Antique Shopping

My kids were at school. My husband went to work. The house was clean acceptable. I headed to the antique store to browse.

There is something about being around antiques for me. I find it very soothing. I love to look at the chipped pieces of history. The stories in my head start spinning. It is like listening to the music of the past.

I have a favorite antique store in town. There is a seller there who is a genius at displaying her pieces. I wanted to share the beauty with you.

I ended up buying an antique tablecloth with a rooster on it from her section for a great price. I just loved the unique colors. I like to layer old tablecloths when I have get togethers.

I also purchased some old lace. I don’t know what I will do with it yet, but it was too good of a price to pass up. When I was a child, I had a lace collection. And I would sit in the middle of my room and pull out my bits of lace. I would caress them and put them in order. ‘Cause I’m all normal like that. My favorite piece was rainbow colored.

From a different seller, I purchased this old croquet set. I had been wanting one for some time. I had seen them on Etsy. But just the price to ship the sets on Etsy ended up being the actual price I paid for my whole set. I was one happy gal. Can you guess why I wanted this?

Oh. Because I’m so athletic?

Yes?

No.

Think Alice in Wonderland. Think “crazy fun house.”

Have you been antiquing lately? What did you spot? What did you see?

P.S. I shared this on Savvy Southern Style.

  1. I also love a visit to my local antique shop. Like you I find it relaxing just to take my time and browse and wonder. I love to find items from my childhood such as toys, swap cards in which were a huge thing here in Australia growing up in the 70’s, embroidered table cloths and check out the awesome furniture and nicknaks. Love what you scored, especially the croquet set. Thanks for sharing, the photos are great.

    • Thank you Melinda! That sounds awesome! I love embroidered tablecloths! And they are always so much cheaper than new tablecloths at our antique stores. I love to browse as well. I went last night as well, but left empty handed. There was just nothing that called my name. But it was still a lot of fun to look! : )

      Have a terrific Tuesday!

  2. That tulle skirt!! I wouldn’t know what to do with it, but i love it! I like the idea of going…but never do. I feel overwhelmed with all the stuff, plus I don’t take my kids because we would have to buy the whole store! I like your finds though!

    • Thank you Alicia! I know that skirt is so great! I would not know what to do with it either! But it was so cool! I never went to antique stores when my kids were little. Oh my gosh! They would have broken everything! It would not have been fun for me. Now I only go if they are both in school. It is one of the few great things about them growing up. Adult time! But I would trade it all for just a few more moments of gummy smiles and the smell of teething biscuits! : )

I hope you are having sweet dreams!

  3. I love antique shops, thrift shops, tag sales —- you name it! And I have decided, since we don’t really NEED anything (!) to collect pretty saucers/small bowls (always can use these!) and flatware. Sometimes I must admit I venture beyond these items if I fall in love but basically consider it a good day if I can come home with a pretty spoon or plate! Love your croquet set – it looks great just sitting there!

    • Thank you Lori Ann! I like your idea of a bowl or plate. It is small and fits great in a household! As an owner of a small house, I really like that idea. The antique store I frequent never has any plates or bowls, but I am sure other stores do! I like flatware, too. My little forks have all but disappeared. I think they accidentally got thrown away!

      Have a super week!

  4. what a beautiful antique shop and how fun to get away and poke around there….love your finds! I am certain you will find good use for the lace, and the croquet set is ca-yute!!!!

    • Thank you melodee! I am thinking of using the lace as a belt! Or as trim on a too short skirt!

I hope your week is delightful!

  5. I have a thing for old books, especially old climbing, mountaineering and skiing books. Fortunately, I live in a mountain community so the secondhand bookshops often have good finds.

I love the croquet set. Your decor has so much personality.

    • Thank you Liana! I like your collection! It is different and easy to acquire. Which makes the hunt all the more fun!

My son is itching to use that croquet set! I am hoping it stays intact for awhile longer! : )

      Have a great week!

    • Thank you Jessica! Yes, kids do cramp the antique shopping adventures! Not quite the favorite activity of the youth! I do love the tablecloth. It is fun to layer!

      Have a terrific Tuesday!

