THE Room: Summer 2014

I never know what to call this room. Technically it is the Formal Living/Dining Room. But since there is nothing formal about my 1800 square foot house, I try to come up with other alternatives for its name. Let’s see…

The Gnome Room? There are a lot of gnomes hidden throughout this room.

The Music Room? Well, there is the piano that I force my children to play. Hmmmm. They would probably call it “the torture room” or “my mommy is the meanest room”.

We can’t have that.

Let’s move along.

The Art/Antique Room? We do have a lot of antiques in here, including these old industrial spools. And there is a lot of art, but not as much as in other areas of our home. In fact in the Music Room picture, you can see we have just now begun climbing up the arched wall. The kids’ head sculptures will be going up there this week.

The Library?

This would perhaps be closer to the truth, because we do have a ton of books. But I have never seen a library with book shelves that messy. I am sure libraries would disassociate themselves from a room like this.

But it was almost what I called it.

Except.

Well, except when I was putting together this post and looking through the pictures, one theme seemed to stand out. It was rather unexpected. I don’t know what to think about it.

Can you guess what it is?

Yep.

We have a flippin’ Dog Room. What the heck? They’re everywhere. From being there in person to their gigantic mugs on the wall, I think they have claimed this room.

CanIne do anything about it?

Probably not. But it makes me laugh nonetheless.

Do you have a mish/mash room at your home? Do you always wonder what it really is? Have you finally decided on a name? You might be surprised at what the room ruffeals.

  1. I just love your house Jenni! All of the details and things you have collected over the years. It truly shows how much thought you put into it. It is very inviting to me. Who needs anything formal? That does not sound comfortable at all, and I am learning that more and more as we grow as a family!

    • Thank you Heather! We certainly do not need formal. Today has been crazy.m our electricity has gone off in our neighborhood two times for hours. I am on edge worried it is going to happen again. I am about to call the room “The Dark Room”. I appreciate everything you said. Thank you! : )

      Have a great Tuesday!

  2. The details you have in your house are so great! It has inspired me to get my hubby to FINALLY hang some pictures that I have been wanting up for awhile. Maybe if I lay the hammer and nail out he will get the hint?! Or leave it on his dinner plate….or in place of dinner…or something.. BUT, I love all your nooks and crannies and everything just works!

    • Ha! I love it. I have been begging my husband to hang the kids portraits for over a week, so I am no help. I have no advice. ; ). Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it! I still have to do a pile of dishes tonight. That is never fun!

      Sweet dreams!

    • I love that! Great word! Thank you! I need to read more. I keep getting side tracked. I just started sewing a new huge pillow and it has been taking up my last two nights. I am excited about it!

      Have a lovely week!

  3. How about the Happy Room? That’s the first name that came to mind. What a happy room. So inviting. I want to grab one of your books, curl up on your couch with a dog or two, and stare at your artwork all day. Gosh, I just adore all the color.

    • Happy Room! Great name! Thank you! I would love to do that, too. But the dogs are always too hyper. Murphy just wants to climb in my lap and disrupt my book. Thank you for the sweet words! I hope you are staying cool!

      Have a beautiful week!

  4. Oh my gosh the paintings of the dogs are wonderful!

You can really tell you are a collector. Your house is like a museum. So many lovely details.

    bisous

    • Thank you Suzanne! Ollie was painted by my daughter and Murphy was painted by my son. I think they did a great job!

Thank you for the kind words! I maybe collect a little too much. I need to make a trip to donate some stuff.

      Have a terrific Tuesday!

  5. I LOVED this glimpse into your home. I’ve been able to piece together much of what “the room” looks like through outfit pictures, but it was great getting all of these details shots. I can now appreciate the big picture and the little details! My favorite part is all of your artwork, especially the portraits of your family (including your furry children). I’m glad Kyle and I aren’t the only ones with portraits of our dog hanging proudly in our home! I love a house that feels like a curated exhibit of the dwellers’ lives, and yours certainly feels that way. It’s definitely what makes a house a home!

    • Thank you for all of the sweet comments, Liz. I try really hard to make our house a home. Right now it is a super duper messy home because we have been gone for a few days. But I will try to do one more batch of dishes before I go to bed.

      Have a gorgeous Thursday!

  6. Your house is so cozy looking! I love how you utilized a lot of space on the walls for the art. Did your daughter do most of the paintings?
I love your blue curtains and wondered where you found them. Curtains are the hardest thing to shop for. Colors always seem limiting and getting the right measurements can be difficult.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Stacey

    • Thank you Stacey! My daughter and son did most of the paintings. The butterflies are by Ginette Callaway. I love her and if I could ever manage to get good lighting in my hallway, I would love to highlight some more of her art soon. My daughter painted Ollie and my son painted Murphy. The blue curtains are from Zgallerie. They made my green silk ones in my living room, too. They are about seven years old.

      Have a happy week!

  7. Dog room is a good choice! (Love that picture of Ollie licking his nose by the way – too cute!) Canine Parlour if you’re feeling fancy, perhaps? 😉 My friend was telling me that I need to hag a sign on the guestroom door in our new flat that says “Comics Library”, hah! I might just do that.

Anyway, I’ve said it before I know but you have the most beautiful house! What I love about it is that it has personality… a WARM personality. One day I will sit on that lovely sofa covered by a living blanket of grunting dogs, and that will be awesome! 🙂 Even if Ollie farts in my face!

    • Arg! I accidentally put your comment in spam instead of replying. I think that is a sign I need to get to bed. I love Canine Parlour. It is brilliant. I never would have thought of it. And you should totally do that with your room! That would be awesome!

One day I would love for you to sit on my couch and do all of those things. I will, of course, make yo a drink, too. ; ). Then you will not realize exactly what you got yourself into with those Ollie farts.

      Have a fun weekend!

      Jenni

  8. Your dogs are the cutest! We have 3 dogs and a very tiny house, so I think our whole house is a ‘dog house’! I love getting a glimpse of your space. It looks lovely:)

    • Three dogs! You are living our dream! We would love to have three dogs. We have a home owner’s association and we are allowed to have three pets, but they cannot all be the same type. So, you can have two cats and one dog, but not three cats. Isn’t that the craziest rule?!

And thank you for the compliment! : )

      Have a fun day!

      Jenni
