It’s The Little Things: Paper Straws

Folks. I have a problem. We can joke about. Pretend it is a silly thing. A small thing.

But it is getting a bit out of hand.

It is kind of my habit or need, if you will, to have a supply of every possible thing. Imaginable. Just in case. You never know.

“Just in case. You never know.” That is the mantra of my life, by the way. In one word it can be summed up to: greed paranoia.

I have always been a Straw Freak. I bet you didn’t know there was such a thing. Well there is. Here I am. “Nice to meet you.” I cannot drink out of a glass without a straw. I make weird slurping noises. It is like I have been drinking out of puddles all of my life. My lips cannot form properly onto the glass.

I am sure at this point you are crossing off the word “straw” in Straw Freak.

I don’t blame you.

Also. I cannot drink water with a straw. Or milk (unless the milk is from a donut shop in a small container purchased on the way to the airport between the hours of five and seven thirty in the morning. Jealous of my husband now?). It is simply not done. Sends shivers down my spine, it does.

If I am at a restaurant, I always grab extra ones. Especially at Coffee Bean And Tea Leaf. Their straws are the absolute best. They are big. They are purple. They live in my purse where I can stroke them daily.

Shhhhhh!

So, I started seeing these gorgeous paper straws popping up all over the place. And the Need Beast in my heart grew.

I finally caved and purchased some hot pink paper straws from Amazon.
.

But the Need Beast was not satisfied.

So I bought a small pack of twenty yellow polkadot and stripe ones.

But he longed for more.

He wanted. All. Of. The. Colors.

RRRROOOOOAAAARRRRR!

20140507-124715.jpg

But I did not want to pay for them. Well, the other day Anthropologie had free shipping on anything. That’s right. Anything. Do you want to know what I bought?

Clothes?

Nope.

Shoes?

Nope.

Jewelry?

Nope.

Shocker: I bought straws.

Eight boxes of fabulous clearanced paper straws. Eight boxes of 144 count straws (seriously, the best price I have found is on Anthropologie. Who knew?). This, combined with my previous Amazon purchases, left me with a total of 1,196 straws.

My husband was very impressed with this number, folks.

You should have seen his jaw clench.

I think it was in anticipation of the fun sipping he will be doing all season.

Don’t you?

I am so ready for this summer. For margaritas by the pool. For lemonade. And piña coladas.

All made more exciting with the use of colorful, happy straws.

It’s the little things: Making a drink even better.

Do you have paper straws in your house? Do you drink from a straw? Do you have weird rules about straws? Please share. My Need Beast really wants to know.

* The Amazon link is an affiliate link. The straws for this link are $1 more than what Anthropologie is selling their straws for. However, I provided the link in case Anthropologie runs out. Also, I get free shipping on Amazon but not on Anthropologie. Purchasing through the Amazon link will result in a small commission for The Need Beast this blog.

  1. I do have paper straws in the house! Pink & white striped ones I found at Michaels in the $1 section 1/2 off! I bought all that was there, only 4 packages, for my daughter’s birthday party. We also have normal plastic bendy straws, but mostly save them for smoothies we have several times a week. I have to say I don ‘t like the paper straws!! Maybe I don’t drink fast enough. I did find bendy straws in pretty colors at Ikea while on a trip to Colorado. Thatnk goodness our Ikea will be opening in a few months!!

    • $1!!! What a score! I love the Ikea ones, too. I have only purchased those once and I had forgotten about. Thanks for the reminder! I will have to get some next time I am there. I only get to Ikea once a year. I wish we had one closer. You are so lucky to be getting one near you! I am starting smoothies this week, too for the kids. I have to look for some good recipes with hidden vegetables.

      Have a fabulous Friday! : )

  2. Jenni, I have two boxes of plastic straws. (I prefer plastic too.) I accidentally bought the second one because I forgot I had one and didn’t want to run out. I also have two small packages of paper straws because I want to make a paper straw wreath. Do not,I repeat DO NOT google paper source straw crafts. Do you see the becauses in those sentences? You have found your people.

P.S. If you do google that, you will find the straws you just bought also come in green. I did warn you…..

P.P.S. 1200 straws ….I included the ones you said you had in your purse ……will only last your family of four a year if not everyone uses one a day.

    • Aaaaahhhh! Paper straw crafts?!?! Who knew? I do not have nearly enough straws. Oh my gosh. A paper straw wreath is exactly what I need. And the straws come in green?! And now I know they come in orange, too. They won’t last a year?! Oh my gosh. The Need Beast must have more!

Thanks for all of the info! I cannot wait to do a craft!

      Have a sweet Friday!

  3. I had no idea that there were paper straws. Although that makes sense, since we’ve only had plastic for 50 years or so.

Plus I assume they’re better for the environment!

    • Thanks Liana. I do definitely think they are better for the environment. I just like how pretty they look. Although, I am saving them. I used my plastic straws today.

      Have a relaxing weekend!

