It’s The Little Things: Small Artwork And I Need Help

Okay. Not necessarily help. I kind of need you to take my side. In a disagreement.

With my husband.

It has been going on for over a month.

My daughter recently finished these two art pieces. I love them. I think they are so cool. They are pen on burlap. And I enjoy all of the details she put into them. When I look at them, I see the pure joy of a teenager.

However, I have a dilemma.

20140417-202309.jpg

My husband wants to hang them askew. So that one is taller than the other.

Can you imagine what that does to my OCD?

You guys, it can’t happen!

20140417-202401.jpg

They will probably go underneath the painting of the vineyard my daughter did in fourth grade.

20140417-202439.jpg

There is so much detail around all of the sides, I do not know how to hang them.

But, I do know my heart cannot take unevenness. Especially since I would see these from my place of worship my bed.

20140417-202723.jpg

What should I do? Is there any other way or place we can hang them? I think side by side is fine, but they have sat on that chest for over a month, because we cannot make a decision.

Please help!

It’s the little things: well, this painting has little things all over it. But really, I need some advice. I cannot keep walking by these another day.

The guilt.

It.

Is.

Too.

Much.

And also, he left the hammer in the corner until we could reach an agreement.

It’s been there for over a month!

Things are gettin’ crazy around here!

That hammer is no accident.

It is almost worse than paintings hung at an angle.

Folks.

He’s playing dirty.

And.

I.

Hate.

To.

Lose.

  1. They should be side by side with enough room to see the side detail and at eye level in a position ( with space) to see the sides from different angles. that’s my first thought, they belong together……by the way your daughter has done a fantastic job with these, they are really cool. Good luck with your decision.

    • Thank you Melinda! I appreciate the help! She did a really good job. I am proud of her. I might have to move some things around to get them to eye level. But that is easy enough!

Thanks again! Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. What about one on top of each other in a line by your big yellow cupboard in your great room? Would they fit like that? That would put them more at eye level so you could see all their intricate details as Melinda suggests too. (Your daughter did a great job on them.)
I hope Ollie feels better soon. My bully doesn’t like being itchy.

    • Thank you! Unfortunately, there is not enough room there. In fact, there used to be a double wall switch there that we had to convert to a single. This was okay, because we never did figure out what the other switch went to. Up and down is definitely doable! I am having another one of her pieces framed right now and it might work next to that! Thanks for the suggestion!

Ollie is doing better. : ). But he is on a double dose of his pills. Poor guy.

I hope you have a beautiful weekend!

    • Thank you! : ) Is it wrong for me to be excited to show my husband people’s votes when he gets home? It truly is the little things. ; ).

Thank you again! Have a gorgeous weekend!

  3. These are so cool! What unusual pieces.

I agree…they would look better side by side or one of top of the other, vertically. That would work too.

    bisous

    • Thanks Suzanne! I will have to play around with them to get them to go vertically, but if they went that way, we could definitely see the sides better. Great suggestion! That is two votes for vertical (and I had not even thought of that!). It might make for a good compromise, too!

      Have a joyful weekend!

  4. Your daughter is so talented! I love that it is pen…total teenager and that is the great part. I am on your side. Side by side to show off her hard and talented work!

    • Thanks Alicia. I will show her these comments! They will make her day! : ). I am still leaning towards side by side, too.

      Have a happy weekend!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much! That is sweet. She will appreciate that. And thank you for your vote! Believe me, it helps! : )

      Have a delightful weekend!

  5. Hi Jenni, I have seen other pics of your house, and nothing seems perfectly straight, symmetrical, matchy etc. It reflect your style so well. So….I will say they should be hung askew; all the side details will show better. I get the OCD thinking, but from an artist point of view, less perfect is better. Good luck!

    • Thank you Jenn! I know it seems my house is askew, but if you look closely, I pretty much have to have two of everything and they have to be symmetrical. There is a method to my madness… I think. ; ). But I am not completely against askew as long as there is something to balance them exactly. Unfortunately, I need to find that piece. I am sure I must have something in this house. I will look and provide an update on what we ended up doing! Thank you for your advice and kind words! I appreciate it!

      Have a fabulous weekend!

  6. Yes, I agree that side by side is probably best. Oh my goodness your daughter has amazing talent, those are just beautiful! I hope she continues to draw & paint & that it always brings her, & you joy!! Just a wonderful talent she has, I’m in awe! I have no artistic talent like that, so I especially appreciate that talent when I see it. Maybe you could rotate them every month or so since there is detail on all the edges. Just so you could showcase those sides for a while?!?

Have a great weekend & please tell your daughter she is an amazing artist & to continue it! I’m serious, she could be an artist as her occupation! 🙂

    • Thank you! I will be thrilled to watch her read your nice words. It will mean a lot. Thank you! And, Wow! I am so excited with all of the advice I have gotten today. This is one of the reasons I love blogging. Everyone has given such great ideas and reasons that I would not have thought of. And rotating them is a brilliant idea!

Thank you for that! Have a gorgeous weekend!

      Jenni

    • Thanks Liana! Does it make me the worst mom that I did not think to ask her?! But I just did and it is the answer I did not want to hear: askew. So, I will have to play around with all of the options until everyone is happy with the end result! Great idea with asking her. I love it! Thanks for the suggestion! : )

      Have a marvelous weekend!

  7. That artwork is amazing. I love it. Your daughter is so incredibly talented. When is she opening her Etsy shop? I would buy her work!!!!

What about not hanging them and instead leaning them on those little holders – I can’t think of their name – it’s like an easel – but they are used to showcase dishes and stuff. Do you know what I’m talking about? That way you can see almost all of the sides and if they are placed on a side table or shelf they’ll be at eye level.

    • Thank you Cynthia! I keep telling her I will open her a shop where all of her proceeds will go into her college savings account. But I do not know if she is ready yet! Hopefully soon! The other problem is , a certain someone, ahem, has to keep everything her little girl made. It is hard letting go!

And I know exactly what you are talking about, but I had not thought of it! That is a great idea! I will consider that, too. The problem is, I have so much “stuff” all of my surface areas are used up. So, they pretty much have to be hung or be lost forever. If only someone, again, ahem, could get rid of things! ; )

Thanks again! I just saw a bunch of cool cat stuff and now I cannot remember where it was!!!

I’ll let you know if I remember it.

      Have a marvelous weekend!

      Jenni

      • ooooohhh.. cool cat stuff is always welcome!

Setting up an Etsy shop is a big deal since it really is a business so I can understand that you need to wait until she is ready.Who needs that kind of pressure when you are young. And – I can understand why you can’t give any of her artwork up! I must say, I am a little obsessed with her art blocks. They are just so intricate and cool!

      • Thanks Cynthia! It is a lot of responsibility. But it might be good for her. I want to see if she wants to work on anything over the summer. I cannot wait for summer break! This has been the hardest year yet.

        Sweet dreams!

        Jenni

  8. I’m with you. But I am OCD impaired as well and have a passion for symmetry. I think you could hang them vertically. Don’t rule out the possibility of re-hanging all the pictures on the wall. Sometimes it must be done.

By the way your daughter is incredibly talented. And you are cute as a button (I get to say that because I’m old). 😉

    • Thank you Missy! I agree with you. I think we might have to rearrange some things. My husband has not been home so we have not gotten to it, but we will definitely be making a decision on Tuesday! Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it! : )

And thank you for the sweet compliment! : ). You made my night!

      Have a wonderful week!

      Jenni