  6. That tablecloth is so gorgeous – I love the color and the print! That croquet set is so fun… I adore the Alice in Wonderland vibe!

    • Thank you Brynne! I love the Alice in Wonderland theme. I really appreciate your sweet words about it! : ). I am in love with your house. With every single part of it! It is SO cool!

      Have a lovely week!

  7. This shop owner is a genius at displaying their wares!!! I would have bought everything including the metal chest of medical drawers! I have this bad habit of buying antiques, like old gramophones and doll carriages and then not knowing what to do with them! I think your strategy of buying fabric and lace (and touching it delicately…weird but also hilarious) is a good one. It takes up little space and you can always use a new table cloth! Beautiful pictures!

    • Thank you Angie! I love your blog, so I am so happy you stopped by! I wanted that chest so badly, but I have no room for it. The store has a quick turnover so it is gone now. My garage has so many antiques I bought for a steal. I cannot imagine what my husband would say if I brought yet another one home! : ). Maybe one day I will do a post about the awesome finds wasting away in my garage!

      Thank you for visiting!

      Have a lovely week!

    • Thank you Cynthia! We have to meet some day and go out. I think we are about an hour and a half away from each other! Someday!…

I love the lace. I could not resist it for the price. I really want to make a belt out of it or maybe a hem. Right now it just sits in my green cabinet waiting to be used. I probably will get too attached to it to use it!

      Have a fun week!

  8. I would love to find a vintage croquet set. I was just discussing this with my husband on a recent walk. Glad you found one. Alice in Wonderland…….that is of interest to me too. ‘-)

    • Thank you Sarah! I hope you find one! I had been looking at them on Etsy, but they were much too expensive for me. I was glad I found one in my town. I hope you find one, too. The colors just make me so happy! Thank you for commenting and stopping by! : )

      Have a great week!

      Jenni

    • Hi Diana! Thank you for visiting! : ). And commenting! I did have a good time! I went again a few days ago, but ended up leaving empty handed. Nothing sang my name.

      Have a lovely week!

  9. oh, I love the idea of your childhood lace collection! I love wandering around antique shos but we don’t have great options hereabouts (not sure why.) There is however a fantastic little shop stuffed full of vintage goods I get to about once a year- some of it is super expensive, but an amazing hoard often used by film costumers!

    This store looks amazing!

    • Thank you Sarah! I love vintage treasures. I miss my lace collection! My favorite being a rainbow colored piece. I wonder what happened to it? I had not thought about it for years. It wasn’t until I was wondering why on Earth I had purchased the lace that I remembered how passionate I used to be about it.

I long to see your store! I bet it is filled with treasures!

      Have a jubilant week!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Mona! It is addicting! I have all ready begged my husband to set a date when we can go antiquing together! It is so much fun!

I hope you get to go!

      Have a lovely week!

      Jenni

    • Awwww man! Who knew?! Well, I guess you did! ; ). It is nice of you to comment and stop by! You are so sweet!

I miss you! Have a fantastic week!

  10. I love antique stores but I have found that I don’t go as often lately, but after seeing your post I should try to get back into it. I used to go a lot before having my daughter. This antique store that is in your town looks like my kind of antique store!
I love old table clothes too and have used them and braved washing them with regular detergent. They hold up well but in the future I will use Woolite.
Thanks for sharing these great pictures,
    Stacey

    • Thank you Stacey. I always just wash them regularly, too. I have two that I have had for fourteen years and they have held up beautifully that way. I have never used Woolite. And if I purchased it, I would probably forget I had it! : )

I hope you get to go antiquing soon! Although flea marketing is more fun with better deals! I must go soon!

      Have a delightful Friday!

      Jenni

  11. That’s a terrific tablecloth — I love the rooster and the colors! Your croquet set reminded me of happy summers at the cottage. Thanks for sharing your post, which I saw at My Romantic Home. Ann Marie @ Iris Abbey

    • Thank you Iris! I am so glad you like the tablecloth. I love it. The colors and the roosters just make me smile. I am so glad you stopped by and commented. Thank you! I will check out your blog tonight! : )

      Have a beautiful weekend!