  4. wow, didn’t realize there was such a serious epidemic like this out there 😉 i don’t own any paper straws, although, i think i’m in need of some pretty floral ones – just because 🙂

    • Oh my gosh! Do they come in floral?! I am scared to check. That would be amazing! I would want those, too. : )

      Have sweet dreams!

  5. I love straws! Unfortunately though, I stopped using them completely when my derm told me drinking from them repeatedly causes some major wrinkles. Boo!

    • Aaaahhhh! Wrinkles?! I am going to pretend I don’t know that. Although it does make sense. Gotta think about that one. I can’t give up my straw habit!

Have a beautiful Friday! Thank you for commenting.

  6. Funny. I only bought 2 packages of straws during the free ship day! It was the only thing I bough! I got the pink dot ones and the grey stripes. I thought they would be fun for Macy’s 1st bday party…even though I have no idea what theme I am doing!
I am glad you are prepared for whatever drinks and weather may come… it is always good to be prepared!

    • Ha! That is so funny. Great minds think alike. They will be fun for Macy’s birthday party. Your sons will love them. I bet they use the grey ones as swords. That is what my son would do.

It is always good to be prepared! Thank you!

      Have a super fun Friday!

      Jenni

    • Thanks Deniz. They definitely came with the mason jar phase. I like the look of the mason jars, too. They are so cool looking.

Have an easy breezy Friday! : )

  7. that’s a great deal from anthro! I had to zoom in on the quanitity!! 144!!! yikes! I love your revelations…I don’t think it’s weird at all….I was like, dang I can’t wait to read this post about paper straws (which I also happen to love and I have been hoarding them!!)….so fun!

    • Thanks Melodee! Oh good! I am glad to not be the only hoarder of straws. The great thing is they all store neatly, perfectly into one box. When does that ever happen?

      Have an enchanting Friday!

      Jenni

  8. These straws would be nice, as opposed to washing reusable straws as I am currently doing. It is not fun to try to wash a straw, especially if it’s not washed right away! But on a more fun note, your post from yesterday inspired me to see if I could find any local vintage shops, and I did. I ended up picking up this little number to wear for my anniversary this weekend, from a shop very close to me!

    • Oh my gosh. Washing straws would be so hard. Definitely, paper straws will be less work. I hope you can find some to try out.

I love that hat so much. That color is so good. The hot pink. What are you going to wear with it? Please share. I want to picture it in my head. I bet it will look lovely!

      Happy early Anniversary!

      Have a fun Friday!

      Jenni

      • Thanks Jenni! I hope I can find something to wear with the hat ( I tend to build outfits around one item, rather than just seeing what works together). I had planned on wearing a Byron Lars dress, either lace study or carissima sheath, but I do not know if they work with the hat. Or I also have 50s style dresses/skirts or tulle skirts that I could wear. I will have to see which one it looks best….

      • I don’t think anyone can go wrong with Byron Lars. Gosh, I love that designer. I think the way he creates silhouettes to enhance a woman’s figure is amazing. I love the carissima sheath. I am hoping to snag it someday . Please let me know what you end up picking. And what you did. If you want. I would love to hear it. If you don’t want to post it here, you can always email me, too! : )

I am so excited for your fun celebration. Anytime I can go to dinner or even out of the house is fun for me!

        Have fun!

        Jenni

  9. I did not know that Anthropologie sold straws. All of them are super cute. I never thought much about straws. Now I kind of want some polka dot straws!!

    • I have less polka dot straws than stripe ones. But I do like them so much. They just make me happy to look at them. And I need all of the happiness I can get this week! : )

      Have a gorgeous Friday!

      Jenni

  10. LOL…I don’t think I’m as into straws as you are, but I’m really glad that you1,196 of something that you love. 🙂 Also, I think your husband was just jealous that you didn’t get any in manly colors…:)

    • Oh my gosh! I did get grey ones just for him. He actually likes the red ones better. And I actually think I like the grey ones (I think they will look the best with lemonade). Funny how that works out! : )

      Have a delightful Friday!

      Jenni

    • I agree with you. They are expensive. I know I can get the same amount in the plastic version on sale for $1. So, the paper version (on sale) being $4 is a lot of money. But then I compare it to buying a soda or coffee at a restaurant or drinking a soda or coffee at home. At least these will last longer than the soda for the price difference. I hope your husband likes them. We all like them here. They just make drinks prettier and more fun! I won’t use them everyday because of the cost. But once a week as a splurge is good.

Enjoy your pretty straws! Thanks for commenting. I like to know I am not alone in my drinking splurges! ; )

      Have a Happy Mother’s Day!

      Jenni

  11. I am also a straw freak – I have to use a straw for everything except OJ. I was always afraid to buy paper straws as I keep a glass of water all day – keep refilling it, Do the paper straws start to disintegrate after awhile?

    • I never thought about it. I bet the straw would get soggy if it was used all day. I don’t think it would hold up. I will try it this summer and get back to you. It will be a cool little experiment.

      Have a happy week! : )

      Jenni
