Embroidered Doll Dress

20140708-152053.jpg

I have something I want to say.

“I LOVE THIS DRESS!!!”

Sorry, that was slightly unnecessary. But it is true.

I do.

20140708-152107.jpg

In, fact, I cannot seem to stop staring at the gorgeous embroidery. As demonstrated in my accidental pose above. It just makes me so happy. I had patiently waited for a sale on the Embroidered Peasant Doll Dress, and when it reached more than 60% off, I asked for it for my birthday.

It is short.

In fact, when my husband took these pictures, he exclaimed, “that dress is RE-E-E-A-A-ALLY short!”

This is coming from the guy that never notices if the entire back of my dress is unbuttoned. I knew it had to be a little too short if he was making a proclamation. I tried not to flashback to all of the bending and reaching I did at the grocery store in the dress, the day before. All of this to say, from this point on I will now be wearing a slip under this dress.

Modesty: it’s a virtue a necessity at my age exercise level.

Anyway, I wish I had gotten a close up shot of the neckline. It has little red stitching with the blue.

In the last two photos, I have a hidden little gnome on my person.

It happens.

However, on the ride home, my husband informed me that my gnome bore an uncanny resemblance to my nemesis…

Elf On The Shelf.

And now he is back in my house. And he is surrounded by his multitude of brothers, because he came in a pack.

And I am trying to not freak the freak out.

Maybe I need to go look at this dress again.

20140708-152146.jpg

Ahhhhh, here we go. Isn’t that embroidery lovely? It definitely does not in any way remind me of creepy little dudes in red.

And that Scalloped Monogram Bracelet is now on sale at Anthropologie. I own one with my initial and one with my husband’s.

20140708-152223.jpg

Don’t worry.

I’m simply spinning.

I am not running away in terror.

20140708-152201.jpg

But I will be watching my back… Just in case.

What do you do about dresses that are too short? Do you wear them anyway? Or do you pair them with pants or a slip? I think this will be cute with tights in the winter, but what color should I wear?

  1. I have been sewing on more fabric on dresses that are too short for me. Sometimes it works, sometimes…not-so-much. Then I have to take them to the consignment store.

I love how you wrote this is necessary at your exercise level rather than age : ) You are a gal after my own heart Jenni.

I expect to see you wearing those gnome shoes soon! LOL

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • That is a great idea about adding the fabric! I am glad you got it! ; ). It is the truth. Any age can rock a short skirt, you just have to work for it. Me? I don’t wanna. I saw those gnome shoes! Ha! Do you know they have sold out before?! Ack! I am not quite at that level either. : )

      Have sweet dreams!

  2. I love this dress- it’s so you! In fact, I think what is so great is seeing your bohemian style develop and become more flamboyantly…Jenni. You rock a statement dress like nobody’s business! The details and cut of this dress are sublime.

I have way too many slips to wear under different kinds of dresses, and am always on the lookout for ones with neat hems that will work with this kind of problem. A gorgeous problem. Anthromollogies had some great slips made to order with wonderful lace hems!

A giveaway you say? I have been absent too long!

    • Thank you Sarah! I have been building my style over the last year, so thank you. I finally feel exactly like me. I really need more slips. That is a necessity for me next month. I miss Anthrmollogies. And I love her slips. I have seen them on Etsy and have thought of taking the plunge, but Modcloth has some great ones lately.

      Have a fantastic week!

  3. This dress is amazing! That embroidery! The rich navy against the crisp white! The boho-gypsy wanderer-desert goddess cut! Beautifully and simply styled with the braids and gladiator sandals.

I don’t think it’s too short, and I’d rather something be shorter in the front than in the back. Several dresses I’ve tried on lately have a subtle high-low to give more coverage in the back. I am all for that! More mobility and less fear of bending are good qualities in a dress! haha I’ve started wearing dresses that hit an inch or two above the knee, and I never ever used to do that. If I’m paranoid about the length, I’ll wear Jockey’s skimmy shorts underneath in case of any gale force winds. In winter, I’m so thankful for tights because I can wear my short skirts fearlessly!

