It’s The Little Things: Bracelets

20140514-180114.jpg

I started this blog while I was still discovering my personal style. And I still am discovering it. I think self discovery is always an on-going cycle. With that said, I used to not like to wear more than one accessory. And sometimes that is still true.

But lately I have wanted to layer more and more.

The less clothes I get to layer as the weather warms up means the more accessories that get to take their place.

I bought my first bracelet last year.

It was so exciting.

I have since added a few more:

This Free People Hammered Stacked Multi Cuff was a recent acquisition as I try to push myself past my comfort zone.

My husband thinks it looks like shower curtain rings.

When is he going to learn that when he compares something to something else weird or funny, that just makes me like it even more?

Forever 21 has a very similar version in gold. I really like that one, too.

I wore these Forever 21 Globetrotter Cuffs yesterday. They are my absolute favorites. They are also less than $5 each. I love them so much, I hope they last.

The turquoise layered bracelet was one of five that I purchased last year for $4 each. They are sold out, but Forever 21 has some fun colored bangles in a similar color vein here. And I saw almost identical ones at Target yesterday.

I own two of the Anthropologie Scalloped Monogram Bracelets. One with my husband’s initial and one with my own. I think these are feminine and sweet. I like the little details on them.

One weird fact (of many… Too… Too… Many) about me is that I love octopuses. I think they are brilliant creatures that we still have not studied enough. So, when I saw Modcloth’s My Pet Octopus Cuff, I knew it was being added to my collection. This bracelet is fun, but I will say that I have small wrists and this moves around a lot. I think this would fit better on a girl with larger wrists.

I purchased this yellow wrap bee bracelet two weeks ago at Nordstrom Rack for $10. I could not find a link for a similar bracelet (or rather, I could not find a link to a similar bracelet at a reasonable price. I am not going to link to a bracelet that costs more than most dresses). The brand is Dazzle. Each bug had a different color. There was a pretty kelly green one, too, but my heart belongs to the bee. Ever since my grandmother passed away, I feel more drawn to my heritage as a daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter of many generations of beekeepers. So when I see a piece of jewelry with a bee or bees on it, I pounce.

It’s The Little Things: A small accessory to bring a little more fun to an outfit. And a little more joy to my heart.

Have you gotten into the bracelet love this season? Do you layer them? Do you have weird jewelry rules like me (you will never see me wearing a necklace and earrings. It has to be one or the other)?

P.S. Speaking of bracelets, Heather from the shop, Peacock Fairy, has some pretty bracelets, too. She is giving away a beautiful necklace.. It ends tonight at 9:00 p.m. PST. Please do not forget to enter. Thank you!

  1. I love american Indian cuff bracelets. I did start to collect them though they are a little expensive.Like you I wasnt one for jewelry though I have found this year that it has become a focus above buying clothes.

    • Oh no! The American Indian Cuffs are gorgeous! I am on a shoestring budget this month. But I will be keeping those in mind for the future! I have been the same way lately. I would rather buy accessories than clothes. And the accessories have been so good lately. I have been pleasantly surprised with the variety and quality of Forever 21’s pieces this month. I am loving that they are doing more bohemian things! I scooped up the prettiest peach kimono for less than $20 last week.

      Have a creative Friday!

  2. Love them all Jenni! I tend to only wear necklaces – I need to wear bracelet (and earrings) more. I am with you on the only one accessory thing. I just love that skirt (or dress) in your first photo! Do you have info on it?

    • Thank you Heather! It is fun to put on more pieces. But I want to make sure it looks simple even with layering rather than busy. That is tricky. The skirt in the photo is a resent acquisition. It is a vintage Mexican blanket skirt. The love I feel for this skirt is unparalleled. I found mine on Etsy. I will be doing a post on it soon, but I found some more very slightly similar vintage ones on Etsy by typing in “vintage Mexican skirt” and “vintage Mexican blanket skirt.” I hope that helps.

Have a gorgeous rest of the week!

    • Ha! Sorry! If it helps there should not be any temptations for two days as tomorrow is a silly story and Saturday is an outfit post with pieces all ready shown here. The bee bracelet is a sweet piece for $10. I do hope you find one. : ). See, I’m an enabler, too!

      Have a happy Friday!

  3. So I love the octopus and bee bracelets. Perfectly whimsical. I used to wear bracelets all the time in college. I received a monogrammed charm bracelet for high school graduation, and I wore it every day along with a silver charm necklace Kyle bought me that had a heart and a “K” on it. It was probably for our 6 month anniversary or something. Because I was high maintenance even at 17. It’s only been the past few years that I’ve really gotten into accessories, specifically statement earrings and necklaces. I love how much accessories can change the feel of an outfit, but like clothes, I find myself wearing the same ones again and again. Maybe I should do a jewelry clean-out alongside the closet clean-out I’m in the midst of…

    • Thanks Liz. I, too, am in the middle of a closet clean out. It must be the weather. I just want to simplify. That is sweet that Kyle bought you that. I am so high maintenance with everything else but surprisingly not with jewelry. Well, except for my silly rules. But that just doesn’t count. Right?! ; )

      Have a happy day!

    • Thank you Liana! Last time I was at my dads I got some pictures of around the barn and the hives. I just have to get around to writing the post. That’s the tough part. I want to do all of the memories in my head justice. Although, it will probably open up more than one post full of content. I actually am inspired to do that. Thank you! I have been feeling uninspired all week. Can’t wait to get started tomorrow!

      Have a fabulous Friday!

  4. Hi Jenni, I have gone from beaded bracelets to cuffs or layering smaller bracelets. If I wear a necklace, I tend to wear small earrings, like gold or silver hoops or just studs with a statement necklace. But if I do big earrings, I don’t wear a necklace. Cocktail rings are fun too, but I have small hands. Jewelry sure is fun!

