It’s The Little Things: Vintage Folk Belt

20140318-113250.jpg

When I saw that Modcloth’s next vintage line was going to consist of bohemian pieces, my heart sang. And my stomach sank. Because I was all ready over my monthly clothing budget. Besides, I thought, what are the odds I will get the one piece I want in the collection?

I had wanted a beautiful black maxi skirt with rainbow patches on the bottom.

Their vintage pieces generally sell out lightning fast. They price them very affordably.

And so I stalked the website. Maybe hoping that my odds would be slightly higher than I had thought they would be.

Then I moved on, because I thought my piece had sold out.

One morning last week, just as I was about to go get ready, a banner slid across the screen of my iPad. It said something like, “Earlier access to our vintage bohemian line.”

I jumped over to the Modcloth App. And there was my skirt. Not sold out. I added it to my cart as quickly as I could, not noting measurements or sizing. I just wanted to realize the dream. Being vintage, there was only one of each item being sold.

But there was something else, too. Something I hadn’t counted on.

A vintage belt.

But not just any vintage belt.

A vintage folk belt.

And anything with the word folk in it is automatically better. Isn’t that right folks?

I added it to my cart. Placed my order. And tried not to feel guilty.

20140318-113324.jpg

It came. And I love it. As my daughter said when she finally saw what I was wearing, “Gurl. That. Is. The. Best. Belt. Ever.”

When I told her it ties in the back and therefore will fit her, too, the grin increased.

20140318-113012.jpg

I wore it on Saint Patrick’s Day. It arrived right before my husband and I were going out for lunch.

And I love it.

20140318-113226.jpg

And I love making funny faces whilst wearing it.

I think I am confusing the word folk with dork.

20140318-113150.jpg

Because it is a fun belt and I like to be a fun gal.

It’s the little things: little accessories that make the whole day better.

Do you have an accessory like that? Any vintage pieces that make your heart sing?

It’s quite all right if you don’t.

Different strokes for different folks.

And all that jazz.

P.S. I shared this on Savvy Southern Style.

And on The Pleated Poppy!

  1. That belt is awesome, it will go with so many things in your wardrobe. Your so lucky to have a daughter to ‘share’ and go shopping with for girly things. I have two boys and would love to have someone to ‘ talk fashion’ with. I once had a large collection of special vintage items which once belonged to Stevie Nicks. I have sold most of the collection since I didn’t wear much of it and found it hard to display. I kept some of her jewelry and always feel special when I wear it.

    • Thank you!

And Oh. My. Gosh. That is too cool! I absolutely love that you kept some of the jewelry. I would definitely feel special wearing it! Man. Super jealous over here!!!!!!

Thank you for sharing! And for the compliment! : )

      Have a lovely day!

    • Thank you Heather! The skirt is SO RAD! I wore it two days ago and I am in love with it. Both pieces make me so happy!!! : )

      Have a terrific day!

  2. That belt is SO amazing! And like mentioned above, you could seriously wear it with almost everything.

Sort of an aside, do you buy the same size in Modcloth as you do Anthro? I have been tempted by many things by Modcloth in the past but have never bought anything because I hate to return things!

    • Thank you Katie! I appreciate it.

In my opinion, Modcloth runs smaller than Anthropologie and Free People runs larger. So in Anthropologie I can get away with a small and I mostly buy medium, but at Modcloth I ALWAYS purchase a medium. And at Free People I always purchase a small. So Modcloth is closer to sizing to Anthropolgie, but I would never take a small there.

Also Modcloth always offers free shipping over $50 AND free returns within 30 days. Super easy!

      Hope that helps!

      Have a happy day! : )

  3. Oh Jenni, your pictures made me laugh, in a good way. Thanks for being the one responsible for starting another day with a smile on my face.

Ps. I saw this quote on Facebook. You’ve probably seen it but if not…”Be yourself…unless you can be a unicorn…then be a unicorn.”

    • Thank you Brynne! I am glad to make you smile. And I believe everyone should always be themselves. I weary of the same old thing. I have seen that saying one time before but had forgotten about it. Thank you for reminding me of it! I is awesome!

I have been thinking of you all day. I cannot reply to emails from this phone. I will write you tonight! : )

      Have a lucky day!

  4. Oh my gosh, that belt! It is the cutest and so you. What an awesome way to accessorize a solid colored dress. I love your silly faces pointing out your favorite parts. Gnomes are definitely folksy, so this belt is true to your name! I have a vintage Nordstrom bag that was my great grandmother’s. It’s cream snakeskin with brass trimmings. It’s my most used evening bag. I also have a vintage rhinestone and rose quartz bracelet from the 30’s. They’re so special because I connect them with specific people, and it’s fun to think about the era they’re from and how they were worn back then. Imagine what a bohemian spirit once wore that belt! Someone probably similar to you in a lot of ways.

    • Thank you Liz! I do love that belt! I think it will be really fun with my blue and white Scalloped Striped Dress, too. I cannot wait to wear it again!

I love that you have your grabdmother’s purse. I would love something like that! I do not know what happened to my grandmother’s things. You are so lucky to have that piece of her with you.

I have SO much to do before we leave on Saturday morning! We have a house sitter come for the dogs and it is so stressful getting the house ready for her!!!!!

      Have a relaxing Friday!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much! : ). I appreciate the compliment! And thank you for stopping by!

      Have a peaceful weekend!

  5. Love that belt! I think I would try to wear it as a necklace, maybe with a little diy adjustment, since I don’t wear dresses or skirts very often. I was wondering – did the belt fold over when you were wearing it or sat down?

