Antique Shopping With My Mom

My mom wanted to have a girl’s day a few weeks ago. I was in. Since we both love antiquing, we planned on heading down to some local antique stores and picking out a fun restaurant to eat at.

It was a fun day, but incredibly hot. I wore my Free People Tutti Frutti Slip Skirt that I got for a steal at Nordstrom Rack (similar skirt here) with a white t-shirt, bow belt from Anthropologie and On A Wing Necklace with vintage boots. It seemed like a good outfit for antiquing. Sorry for the blurry pictures. My daughter took them and the camera is big for her tiny hands.

I wanted to share all of the pretty vintage treasures there were to be had. I did not buy anything except for a few post cards to add to my collection. You can see a new feature about them that I started on this blog here.

Vintage Maracas. The color is beautiful.

This bracelet that reminded me of peacock feathers (Heather!).

20140421-222019.jpg

I can always spot a gnome.

20140421-222100.jpg

This guy lurking creepily in the back was tagged as an elf. The horror! But, well, he is creepy enough for the title. He was $150. Now that may seem like a lot of money. And it is. But imagine the possibilities. How scared would your spouse/partner be of this creature?

Oh. Man. What a steal!

If only I weren’t so scared of it myself…

Here was a cute ceramic gnome candle holder. I don’t buy the kitschy ceramic stuff. I like the small felted gnomes I can hide in other objects or plant sticks or outside gnomes. But he was cute sitting on the shelf.

If I had one more room in my house, I would have sprung for this amazing ceramic Italian chandelier. It is gorgeous. The colors were perfect. The price was fair for a chandelier. So pretty!

I love the blue on this ceramic crock.

20140421-222321.jpg

And the blue on this old plunger.

Look at the pretty turquoise jewelry!

And there was great blue grass music being played throughout town. It was a beautiful day. We even got to see this cute little dressed up fellow.

Thank you Mom for spending it with me. I had so much fun!

Have you been antique shopping lately? Thrift store shopping? I love sifting through old things. You never know what you are going to find!

P.S. I shared this on Savvy Southern Style.

  1. OMG Jennie! I love antiquing too – although I don’t do it as often as I would like. And Mama time? That is the best! Love that bracelet! Okay, on to that skirt…. was that another recent find? LOVE IT! I remember stalking that one at the Macy’s in Chicago but it never got marked down enough for me. If it is recent, would you mind sharing the tag? The rack was ever so helpful in locating the other one for me. I just love how you have it paired with a tee, belt and boots – perfection!

    • Thank you Heather! I actually bought this the same day as that other skirt. But I ended up wearing it the next day and I took the tag off and did not save it. : (. However, I have my receipt. I can give you the number it rang up with. I will email you that tonight! : ). It was 60% off!

      Have sweet dreams!

  2. That skirt is amazing. Perfection. I second Heather…where did you find it and is it recent?!
While the skirt is amazing, a vintage toilet plunger (no matter how pretty) kinda makes me gag…not something used that I would ever want to purchase!

    • Thanks Alicia!

The Skirt was from Nordstrom Rack. I will email you the number from my receipt. If your Nordstrom Rack does not have it, they can order it from any Norrstrom Rack in the country and ship it.

I had to study my feelings about that toilet plunger and I agree with you. It is so pretty! But ugh! And shudder! : )

      Have a fantastic week!

  3. Went the weekend before last with my husband to the antique show at the senior center. Have not been for a while and it was fun! He found some puppets he liked, but we ended up not purchasing them (because just another thing to gather dust). However I did purchase some tiny buttons that I can use on the cards I like to make with rubber stamped doll images.

    • Thank you for sharing! Those puppets sound so interesting! I love to make handmade cards, as well. In fact a group of my girlfriends used to get together once a week to hand make cards. Do you know I am all out?! I need to start doing it again. It is such a great hobby!

Enjoy making your cards! : )

      Have a lovely week!

    • Thank you Sarah! I love knowing that you go antiquing with your mom, too. It is such a fun day, hunting for treasure together! Neither of us found anything big, but just looking at cool old things is a good time!

      Have a happy week!

  4. Just this weekend my girlfriend and I went to an antique mall. It was overwhelming though. Too large. I’d need an entire week to go through all the bits and bobs and we only had 30 minutes. Also after thrifting and attending estate sales I found everything hugely overpriced.

How I love your outfit! You look like a fairy princess : ) That skirt is GORG!!! You must feel like fluttering around, doing impromptu pliΓ©s and leaps when you’re in it. The colour is delightful on you.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    • Thank you Suzanne. Thirty minutes is definitely not enough time! I have gone to estate sales, but they always make me sad. My favorite thing to go to are flea markets! It is the best of everything. Unfortunately, I do not drive the freeway, so it is a big deal to get to one! I am hoping to go in tye next two months!

