It’s The Little Things: Being Home

I have a theme (or a bad habit). And that theme is I will have a post ready to go for my “little things” weekly section, but something else will inspire me more. So, that post gets pushed off indefinitely. And I write some random things instead.

But they come from the heart.

That’s gotta count for something?

Right?

While we were in Vegas, we had a good time, but there is just something wonderful about coming home. I wanted to share the little things that made my heart sing yesterday.

It’s good to be home.

Coffee! From a pot! From my very own pot! Oh, how I missed this. The hotel we stayed at did not have a coffee maker. I yearned for it. And I yearned for a cup of coffee that cost less than $3.

And water. In a glass. Filtered water in a glass. Free filtered water in a glass! Know my soul is splashing in this container right now.

20140326-213932.jpg

My pillow. My very own pillow. Devoid of stranger’s drool. How I missed thee.

20140326-215706.jpg

My kids. Okay. No pictures of them, but they were the best part.

20140326-214426.jpg

My puppies.

It is funny, because Ollie could care less that we are home. If anything, he is sad, because our house-sitter lets him sleep in our bed (resulting in our whole bedroom getting scrubbed before I will go to bed). Murphy was extremely excited. But then he spent the whole night guarding the bed in case Ollie got any ideas that he belonged there.

Fresh baked cookies. These are my new favorite cookies. I will have the recipe up next week. I have been thinking about them all week.

What’s your favorite thing about coming home? What do you miss the most?

It’s The Little Things: Enjoying what you have, where you are at. In other words, home.

Also, the sound of ch-ching! is absent in my house. I find this to be my most favorite thing so far about being back. Unfortunately my mind has not quite come to terms with the silence. And even now as I lay in bed in the dark, slot machines are invading my quiet.

But it still does not compare to my very least favorite thing:

Laundry. Ugh. Laundry. How I did not miss thee.

Let me get back to being grateful for water while I fold clothes and lose money to the slots in my head.

P.S. Tomorrow I will have a huge post up about our Las Vegas trip. Complete with a picture of our wedding from fifteen years ago (just don’t tell my husband I’m putting it on the blog!). : )

  1. So looking forward to Vegas recap, but mostly, the wedding picture! I love my friends 10+ years wedding photos…. So full of excitement, youth, and (in my case) ignorant bliss. 🙂 pricless!

    • Thank you Jessica! That is true! I love seeing my friend’s wedding pictures! I need to see yours!

Hope you had a good night!

      I am exhausted! : (

  2. I second that, I wanna see the wedding picture! Wouldn’t it be fun if we got a whole slew of bloggers to post up a wedding picture on the same day? Now there’s an idea…

I know what you mean about coming home! And damn, I’d forgot about how much they charge you for just water in Las Vegas, it’s pretty insane – Victor and I just started asking for tapwater while we were out, thereby shaving ten dollars off our restaurant bill every time. And the slot machine sound – I’d forgotten about that, too! That was like a mechanical avalanche in a robot factory, the casino employees must all have tinnitus.

  3. I can’t wait to see your Vegas pics and wedding photo. I’m sure you look almost the exact same.

People either love Vegas or hate it and I am of the latter. It is so tacky and overdone. I used to have to go there once a year for my business to trade shows. I’m glad I no longer need to since we often used up precious holiday time there.

Funny enough when I got back from Jamaica the only thing I really missed was my pug. Since it was an all inclusive we didn’t have to worry about extra charges and also since it was so fab with so many things to do we didn’t actually leave the resort. That didn’t bother me one bit.

On other trips though I am definately happy to get home to my bed, my house and my puppy.

    • Thank you Suzanne. Surprisingly, the thing I like the most is the tackiness. I like that it is gaudy and over the top. It knows itself and doesn’t care what anybody thinks. It’s the loud obnoxious rich girl who knows she can get away with it. And I admire it for knowing itself so well.

I cannot stand the cigarette smoke everywhere. And the noise. That is what does me in.

We definitely can wait at least another nine years before we return again. But we did have a good time despite some snafus.

I loved reading about your Jamaica trip! How fun! For now, we have to stick to the states so we can be close by for emergencies with the kids. But eight years and we are there, baby!

      Have a super weekend!

  4. I’m almost never ready to come home from a vacation, but I do miss our cats whenever we’re gone for a while. I can’t wait to see photos from your trip! I’ve never been to Vegas, but would love to go someday!

I’m also looking forward to your peanut butter cookie recipe! I made some 3-ingredient peanut butter cookies this week … and they are goood! LOVE peanut butter cookies!

    • Thank you Sarah! Those cookies. Oh, those cookies. A cookie has never disappeared so fast!

It is SO good to be home! We go on our family trip in two months, so soon I will be doing it all over again.

      With more bags!

      Have an exciting weekend!

  5. Glad you had a good time! Can’t wait to see your pics 🙂 When we go to Maui…I don’t miss anything but my daughter…lol…something about it 🙂 ( I think it’s not having to go to work!)

