The Beekeeper’s Daughter

20140722-205047.jpg

I don’t really know what a beekeeper’s daughter looks like in a picture formed in one’s head. Is there a crown of bees involved? Is there a white jumpsuit? A veil?

Well, whichever it is I am sure I do not usually look the part.

Except today.

Today I went full out with the theme.

But hopefully not in an over-the-top way.

I just really love this Modcloth Twofer Honey Dress. I waited for this to hit sale and was ecstatic when it did.

20140722-205115.jpg

I decided to pair it with some booties. Close-toed shoes are a must in Imaginary Bee Land.

20140722-205434.jpg

The honeycomb crochet on this top is just really neat. I love the yellow color paired with the grey. I think it looks modernly bohemian. The complaints about this dress were the sides stick out underneath your arms. This does not bother me at all. I do not walk around with my arms above my head, but I wanted to show you what the reviews meant. You can see it in this picture.

These honeycomb earrings are also from Modcloth. I own a very similar pair from Anthropologie last year. The two pairs of earrings are different because one has a slightly larger honeycomb weave than the other.

This is not important.

Do you know I have only been stung twice by a bee? I find this kind of miraculous having grown up surrounded by them. It just proves that they really are peaceful creatures. That, and the fact that honeybees die when they sting you. : (

You should see my dad with a honeybee. It is like watching a bee whisperer. He lets them crawl on his huge rough hands and soothes them with his voice. Sometimes he will bring them to his mouth (don’t do this!) and breathe hot air on them if they are too cold to fly. It is amazing and something I never tire of seeing.

This bee wrap bracelet is the coolest. I purchased mine for $10 from Nordstrom Rack a few months ago and I cannot find a similar one online. My grandma used to collect bee jewelry and ever since she passed away, I have felt a need to continue her tradition.

I also made waves in my hair using a wave iron I purchased last week (more on this soon. I do not want to link to it until I am absolutely sure I will recommend it. So far I love it, but I want to play with it some more to be certain). I used to wear waves in my hair all of the time a few years ago and then I lost my wave iron and my hair remained wave free for too long.

In Imaginary Bee Land, beekeeper’s daughters always have wavy hair.

It is a fact.

Trust me.

I know.

I invented the place.

Do you ever make a theme for your clothes? Have a story in your head for a particular outfit? Please tell me I am not the only one.

  1. I love this outift… and you look so beautiful and strong… like a bee goddess.. I think it would make your Grandma smile so much as well(knowing her bee history)… the theme is great.. honoring your traditions… great… just wonderful!

    • Thank you so much Lora! I think Grandma would have loved this outfit which is one of the reasons I bought it. I did feel closer to memories wearing it. I am actually the Great Granddaughter of a beekeeper, Granddaughter and daughter, so it is a long tradition. It is sad that neither my sister nor I went into the family business (although my sister has a great excuse as she is allergic).

      Have a beautiful weekend!

  2. Oh my! Before I even got to the part of your post where you talked about your hair, I knew I was going to ask you what you had done. Your hair is even MORE gorgeous with waves. Please don’t wait too long to share your review. I’ve wanted to purchase a wave iron but have been afraid I would be disappointed with my choice. I MUST HAVE THIS!

    • Thank you Brynne! I am so glad that you like it. I love a good wave iron. It gives the look of spiral curls without the work. I hope to have the review with tons of how-to pictures up next Sunday. : )

      Have a cheery weekend!

    • Thank you Heather. I am waiting to jake sure my hair does not get fried before I recommend it so I want to use it a few more times just in case. I hope to have the review up next Sunday.

      Have a terrific weekend! : )

    • Thank you Suzanne! I love the fairy compliment. That is awesome!

Oh, those boots! They were the best score I have ever gotten. They are from Anthropologie and they are Chie Miharas. I think they were called Corridor Booties there although other sites called them something different. I got them as a popback for 75% off. They don’t even sleep with my other shoes. They sit on my entertainment center so that I can stare at them.

      Have a fun Saturday!

  3. Love this look. Very pretty! I am glad you got that dress. What a sweet reminder of your dad.
I love your hair. I can’t wait to see how you do it. Now that I cut my hair, it may not work, but man, when my hair was long, i would have LOVED to do that! It looked so great on you.

    • Hi Alicia. When did you cut your hair? Is it since your post? I cannot wait to see it. I bet it looks great! If it is the length of your beautiful picture on your last post, it will definitely work. I had a friend with pretty short hair and it looked so cool on her.

      Have a happy weekend!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Kristin. I did think of you with this outfit. : ). If you have a Nordstrom Rack near you I would check for this bracelet. It was just $10. They also had the cutest small bee necklace that I also got.

Do you still have your hives? What do you do in those Oregon winters? Did you get any honey this year?

      Have a beautiful Saturday!

  4. Jenni! You look so pretty in all of the pictures =)

Love your dress and your hair especially!! Please share how you do it!

All of your bee things are so cute…I grew up with a good family friend who was a beekeeper! Sometimes we would come home and find a jar of honey sitting on our back porch and knew the bee man had visited! Good memories =)

Have a lovely day in Bee Land :0) ♥

    • Thank you! : ). And your family friend sounds so sweet. I would love to come home to find honey on the porch. I am hoping to share the hair waver next Sunday, but due to some reviews about it, I am being careful and really using it before I share it here. I do not want to recommend a product I do not like. Some people had the product break after three uses, so I want to use it at least twice that amount of time. I guess I am the guinea pig. : ). But I love doing experiments. I do have beauty products I recommend going up in the morning.

Bee Land was awesome today but I really must complain about the messiness. ; )

      Have an awesome weekend!

