Mexican Blanket Skirt

I love the creativity and color that symbolizes Mexico in my soul. There is so much to inspire: The Talavera, the Otomi embroidery, the Huichol beadwork, handblown glass, beautiful silver jewelry, intricate leather purses, embroidered dresses and woven blankets. I love it all.

We have Talavera tile all over our house. Even in our pool. I layer with Otomi blankets on couches and beds in our house. Each time we visit Mexico, I never ever leave enough room in my suitcase. I want to bring it all home. The lively spirit of Mexico has my heart in its grasp.

So, when I saw this vintage Mexican Blanket Skirt (similar not vintage item from Modcloth here and vintage item here and here and here) being sold from Effina Vintage, I knew my pocketbook did not stand a chance. Especially since it was exactly my size. And also, the seller was selling it very reasonably and her commentary on her items is fun.

I paired the skirt with my Anthropologie Cloth and Stone Denim Daydrifter Tee from last year (similar tee here) and my Anthropologie Almanac Sandals.

The necklaces are Free People’s Coin Necklace (given to me as a participant of Free People Me. Similar here) and Simply Livly’s Turquoise Necklace.

The Mexican Blanket was brought back from one of our trips. I thought it would be a fun prop with the skirt. I did not carry this blanket to Costco with me later in the day. Although, with all of the samples they give away, wouldn’t it be funny if I plopped this blanket down in the middle of the store and had myself a free little picnic?

That wouldn’t anger anyone.

Speaking of free samples, did you know that Trader Joe’s gives out free wine samples?!?! I also learned that on this day when I ran in there for Peonies. And walked out with Peonies and wine. Well played, Trader Joe’s! But next time, I’m bringin’ my blanket. You won’t even see me comin’.

The bracelet is Free People’s Hammered Stacked Multi Cuff

If my spirit was a skirt, this would be it. Wearing this skirt makes me feel more like “me.” Does that make sense?

What piece of clothing would your spirit inhabit? Do you own it? Do you feel more like yourself when you are wearing it? Do you think I would be able to finish my free samples of wine before I was asked to leave the store with my blanket? A curious girl would like to know.

    • Thanks Sarah! I will go check it out right now! : ). I bet it is cute. You have great taste!

  1. What a great skirt! I love how you styled it, and i am sure there are tons of other options.
I have a beautiful blue mexican blanket that my great grandmother got for me from Mexico. They would winter in Texas, and head into Mexico before coming home and bring all sorts of treats to us. I use it as a picnic/beach blanket!

    Have a great weekend!

    • Thank you Alicia. I bet the blanket has held up well. I wash and dry mine all of the time. I use mine for picnics, too! Although, I purchased two pillows from Target and they were in the back of my car. When I saw them together, I want to try to pair them in my house together soon. So, I will have to switch something else out.

You have a great weekend, too! : )

    • You are so sweet! I do like that vest alot. I bought a vest almost exactly like that one from a consignment shop a few months ago otherwise I would have pounced on that lovely piece. Thank you so much for going to the trouble. I really appreciate it.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Beautiful photos. I think the first one especially could be a catalogue shot.

I know what you mean about feeling like your spirit inhabits a piece of clothing. I don’t think I’ve found my spirit clothing yet though.

    • Thank you so much Liana. Mu husband wanted me to crop that one but I liked the distance of it. He takes good pictures. I am a horrible photographer!

Oh my gosh! That outfit the other day that you wore was so awesome! It had to have some of your fun adventurous spirit in there! : )

      Have a cheerful weekend!

    • I agree. Well, in anything I have in my closet. The things I have that I do not feel that way anymore I am getting rid of. I find I change as the years go on.

Have fun in California this weekend! : )

    • Thank you Ashley. I appreciate that. It does make me happy. I plan on wearing it with a white tee next!

      Have a happy weekend!

  4. You look beautiful! And you are wearing three accessories. It complements your outfit very nicely. Have a Happy Memorial Day Weekend.

    • Thank you so much! I know! Three accessories! It felt weird but fun! I went to do it again today, but sadly I have to be in that adventurous mood. So, I only wore one today.

Thank you again! Have a sweet weekend with lots of bullie love!

    • Thank you Brynne! We’re trying. But this week I have not gotten any pictures at all. It has been so crazy here. It has been the lowest priority. Thankfully I have enough outfit pics for a few weeks.

      Have a lovely weekend! : )

    • Thank you Melodee! We are lucky to live in such a pretty area. Although weekends are a nightmare with crowds. We are definitely going nowhere all weekend!

I hope you have a fun weekend!