    • Thank you Donna! I NEVER would have thought of wearing it as a necklace! What a cool idea! It did not fold over at all when I was wearing it. It is very sturdy.

Thank you for the idea! : )

      Have a beautiful Friday!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Cynthia! I am checking her bags before she goes to college! ; ). This one is Momma’s!!! But she can borrow it when she is home. I’m nice like that!

I hope your Friday is fantastic!

      Jenni

  6. Cute belt & perfect for that dress, which I love, by the way! Super cute! It fits you perfectly & very fashionable, classic though (which I tend to think is my style, classic pieces overall)! I can’t wait to see the skirt. I pretty much live in maxi skirts & dresses spring through fall. They are so say, but look so put together w/ the addition of accessories, with no effort at all!

    Have a great day!

    • Thank you Rebecca! I so agree with you about maxis. They are so much easier than jeans. Dresses, too. It always surprises me when someone asks me why I wear so many dresses because jeans are easier. Although, I will admit thatI am planning on wearing jeans for my flight on Saturday! This is mostly because when I ask for a good room at the hotel I don’t wanna look too fancy. ; )

      Have a great night!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Jac! I was gleeful! : ). I had had the belt for approximately two minutes when the picture was taken because I had ripped the other one I was wearing off to throw this one immediately on! So exciting!

Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

      Have an enjoyable Friday!

      Jenni

  7. oooh I am so happy everything came together and you were able to get the dress you wanted PLUS that awesome belt! It’s so cool and so original. You have such great taste! And of course I love it with the green dress (my favorite color!)!

    • Thank you Ashley! It is wonderful when things come together! I wish it happened more! ; ). Your words are so sweet and I really appreciate them!

      Thank you!

      Have a gorgeous Friday!

      Jenni

  8. You look beautiful. Your hair and makeup look amazing with your green dress and boots. I think that green is one of “your” colors. The belt is fantastic. I can’t wait to see the other piece. Have fun on your trip.

    • Thank you so much! I borrowed my daughter’s lipstick that day. And now I do not want to give it back! It is a Clinique Chubby Stick in Raspberry. I hadn’t brushed my hair again that day! I was trying that out again! I appreciate your compliments so much!

I am so excited about going, but I have a sweet house sitter that comes and stays at my house. I am trying to get everything ready for her. The dogs love her. She lets Ollie sleep with her when we are gone. She spoils him!

      Have a great Friday!

      Jenni

  9. you are simply the cutest. I just love your style and checking out what you put together…the only problem is that I leave your blog and want to go online shopping, haha!

    • Thank you Melodee! You made my night! : ). All fashion blogs make me want to shop. It is hard. : (. I have so much I want but I have to wait until April 1st for anything else. Seriously, I am not even checking my wishlist right now because I do not want to be tempted. The funny thing is, as I wait, the more I don’t want something or something else catches my fancy. My advice is wait (unless it is one of a kind). I used to be so impatient and the more I practiced it, the easier it became.

      Have a super Friday!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much! I am glad you like the belt. I respect your fashion sense. That means a lot! : )

I hope your Friday is fabulous!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Jessica! Oh! I am excited to share that skirt! It is so awesome. Pictures did not do it justice. Thank you again! : )

      Have a wonderful weekend!

      Jenni

  10. That belt is awesome. So perfect for you. I also went to Modcloth and checked your skirt out – you HAD to get that one, it’s perfect for you. But did the skirt fit you?! I really hope so!!

    • Thank you Gwen! The skirt fits perfectly! Isn’t that crazy? I mean it fits like it was tailored just for me. Maybe I will bring it to Vegas. Oh no! Another choice! ; )

I cannot wait to show it!

      Have a happy weekend!

      Jenni

  11. That belt is the cutest thing EVER! I love it, especially paired with that gorgeous green dress – one of my favorite colors, too! You dress in all the colors I love to use to decorate my home πŸ˜‰

    • Thank you Brynne! Those are my favorite colors to decorate my home, too! They just make me so happy! : )

      Have a terrific weekend!

      Jenni

  12. You got me a little excited when you mentioned ModCloth because I thought I would have to add that to my wishlist. That belt is great and I love it with the green dress. Is the dress Anthro?
By the way, I love your makeup and think that it may be a good blog post to share with us your makeup tips. I could really use a lesson.
    Have a great evening,
    Stacey

    • Thank you Stacey! The dress is an Anthropologie dress from two years ago. It came in many colors. I believe it was called Basketweave Dress. I just know I got mine on sale for $30. It was a size medium and I did not think I would ever be able to fit into it. So, when I wear it, it reminds me of how far I have come.

My makeup. I think it is amazing that my makeup photographs well, because I think in real life I can be a hot mess. I am always in a hurry and do not feel like I blend my foundation in well enough. Maybe I will do a close up of that one day! : ). I do go to the beauty counters once a year to get tips and I try to practice them in real life. Great idea. But probably will be more of a funny post than a helpful one. Thank you for the suggestion!

      Have a beautiful week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you so much! I cannot wait to wear it again. It is one of my favorites! : ).

Thank you for the compliments! They are much appreciated! : )

      Have a wonderful week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Rachel! It is super fun! I am happy that it is in such great condition! Modcloth is the best!

      Have a stupendous week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Marie! I appreciate that. I was hoping to find a similar one so I could link it for my readers, but I have yet to find one.

      Thank you again!

      Have a fun week!

      Jenni