  5. omg stop that!!!!! You look super cute in that dress!! I want one!! ahhhh!! I just spent so much yesterday and I can’t spend for at least a month… I want that dress… it’s so cute.. seriously…. what a lovely dress!! and you look so darn cute.. can you be my gf?? >< waaahhh sob sob

    • Thank you Keiko! That is so sweet. I do love this dress, but I bet you got some awesome stuff too. Plus you look good in absolutely everything! I took some pictures of some people in WoW gear yesterday and thought of you. The girls’ costumes were awesome!

      Have a magical weekend!

      Jenni

      • I think I saw four girls in WoW cosplay gear. I will post the pictures on Tuesday! : ). I do not play it so you will have to tell me if I guessed right. : )

        Sweet dreams!

        Jenni

  6. You look gorgeous and ethereal … and your hair is amazing! Did you get the dress hemmed? I guess I have no clue how tall you are, but it’s such a nice length on you and I fear it’d be too short on me even though the measurements on the site seem like they’d be good for my height. I’m seriously tempted to treat myself to it to wear post-pregnancy 🙂

    • Thank you Sarah! I am 5’6″ and I did not hem it. I will measure the dress tomorrow including the top measurements and skirt measurements if that helps. You will have so much fun shopping after pregnancy. It is always so exciting to go out and fit into different clothes. They look like they still have an abundance of each size right now. How tall are you? I seem to recall you being a few inches taller than myself but it is hard to remember. I will post in the afternoon on this comment after I find my measuring tape. : )

      Sweet dreams!

      Jenni

      • I am still looking for a tape measure. My husband was supposed to find me one but I did not want to bother him because he came home and collapsed in bed. He thinks he has strep throat! : (. But tomorrow I will ask him when he wakes up where he thinks he might have stashed it. I never can find one when I need one!

        Have a sweet week!

        Jenni

    • I love it and thank you for not leaving me hanging! : ). I am glad to not be the only one. And thank you for the hair compliment, too. I really appreciate it!

      Have a beautiful weekend!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Melodee! My dad is the sweetest. He plays a certain someone at Christmas and is just perfect for the role. He did the bee trick again when I saw him a few weeks ago. I love that! I tried to do it last winter, but I almost sucked up the bee into my mouth. ; )

      Have a splendid weekend!

    • Thank you! : )

That painting is so cute! She is so sweet. Thank you for sharing! I ended up only getting one piece of art at Comic Con and that is only because my husband surprised me with it. There was not a lot of originals there this year. And it was unbearably crowded today. I could not stay on the floor too long. : (

      Have a lovely Monday!

  8. Loooooove this look! Oh my gosh! So pretty. Love the theme and your new waves.

It is so thrilling to hear about your dad’s beekeeping. I would love to see him blowing on the bees. Last night we were eating outside and a bee was trying to get at Freddy’s fried chicken. I had no idea they ate meat! Of course, Freddy let him have some chicken because you know … with the declining bee population we need to do all we can to help them. The bee told his friends and soon we witnessed a bunch of bees having a fried chicken party.

    • Thank you so much! That is so funny what you said about the bee. I never thought that was true about them telling their girlfriends, but my dad mentioned that after one enjoyed a sip of my soda the other day. I have never seen one eat chicken. That is crazy! But good for Freddy for sharing. I do not know if I would have been so nice. ; )

      Get a great sleep!

      Jenni

  9. I’m not sure what a bee-keepers daughter would wear but I doubt few would wear it like you! I’ve never been stung by bees even though last year we had a wild bee nest in the garden. Been stung by wasps countless time, I don’t like them at all.

    • Thank you so much Stephen! Never been stung by a bee! I have seen your gorgeous lush countryside. You are so lucky! Now I have never been stung by a wasp so I will take my bee stings! Wasps are so ugly and mean. I bet those hurt!

I have been waiting to read your Downton Abbey post until tomorrow now that Comic Con is over. I want to savor it over coffee. : )

      Have a happy week!

      Jenni

      • Our bees are very friendly and get on with their own things. It can be unnerving when there are 20 or 30 of them sniffing round the flowers above your head though.

Those Wasp stings do hurt and they can get you several times before they go or you get them! Especially in September and October when they get a bit crazy and sometimes drunk on fallen apples.

I hope you enjoy Downton Abbey 🙂 we had someone stay in our Airbnb room who was acting in Downton just a week ago. There is a wedding in the air 🙂

        Have a lovely day too!

        Stephen

      • I think all bees generally get on with their lives and are not bothered by us. If they do come to investigate, it is just because we look like a big, bright flower.

I have not had my coffee yet! So bummed. We are out because I forgot to pick some up at the store the other day, so my husband went out and got some. But we are waiting for it to brew.

        I hope you had a great day! : )

  11. Those pics are lovely & you also look lovely. They look dreamy to me, like a bee keeper’s daughter would in a fairyland, I think! I love that you carry on your grandmother’s tradition of collecting bee jewelry! I love family legacies like that. That’s the best! 🙂

      • Thank you Jess! I really appreciate that. : ). It is comfy, too!

        Have a gorgeous weekend!

        Jenni

    • Thank you Rebecca! I appreciate that! Anthropologie just came out with some bee hand towels. I am swooning over them. I hope to get to one on Friday and pick some up. They are a set of three so I do not want to wait for them. : ). I hope the store has them!

      Have a happy day!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Tammy! : ). I think I like those booties even more because of the amazing price I paid for them. Otherwise I would be too scared to wear them.

      Have a delightful Friday!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Jessi! My daughter is terrified of bees too, but we keep trying to convince her they love her. It is in her blood! : ). I will be showing how I made those waves on Sunday.

      Have a marvelous week!