  5. Okay so that skirt is amazing! The waist on it is superb! Love how you styled it. Gosh, Jenni, it looks like it was made just for you!
My spirit skirt is a blue and red chevron striped ’70’s looking skirt that I got from Anthro 14 years ago. I think I blogged about it once. I feel most like me in it.
I swear I am at Trader Joe’s every 3 days and I have never seen them give out wine samples. Maybe they hide them when they see me coming? 😉

    • Thanks Cynthia! I think I remember that skirt. You need to blog about it again. I would love to see it.

So, in our Trader Joe’s, there is a wine aisle. Then next to the wine aisle is a little blocked off section. In the section is more wine. I never really paid attention to it before. But it has a sign that says no one under age 21 or something like that. I must have snuck in. ; ). And in that section is a counter and behind the counter, there is a person who will pour you samples. I am curious if your Trader Joe’s has this or if it was made because of how much wine a single person, ahem, was buying at that store.

      Have a great long weekend!

  6. Your pictures are gorgeous, Jenni! I have been out of town without internet access and am catching up on your posts now! That is the loveliest skirt. ever! I love Mexican inspired pieces like you do…My closet is full of them and my place is decorated with lots of blankets, baskets, embroidery, and other similar pieces 🙂 I know what you mean about wearing what feels like “you”…Probably why I love flowy, bright clothes so much!! If you ever decide to sell any of your clothes, I hope you let us know 😉 But don’t ever sell this skirt!!! Thanks again for the sneak peak last week! Hope you and your family are having a healthy, safe, and wonderful Memorial Day weekend :0) ♥

    • Thank you! I will definitely be hanging on to this skirt. It makes me so happy. I hope you had fun out of town. I love bright flowy clothes. I am excited each week to sift through my closet to decide what to wear. Tomorrow I am wearing a Forever 21 piece that is a red babydoll with a seafoam slip. The dress has big flowers and long see through sleeves. It is really good for the price. I hope to get pictures of it tomorrow.

      Have a happy week! : )

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much Deniz. They were fun to take. But it was so hot! I am hoping to have better luck tomorrow.

Thank you again! Have a gorgeous week!

      Jenni

  7. That is the most amazing skirt!! I’d never heard of a ‘blanket skirt’, but it makes perfect sense. I bet it’s comfy. And warm? It doesn’t look like you need help warming up where you are!! Hope you’re having a great week. P x

    • Thank you. It is a bit warm. So, it probably will not be a summer skirt. Maybe a summer evening skirt. This week will probably be one of the last times I can wear it. It is nice and breezy here.

Thank you again! You have a great week, too!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much! : ). I cannot wait to wear it again. I am contemplating taking it with me on our beach vacation. I think it would be great if the weather is nice enough.

Thank you again! Have a beautiful week!

      Jenni

  8. Jenni, these look like catalog shots! Now you’re inspiring me to step up my photo backdrop game! I also loved that you shared some of your Mexico memories and favorite artisan pieces. I’m really interested in Scandinavian culture, but never having been, most of my pieces are heirlooms from my Swedish great-grandmother and cookbooks passed down through the generations. I would love to travel there and go to the local markets and galleries to bring something special home with me.

As for a piece that captures my spirit? Maybe the Emeline Tulle Skirt. Maybe my multi-colored pink pearl and diamond necklace. Maybe these sequin, beaded, and fringed pink cowgirl boots I had as a little girl. Or the pink tutu and white tissue paper flower headband dipped in silver glitter that I wore to my kindergarten graduation celebration. I’m on the hunt for more mature, contemporary versions of these that I could wear in public without looking like I escaped the local asylum.

    • Thank you so much Liz. I have been feeling inspired lately to get out of the house. I am a homebody so that is a tough one. My husband is good at where to direct me as far as where the sun is in the sky. I want him to take my kids with me to get some family shots but neither one of my kids have been up to going with us yet. And, of course, I would not post the kids’ pictures anyways. But I would like to have them. I love your outfit pictures. Like the ones you took in the garden. So pretty. I want a crown exactly like the one you described. If you ever find one, please let me know. We could be soul sisters! : ).

      Have an enchanting day!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much! I am glad you like it. It was a fun buy. I bought my Mexican blanket for $15 on the beach in Mexico. It was such a good deal!

      Have a lovely week!

      Jenni

  9. OK, absolutely LOVE this skirt. I visited Mexico for the first time this year and I am completely entranced. The beauty and all the colors… it is perfect. I’m now adding a mexican inspired skirt to my list of closet necessities. 🙂

    • Thank you Katie! Oh! I definitely hope you find your skirt! Please let me know if you ever do! That would be awesome! : )

      Have a great week!