    • Thank you Kara! Oooohhh! Hawaii! Now, I could stay there. Forever. We are going there for our family vacation in two months. Cannot wait! Big difference between there and Vegas!

I hope you have a peaceful weekend!

  6. Coming home is wonderful, isn’t it? Kyle and I have taken more roadtrips to Michigan and back than we’d care to over the last year, but coming home never gets old. I too go straight for a warm bevvie: coffee, chai tea, etc. There’s also nothing like sleeping in your own bed. And the best part? Reunions with Jazzy. I love that one of your dogs couldn’t care less you were back because he had to give up the bed. lol I don’t think any of Jazzy’s sitters spoil her more than we do, so when we return, so does all the pampering! Looking forward to your Vegas recap!

    • It is so good to be back. Of course, with it comes the stresses of life. Like today I spent almost five hours in the emergency room. I would welcome the sound of those slot machines right about now. And tomorrow night, we are taking three teenage girls to a heavy metal concert. Oi.

Maybe I spoke to soon. Can I go back? Right now?

      Have a terrific weekend!

    • Thank you Cynthia! If everyone does the wedding photo thing, I will definitely link to the post! How fun!

      Have a great Friday!

  7. As much as I love traveling, I love being home too. If I do travel, I prefer hotels to someone’s home. I am not down with sharing bathrooms, not having my own space, etc…… That is funny about your dog since both of my dogs sleep with us! I never thought I’d be a dog owner, let alone sleep with them, and now that I have I cannot imagine my life without. I will admit they do make the sheets dirtier even though they are so small. Oh, if you do post stuff on eBay let me know. I’m sure I’d love to buy it all! LOL! The dress I bought at full price was the Gemme Dress, and the skirt was the Amalia skirt (it was still 99). Both so worth it!

    • Oooh! I cannot wait to see your cute clothes!

I agree with you. I would much rather stay in a hotel than in someone’s house. I also prefer that when other people visit me. It is so much better if they are in a hotel.

Murphy sleeps with us. But Ollie sheds and drools. He is huge. If he fell off the bed, he could get seriously hurt because he cannot jump. So, he is on a dog bed. Murphy does not shed, so it does not bother me. But I change my sheets every three days, so it is never an issue.

Off to check out your blog. I noticed you had a new post today. Yeah!

      Have sweet dreams!

  8. I constantly feel pulled in two different directions: homebody vs globetrotter. I get itchy feet if I’ve been away for a while… but I also love being home. Cats, dog, husband (he doesn’t always travel with me because of his work schedule), tea that is not Lipton’s or Red Rose in a bag…

I’m excited to see your Vegas pics! I’ve been there twice, but both times we were there mainly to climb at Red Rocks.

    • Thank you Liana! I just got my Vegas post up right now. My husband was in a minor car accident today, but hurt his back, so it has been a long day in the e.r. Thankfully, they gave him good medicine and he is out for the night right now. Poor guy.

If you do the wedding picture, let me know and I will link it here! : )

      Have a fabulous Friday!

      Jenni

      • Thank you Liana! I linked it up! I love, love, love your wedding picture! You look gorgeous (as you always do)! Thank you so much for sharing! It made me so happy!

        Have a super Saturday!

        Jenni

    • Thank you Rachel. Yes, laundry blows. Blows. Blows. Ugh! And I only managed to put one load out of the five suitcases in today. Not lookin’ good!

Have a wonderful Friday! Hopefully devoid of laundry!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Melodee! Yes, being home is so nice. But I always forget. Now I have to pay bills and hire people for repairs and deal with the mundane everyday. I guess being away has many benefits, too! : )

      Have a lovely Friday!

      Jenni

    • I agree. If I go away for too long, Lisa, I bring those things. Like my pillow. My giant pillow gets packed! This thrills my husband. Thrills! ; )

      I want house-slippers now!

      Have a beautiful Friday!

      Jenni

  9. I love to travel, but agree its always nice to return to your own home! I can’t wait to read about your trip & see your pics! If you couldn’t tell from my blog, I love pictures! 🙂

Thanks for your concern & anger about my biopsies! I had no idea that horrible surgeon was going to cut out that much from my face, it was just awful! Just one of those things in life you have to endure I guess.

Have a great night & weekend!
    Rebecca

    • Thank you Rebecca. It is good to be home.

Oh man! Those biopsies! That is so crazy! At least they did not scar! The ear was a few years ago, right? You just had the nose done this time? I am surprised you could go through that again. I would be so paranoid about trusting someone after that bad doctor! Oh my gosh! I cannot imagine. I am so sorry that happened to you. I hope this biopsy turns out all right.

I had a comment last night for your awesome outfit post, but it disappeared! So, I need to rewrite it! I will in the morning, but I did not want you to think I had not taken stock of all of your clothes that I am coveting! Cause I did and I am! : )

      Have a relaxing weekend!

      Jenni