    • Thank you Liz! I love wintertime for exactly that reason. Tights! I do not know why I feel more comfortable in them with a short skirt, but it is what it is. I do like the subtle hi-lo in dresses lately. I need all of the coverage I can get. I am notoriously clumsy and always dropping things.

      Have a sweet week!

    • Thank you Melodee! I love accessories. They can be so cheap and are a nice way of changing an outfit. I need to figure out a better way of organizing them, though!

      Have happy dreams! : )

  4. I can DEFINITELY see why you love this dress so much! It is so pretty and seems so “YOU.” I love that you waited for a sale – you got such a great deal!

    • Thank you Ashley! I love waiting for sales! You can stretch your dollar so much mor that way.

      Have a great week!

      Jenni

  5. How nice that you got the dress for your birthday! It reminds me of the Matryoshka dolls and the embroidery is beautiful.
I would love to find a longer pretty slip to use for short skirts/dresses. It would be great to find some in many different colors.
    Have fun,
    Stacey

    • Thank you Stacey. It is called Russian Doll Dress, so I definitely think that is the inspiration. I truly love it. It is very fun and easy. I cannot wait to wear it in the wintertime, too.

I hope you are having sweet dreams!

  6. Jenni! I love your dress…It’s so pretty and so you =)

I have a bunch of solid color, elastic waist, cotton, skirts I’ve collected over the years from Anthro…They seem to put out several every year in multiple solid colors!

They are flowy and have pretty crochet or detailed hems and I use those under all of my dresses that are too short for me to feel comfortable in and they add a cute depth and layering feel to the dress 🙂

I always get lots of compliments and people asking where I found a dress with a pretty hem 😉

Its perfect for the dresses that are more on the sheer side as well, like your Free People Voile Trapeze slip! I wear them under my Trapeze slips and then add a denim shirt, vest, sweater, blouse or something else on top and the skirts look cute under that slip always!

Target has some cute solid, cotton peasant skirts that I’ve purchased as well!

Have a wonderful day in your beautiful dress :0) ♥

    • What a fabulous idea! I had done that before, but I forgot about it. I bet my crochet skirt would work. Thank you so much for the great advice! I will definitely be taking it. And the slip idea is fabulous, too!

Thank you for the compliment! : ). I appreciate it!

      Have a fabulous week!

      Jenni

  7. What a gorgeous dress. I don’t think it’s too short. You look spectacular. I love this dress on you.

I have never thought of layering skirts under a short dress. Seems like an obvious solution but I have never considered it.

I think I’d wear this with black or grey tights. Or maybe red if I was feeling brave. I hope you’ll post winter outfits with this dress!

    • Ooooh! I like the idea of grey tights. I have some rust colored ones that might work in leu of red. I would have to be brave for red, too! Thank you for the compliment, too! I did not think the dress was too short until my husband said something. It is so long in the back that I forgot the front is so short.

      Have a beautiful Thursday!

      Jenni

  8. Okay so that dress is amazing! Ah-maz-ing.

For me, I tend to not even look at dresses that are short anymore. I used to put tights or pantyhose underneath them but I find them to be so uncomfortable that I really have trained my eye to disregard anything short.

I am glad you don’t do this. Honestly, you have such beautiful legs you should enjoy the shorter lengths! Don’t cover up them there great gams ya got!

Oh and I totally spy that cheeky gnome!

    • You are so sweet. You are the one with great legs! I wish I could wear jeans like you! I will have to do a post about those gnomes some day. I think they are up to no good! ; )

      Have a delightful Thursday!

      Jenni

  9. I LOVE THIS DRESS too. Only I don’t have one yet. I have been looking at it but not sure what size to get, since I am in Canada and have no brick and mortar store anywhere near me. The reviews online say it runs large, but yours looks so fabulous. So can you tell me, since I think we are a similar size and body type, did you get a small or size down? I am curious.

    • Thank you Jennifer. I am wearing a small. I think the extra small would have been too small in the shoulders. But it is definitely a big dress. My husband is not enthused with it. It is one of my favorites, but it is really big! I am usually always a size small in Free People and that is what I purchased. I like it so much! I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

      Have a gorgeous week!

