could be worse. I could have made them pose with a necklace.

Or myself.

P.S. * I shared this on The Pleated Poppy!

  1. wowzers! you are quite the hottie in that outfit! you are lovely regardless of what you choose to wear but when you want to rock an outfit, you rock it well!

    • Thank you so much Mark. I have been trying to wear more black. It is fun to play with a new color (to me anyway).

      Have a super weekend!

    • Thank you Brynne! I was supposed to have a house post going up tomorrow, but my husband is working late and I cannot get the pictures off of his phone. It is probably for the best because I also wanted to share a dress before it sells out, so that goes up instead.

      Have a beautiful weekend!

  2. Your arms are lovely! We are our own worst critics though…. I feel the same way about my arms and try to keep them covered whenever possible. I dream of toned arms but like you, I am not going to do anything about it. I HATE working out. You would think lifting a 3 year old all the time would help, but it doesn’t. This outfit is one of my favorites. I LOVE that necklace. I might be near an H & M this weekend so I will have to check it out. I always weight the option of making something myself versus buying it, and that necklace looks quite tedious instead of just forking over the $20. That tapestry is so awesome! I know what you mean about buying second hand though. I love doing it, but it can be gross at times. I found a “Cars” bedsheet for Richard’s new room at the new house at a garage sale for 25 cents. Thank goodness for sanitary wash on our machine!

    • Thank you Heather! I wrote you a long reply and my internet ate it. Those sheets are a steal! I love the sanitary cycle but it takes too long.

I think $20 was a fantastic price for that necklace. I would absolutely recommend it. I hope you can find it. They still had a bunch at our store.

      Have a fun Friday!

  3. OOOHHHH, LOVE that dress! It’s definitely my style too! I love the material, I’m drawn to those fabrics bc they seem so pretty & girly to me. But maybe a muted girly. Not over the top, frilly girly. Does that make sense. Love it’s ruffle at the bottom. The embroidered dress I just ordered has a ruffle on the bottom & that’s what sold me on it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Your arms look great! I know what you mean though bc I think the tops of my arms are thicker than they used to be. I read if you put your hands on your hips it elongates your arms & it works! That’s why I’m always putting my hands on my hips in pics. Though that gets old & sometimes I think I look ridiculous!

Neat tapestry, but I know what you mean about the germs! I suppose you could just hang it outside & spray it w/ Lysol disinfectant. Esp w/ the hot sun, that should kill anything! That’s a perk of living in the รผber hot, sun kills germs & bugs! ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy day to you! I’m actually going to post what I wore later, it’s been a while!

    • I always think you look pretty in your pictures. Thanks for the trick. I will have to try it. I always thought that made my arms look larger, now I need to see.

And thank you about the dress. I really like it. I like it for the wintertime also with a cardigan and tights. Ruffles are the best. We can be ruffle twins!

I will definitely try the lysol. We tried febreze but it is still gross.

      Have a terrific Friday!

    • Thank you so much. I just got mine a few weeks ago and it was popping back all of the time. I would call customer service to see if they have it or keep checking online. I passed on it about four times at this price before I finally decided to take the plunge. I hope you can find it! : )

      Have a great Friday!

  4. You look gorgeous in that dress! So pretty!
I also love that tapestry but am still squirming thinking about the bugs. I wonder if you could get it dry cleaned? I like Rebecca’s idea of lysol and sunlight! Lysol is pretty great.

    • Thank you Cynthia. I had a friend over today and she actually touched the tapestry. I was like, “NOOOOOOOOOO!” But it happened. I will let you know what happens to her. ; )

      Have a beautiful Friday!

    • Thank you Melodee. The popback thing can be tricky. Sometimes there is a ton of stuff and sometimes nothing at all (such as the case this last week). It is fun when you can score something. And it actually ships! : )

      Have a marvelous Friday!

    • Thank you Alicia! So far that thing is folded on that couch in the room. I know where I want to put it. It is just a matter of getting my husband to actually hang it.

I hope you are having a great weekend!

      Jenni

  5. That necklace is wonderful! I’m surprised it came from H&M.

I really love the wall hanging and noticed it right away. Will be interested to hear just how you plan on cleaning it though.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • Thank you Suzanne! It definitely makes me want to go back to H&M to see if they have any more treasures. I have no idea how I am going to clean that tapestry. I tried Febreze but now it does not smell but it is still icky looking. My friend thinks I should soak it in Woolite, but my husband thinks it will disintegrate. So far now it is just folded.

Maybe I will dream up a solution. Have a terrific Tuesday!

      Jenni

  6. I seriously need an adorable black dress like this one. I love how loose and flowy it is – plus the beautiful fabric! Your gladiator sandals and necklaces look perfect with this.

    • Thank you so much Jennie! I hope you get a black dress! I only just started wearing them and I cannot get enough. Thank you for all of the extremely lovely compliments.

      Have a great weekend!