    • Thank you for sharing. I am trying them all. It is fun. You are right. I have small hands, too, and it is so hard to find rings. There are so many vintage ones I have seen that I have to pass up. I wear a 4.25 and I bought one of those wooden rings off of Anthropologie when they hit sale. It is my first ring besides my wedding rings that I have ever owned! It is so much fun. I have had a blast wearing it. For some reason that big ring makes me feel braver.

Jewelry is fun! You are absolutely right.

      Have a terrific Friday! : )

      Jenni

    • Thank you Melodee. I think that is one of the reasons I like them. I cannot get over the price. For such a small thing that makes me so happy, I can buy one for the price of a coffee. Love that!

Have a cheerful and easy Friday!

  5. Husbands are so funny! I recently purchased the “merci” bracelet from Anthro when it went on sale. I love it but I have only worn it a couple of times. I always feel like bracelets are going to fall off. Silly, I know! I do not like wearing earrings. I have been wishing the holes in my ears would close up but after 25 years they have not. Necklaces I like! Oh – and I am terrible. I rarely rare my wedding rings. I hope I am not going to get kicked out of the girl club for all of this!! xo

    • Oh! I remember you liking that bracelet. Don’t you love it more now that you waited and scored it on sale. I always like my sale finds more. But I imagine that Marcy is going to try to steal it!

I like the look of fewer pieces rather than a ton of everything. I’m right there with ya girl. I have gotten used to the bracelets. I used to hate the feel of them on my wrist.

Hope you are having a brilliant weekend!

      Jenni

  6. I wore a lot of bracelets last year, but since having Macy all of my jewelry has been abandoned! I pretty much only wear stud earrings..since she grabs at everything! I miss my statement necklaces and earrings! I love Forever 21 for their fun, inexpensive jewelry. I get more compliments on my forever 21 stuff than anything else I wear.
I love the octopus bracelet. It is SO fun. Did you see the octopus tank at Anthro? I wishlisted it for the pure fact that my boys would LOVE it if I wore it…and it is really cute:)

    • I totally forgot about no jewelry with a baby. I definitely went through that stage. I agree. Forever 21 makes such cool pieces for so cheap. I also got a gold hammered cuff there for a little over $5 and it looks almost exactly like pieces 10-20X more expensive at other stores. I would be so scared of losing it if I had paid that much. But for $5, I don’t need to worry about it.

I did see the octopus tank. I need to add it to my wishlist. Because I do not wear sleeveless, it would be one of those pieces I would have to wait for a 75-80% off moment because I would have to layer it. The pattern is so fun! I hope you get it. Plus, I think the color would be amazing on you!

Hope you are having an easy and fun weekend!

  7. Great bracelets! I think I own less bracelets bc they bug me when they move around a lot. I like the look & idea of them, but I usually end up taking them off. I totally understand your jewelry rules, no necklace & earrings. I almost always wear small earrings, so I do wear them w/ necklaces most of the time. Again, I love the look of big earrings & love them on there’s, but not so much me. I always feel like they look too big & completely ridiculous on me, like clown shoes! So, if I find a pair of super light weight, (bc that’s another thing, I can’t wear earrings if they are heavy at all) & pretty, kind of big earrings I’ll try them, but the whole time I wear them I feel like people are staring thinking how crazy, big, horrible they look. Like clown shoes! Maybe someday I’ll feel more comfortable in big earrings & bracelets. I guess I have to keep trying!

Also, thanks for your sweet comments the other day about my dad & your complement that I looked pretty. Large sunglasses are amazing! No makeup, a big hat, large sunglasses out at a game in the hot sun, I think that’s pretty much my signature look forever out here in the desert!

    🙂 hav a fab weekend!
    Rebecca

    • Thanks Rebecca! I bet you would look pretty in big earrings. Here in my neck of the woods, everyone wears big jewelry, so if they are looking I imagine they are pondering if they all ready own that piece. I think you should definitely try again. Wear your big sunglasses and rock it!

Medical situations are so hard. I am going through a little something of our own over here. Tough situation to be in. I hope he is feeling better!

      Have a splendid weekend!

      Jenni

  8. I love jewelry, but I have no bracelets. I love the look on them you and other people, but I just don’t wear them myself.

I don’t think a love of octopuses (octopi?) is weird! I really liked Paul the Octopus who picked the winners of the 2010 World Cup. Do you have the Anthro Marine Mural Dress from a couple of years ago? I call it my “Paul” dress. 🙂

    • Thanks Rachel! I used to not like bracelets but now I do. I need to try to find that dress. It is so cute! Octopi and octopuses are both correct plurals. It seems that octopuses is more correct but you can use either or. The only reason I know this is because I had written “octopi” first but then looked it up and changed it after researching the plural definition explanation. Both plural words sound odd. : )

Anyway, the octopus is an awesome creature. I do not follow the World Cup so I had no idea about Paul. But that is so cool that you have that dress. I cannot wait to see you wear it after it warms up for you. Fingers crossed that is soon!

      Have a super Sunday!

      Jenni

  9. I love bracelets and Octopuses too. I love that ModCloth Octopus and remember seeing it on their website. I find it so interesting that something can be on an official website but as soon as it shows up on someone’s blog, it looks better. Maybe it’s because we are seeing it in the real world and it has a fresh new take on it.
One of my favorite exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium is the Octopuses. As far as fashion goes, I have an Octopus ring and pin from Kenneth Jay Lane that I love. They may have some pieces left over at QVC, so it is worth a try. I’m sure you saw the ModCloth necklace too. I have that one wish listed and Anthro has an Octopus tee.
By the way, I’m going to have to check and see if Octopuses is the proper plural.
    Have a great evening,
    Stacey