      Have a delightful Wednesday! : )

    • Thank you so much, Liana! Oh, man. I wanted that gorgeous chandelier. But I have nowhere to put it. It was a fabulous price, too.

      Have a gorgeous week! : )

  5. You are so stunning in this outfit! I love the ballerina colors and look on you!
That blue plunger makes me laugh. I once did a play where we spray painted all of the furniture and props in that same color blue spray paint. Now I wish we had done a plunger too. And are those FLOWERS painted on the bottom of it? Awesome!

    • Thank you Cynthia!

That is so cool that you did that for a play! Those are flowers on the bottom of that plunger! And the weird thing is, I swear that plunger is metal. So? I have no idea how the heck it would work!

      Have a marvelous week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much Kara! We did have a great time. I want to do it again soon! I just want to do it before it gets too hot!

      Have a sweet week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Lisa! We had a really good time. Lunch was really good, too! And thank you for the compliment on the outfit! : )

      Have a terrific week!

  6. Ooooohhhhh, LOVE that skirt!!!! I think we’ve talked before about our shared love of tulle. Or maybe I just told you I loved it & my wedding dress had a tulle bottom?! Skirt looked great w/ t-shirt! It’s a definite, classic piece to always keep in your wardrobe!

Antiquing/flea markets are one of my favorite things to do! I grew up antiquing A LOT w/ my parents, so it’s just always been fun for me. I love to go & look at everything, even if I end up not buying!

    πŸ™‚ rebecca

    • Thank Rebecca. I so remember us both talking about our love for tulle. I have an embarrassing amount of tulle items. I think my count is at six or seven now. I think I need to stop! That is enough!

I could just look at vintage and antique things all day. Part of the fun is just coming up with a story for an item. Like that creepy gnome/elf. I mean, what the heck? Where did it come from? Was it a Halloween decoration? How many generations of children were terrorized by it? The only question I do not have is why it is locked in the case. I know why. I would check that lock all of the time if I worked there!

      Have a terrific Thursday!

      Jenni

  7. Oh that skirt is beautiful. It makes me want to continue to pursue the Anthro Snow rose skirt. I love your hair put up like that too.
I love seeing all of the antique store pictures and thank god you did not buy that creepy elf. That is an insult to Elves and Gnomes.
I’m a chandelier nut and I loved seeing the Poodles with the cute Gnome.
That’s so nice that you had a fun day with your Mom!
    Thanks for sharing,
    Stacey

    • Thank you Stacey. I love that skirt! I thought of you when I was putting this post together. I wanted to make sure I showed the vintage jewelry, because you are so good at finding deals on it! : ). I cannot wait to go again! Next time I hope it is not as crowded!

      Have a super weekend!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Jessica! I appreciate that. It was a fun outfit to wear. I like the tulle!

      Have a wonderful weekend! : )

  8. This outfit is, unsurprisingly, another of my favorites. I saw that skirt in an Oprah magazine a few months ago and tried desperately to find it. Our local store had it in black but not in my size, so I couldn’t even try another color for size and order it in the pink. I was bummed. It has such a fairy-ballerina-Stevie Nicks thing going on, and I love all of those things. You look positively sweet, and it positively suits you. My mom and I often going on antiquing trips for a girls’ day. Looks like you spotted some neat things! That elf-gnome is quite a wonder. Did they have to shove him in the back to add to his lurking creepiness? I’d rather him be front and center so I can keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn’t get into any mischief. I’m sure him being hidden back there brought back horrific images of that adorable Elf on the Shelf…

    • Thanks Liz! Do you have a Nordstrom Rack near you? They can look up an item based on the item number and ship it from one store to another. I could email you the number. I usually take a picture of the tag, but I forgot with this one and threw it away. However, I still have the number from the receipt they emailed me. Let me know if you would like it.

I have been thinking of that creature an abnormal amount of times in the last few days. I just have to know who, what, why, where. What was his past?!

But I am too scared to ever go look again!

I hope you have a wonderful time this weekend!

      Jenni

  9. see, i would totally buy that kitchy one. i just love his colors and he’s super cute and not remotely creep like the other one. also, i looove your fireplace area with the ottoman and the peacock. the colors are so vibrant.

    • Thank you so much! I did like the kitschy one, but he was way too much money. And I am getting overrun with stuff. Hence the hiding of the felt gnomes! : ). That other gnome gives me nightmares!

Have a gorgeous weekend! Thank you so much for stopping by and for commenting!