      Jenni

  10. You look adorable! Like a Matryoshka doll with legs!! (That’s a compliment, I love Russian dolls almost as much as you.) When will you stop being so freaking adorable?! Eh?! I honestly don’t think this is too short on you – at all. And you balance it out so nicely with the gladiators that you’re not exposing too much skin anyway, if that makes sense. I don’t think you need a slip – or if you do, maybe go with a white or navy blue one that ends juust below the hem of the dress?

Anyway, I could never limit myself to wearing a short dress with pants only, so I’d wear a slip. Or see if the hem could be taken down, which I think is what I need to do with “our” bear dress. Sprawling on a piece of cardboard in the park with my friend (we so classy – no blanket, just cardboard from her Asos package) I realised it was riding up just that little bit too much – yikes!

    • Ha! Thank you! I love that you think I am adorable. I did chores all day today in my pajamas, so I feel more yucky than adorable right now. : )

I think I will pair it with a slip. I had ordered one on a popback, but it got cancelled, so I am back to square one. : (

You had me laughing picturing you sitting on a piece of cardboard. That is hilarious. It is ingenious, too, if you ask me. Cardboard as a blanket is a great idea. And an ASOS package has to be awesome. I just styled the bear dress yesterday in some photos. Great minds think alike! That one is short, too. But it is such a standard shift dress, it would be hard to find the proper slip for it.

      Have a happy evening!

      Jenni

  11. I love your birthday dress. It is so pretty! You can pull off short though. I didn’t even notice it, till you mentioned it in your post!
Since you are a Nordstrom Rack goer…do you know if they ever offer coupons or extra percentages off? I tried on a beautiful Free People dress there and I just love it. It was a decent price already, but I was not budgeted it for it. Any ideas, or should I just go and get it?!

    • Thank you Alicia! I have noticed that NR only does sales very seldomly. And if they do it will not be on regular discounted clothes but rather their red tagged items. I have a NR debit card so I earn points on my purchases. They add up. I would get the dress for sure. It might not be there when you go back. The stuff at our NR goes quickly. You just have to be lucky. I hope that helps!

      Have a super Saturday!

      Jenni

  12. yeah, that dress is great. I’d wear crazy orange textured? tights with it. Have you checked out the brand Johnny Was? It seems like they’d be right up your alley.

    • I love the idea of orange textured tights! Especially since I think I have similar ones that might work. Thank you! I love Johnny Was but their clothing is usually too expensive for me. I did buy a dress there at Black Friday last year that I finally took outfit pictures of recently. But I love their style.

      Have a terrific week!

      Jenni

  13. When you love something, you just want to scream about it, right? And then people around you look at you funny and say “uh, okay?” That’s why blogs are great, you can scream about things you love and everyone who reads your blog completely understands. 🙂 This is really cute on you! I feel more comfortable in short skirts with tights on, so I have a few that I only wear in the fall/winter/early spring.

    • That is so true. It is the best part about blogging. Meeting likeminded people who understand that sometimes you just have to scream about a dress because you love it so much. : ). I agree with you. I will enjoy this dress so much more in the fall once I can pair it with tights.

I hope you are having a great weekend!

      Jenni

  14. I really like your dress, how comfy it looks, the flow of it, and the embroidery. I don’t think it looks to short at all. Maybe cream tights in the fall, a blue cardi, and some low ankle boots. Just a thought if you want to wear it in the fall.

    • Thank you Jess! I like your ideas. I had not thought of a cardigan, but I will try it!

      Have a wonderful week!

    • Thank you Marie. I am a sucker for embroidery. I cannot get enough of it. I tracked down a dress I had been waiting for forever to hit sale and it is covered in gorgeous stitching.

I cannot wait to wear it!

      Have an excitingly good week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you! I love how you think of it. It is a different way and I appreciate it. Yes, jut limit where it would be worn. Genius!

      Have a happy week!

      Jenni

  15. So cute! And you’re so funny! This exact same thing happened to me. I was wearing a dress all day and then toward the end of the day, I realized it was riding up pretty high. Yikes. I then decided, it will be adorable with tights in the fall! 😉 ~Tammy

    • Thank you so much! I am with you on the tights for fall. I will definitely be looking forward to that possibility. In fact I was just gathering together my tights today to see what I will need in the fall. : )

      Have a beautiful week!
