Grungy Summer

I’m old enough to remember flannel being popular and then fading away. Now it is back. I usually associate it with winter.

But this lightweight dress was such a steal at our local Nordstrom Rack for $30, regularly $148 (slightly similar dress here). I knew I could wear it in the summer and it would also carry over nicely into the winter. I cannot wait to pair this with some denim. The dress just screams for it.

We found the coolest spot for pictures.

I had forgotten to bring my gnome I want to have in at least one picture in each of my outfit posts. And we were far from gnome.

So, I drew one.

His name is Max. The ants seemed to like their new friend.

Do you remember the grunge look? I was never into it. Still am not. But this dress has such a feminine spirit, I appreciate its roots.

Do you have a love affair with flannel?

Me, too.

Shhhhh. Don’t tell Max.

  1. What a great find. I love the flannel look but the lightness of the dress. It looks great with your sandals, but will transition well into fall and winter.
I have also loved a good flannel, especially in the fall. It just seems so cozy to me. Have a great week!

    • Thank you Alicia. I do think it will be a good dress for all seasons. Maybe not spring. But I cannot wait to restyle it for the fall. I feel like such a dork when I do these pictures, so thank you so much for commenting! : )

I hope you are having a lovely day!

  2. I like how this flannel is sheer. Definitely wearable year round. The back is nice too.

Pretty photos. I love how you are taking photos in different settings.

    • Thank you Liana. I am now running out of places to take them, though! I need new scenery. Or to be out amongst the people. Which is terrifying!

      Have a super week!

  3. unfortunately, yes, i too am old enough to remember the grunge era. i was more than a little obsessed with my so called life. i wanted to be angela so badly, i even colored my hair red when i was thirteen (without my parent’s permission). i should’ve just gone with the flannel and docs.

    • I loved “My So Called Life.” I used to like Claire Danes, too. Oh, man, to be young again!

      Have a great week!

  4. Love that dress! Reminds me of Scotland 🙂 The tartan plaid is my fave. And that spot you found is really awesome and perfect for pictures!!

    • Thank you Katie! We just went back there recently for more photos. Now I need a new spot! : )

      Have a lovely week!

  5. Hey Jenni! I LOVE your dress (and sandals, of course!!) but I’ve always loved flannel! Can you tell me if your dress is Free People? I’d love to find one, I wear so much flannel in the Fall and Winter time =) Hope you and your family had a wonderful 4th of July! :0) ♥

    • Thank you so much. It is Free People. I can’t believe I didn’t write that. I will search my house to see if I can find the tag. At Nordstrom Rack, they can search for things based on the tag. I had it with the others, but I just checked and it is not there. Now I have to hope I didn’t throw it away. If I find it I will email you, if not, I am sorry I am so messy!

We did have a great 4th, thank you! : ). I hope yours was great!

      Have a beautiful week!

  6. What a great score! I love plaid, likely due to my Scottish roots, but I think Kyle wears enough of it for the both of us. I am hoping to find a lovely plaid skirt or family plaid scarf on our trip to Scotland in the fall, though! I think this dress is so great because, like you said, you’ll be able to wear it year round. It looks so casual and free-spirited here, but you could really glam it up for winter! I’d wear it with a black velvet belt, tights, and a glitzy statement necklace. It would totally change the look of the dress! I’m so excited to see how else you style this one!

    • Aaahhhh! Ahhhh! Lucky girl! You are going to Scotland in the fall!!! I am so excited for you! I can picture you glamming up plaid in the most perfect way. You must get some. Scotland is my favorite romance setting in books. My favorite being, “Saving Grace” by Julie Garwood. It is so good!

Than, you for the compliment, too!

      Have a terrific Thursday!

  7. I never got into the grunge look. Fashion felt nonexistent and frustrating for me from about 1989-1995. Now that fashion from that era is coming back I dislike it even more. That said, your flannel dress is really pretty. So light and such a pretty red! Gosh, the scenery is amazing. Love the desert feel with your shoes! Perfect!

    • My daughter is lovin’ that whole look. It is so weird to see her and the kids wearing things that were trendy when I was her age. I do love the babydoll dresses. But those have always come and gone in the style world.

Thanks for the compliments! I love that place for photos. But I have gone there again and I hope it is not going to be boring.

      Have a jubilant Thursday!

  8. OOO I love a good find! This dress is really cool. I too associate plaid with f/w, however, there’s something so cozy about it and makes me so happy to see even in the summer!

    • Thank you Madaline! It was a fun find. I was really lucky. I do not know how or why it got so discounted. It was cool to find a flannel piece I could wear in the summer, too.

      Have a beautiful week!

  9. Yes, I remember but was never really into it. Unless some hot guy was sporting it,and even then I sort of wanted to give him a good bath and scrubbing. But this dress is too cute to really get that label! Lovely pictures.

    • Ha! I love it. I remember a particular hot guy I felt that way about. Ahhhh. Memories. It is so funny, because that is how I still picture that guy but it has been almost twenty years, so I know he would not look at all like that. Memories are funny.

Thank you for the sweet words! : )

      Have a great week!

  10. This… is the most awesome Jenni outfit I have seen in… I dunno! It’s awesome, and so YOU! The kooky but still elegant flannel dress with those sandals – it just WORKS! I hope we get to see you style that dress in other ways too – for instance, hello perfect Christmas dress, am I right?! But it could also look really rocker chic with a leather jacket and some tall boots – or ankle boots, even. Love your sand gnome too – such a cute little detail, that! 🙂

    • Oooooh, it would be cool for Christmas. I had not thought of it as rocker chic. That would be cool, although I cannot imagine me pulling that off. Thanks for the compliments! I appreciate them so much, especially today. I am feeling, ugh.

      Have a marvelous Monday!

      Jenni
