It’s The Little Things: Christmas Gnomes

T’was the week before Christmas
And all through my home
Many creatures were stirring,
Including a gnome.

Boxes from Amazon cluttered the house
It was any wonder I still had a spouse.
Stockings and garlands were hung… and then rehung by me
And wee little gnomes frolicked and hid in the tree.

A large gnome would greet you when you came to the door
Others perched upon shelves, avoiding the floor.
Every gnome came from hiding to sit and to spy.
Their only intent was to try and stay dry.

For right underneath their tiny quick feet,
A big creature watched them as if something to eat.
They sat on their deer, their carriage and bus.
Why, one even rode a dragon called, “Gus.”

The monster would stretch out, lay down and snore.
Certainly an enticement they could not ignore.
They would wait for his heavy sighs to commence.
Then drop down on his head with a twitch and a wince.

Christmas is here, the gnomes’ time has come
Soon they will be locked up with the candles and rum.
For now they grab whiskers and swing from fat jowls
The thing they shall miss? The strange creature’s howls.

I lay in my nightgown, for three days, no less
I thought all was safe in my Christmas mess.
When from the next room, the sound of chewing had grown
I crawled from my bed to see what Ollie had done.

The wee man was fine, just a tad bit wet.
There was not even a dent in his red Christmas hat.
On the back of his steed, his strange plotting began…
For the night was still young for this brave little man.

I heard his soft whisper as I tucked him in,
“Until next time, great beast. This time you may win.
Christmas will come, next year I am sure.
Meanwhile, us gnomes will just have to endure.”

    • Thanks Sarah! I will answer that. The gnomes. For sure. Tonight. Oh my gosh! Ollie just ate a bunch of candy. Now I have to watch him! He is always getting into something. I am surprised he is not eating the tree. Or the ornaments!

But then he looks at me with those eyes and I melt.

      He knows he is irresistible!

      Have a great weekend!

  1. Oh Jenni – this is too cute! My boy (Lab) Guinness is quite enthralled with the nativity scene I have up. Have to put it up high and STILL have to watch it lest I be short a wise man!

    • Thank you Judi! Oh my gosh, first, what an adorable name for your lab. I love it! Do you call him Guinney? I know exactly what you are talking about. Ollie would eat absolutely everything if we let him. He inhales his food. He doesn’t even chew it!

I hope your nativity scene lasts the season! That would not be good if he gets it! : )

      Have a terrific Friday!

    • Thank you Melodee! I try to find any tiny sparkly thing for them to sit on or ride during the holidays. I think I enjoy it much more than the kids. ; )

      Have a lovely weekend!

  2. I had mised Ollie. I am so glad to see him again. Your poem and photo spread are so creative! Wonderful job. I still haven’t figured out why you think you aren’t creative. You dress very beautifully and decorate and cook so creatively. I look forward to seeing what you post tomorrow.

    • Thank you! I was thinking of you when I added him. I had no idea what my Little Thing was going to be yesterday. And then I saw the pictures I had snapped the night before at dinner. He always makes us groan when he begs with those eyes. He was being bad there, because he left his spot in the living room he is supposed to stay at while we eat dinner. I don’t like him under the table when we eat. Thankfully we were about done as he scooted his way towards us.

And thank you for your sweet “creative” comment. I guess I sometimes don’t feel creative or capable, because I start comparing myself to others. I cannot believe some of the projects some people can accomplish. Ot is all I can do sometimes to just wipe the table off. Let alone make it beautiful.

I just need to realize that I can only do what I can do and not worry about others. So, thank you. I appreciate it. I will try not to be so hard on myself. : )

      Have a lovely weekend!

    • Thank you Cynthia! I appreciate it. I wrote it in my car while I was waiting to pick up the kids from school yesterday. I am so glad you like it! : ). It was super fun to do.

      Have a fabulous Friday!

  3. Hi Jenni! Yes, I do call him Guinney! Long story – his “bio” mom was named Bailey (as in Bailey’s Irish Cream), his “bio” dad is Murphy (as in Murphy’s Stout) so I thought he needed a good Irish alcoholic name as well! I guess he really needs to be a chocolate Lab with the name Guinness, but he is a beautiful yellow one. Our dogs add so much to our lives, don’t they?!

    • That is so cute. I was totally picturing a brown lab. I am glad you clarified so I could get it right in my head. Dogs do add so much to our lives. I love the names of every lab in Guinness’s family. Now I know my other dog Murphy has another meaning as well. Cool!

      Have a lovely weekend!

  4. I love how you caught your pooch in the act! So naughty, but so cute!
My 3-year-old Kesh enjoys Christmas ornaments of the felt variety. Yes, she ate half of my gorgeous Anthropologie felt pompom garland two weeks ago. She was pooping rainbows for days 🙂 lol

PS. You’ve convinced me that I need more gnomes in my life!

    • Oh my gosh! Not an Anthropologie garland! I know exactly which one you are talking about, too. That would have been really sad. Ollie just ate about twenty white chocolate hershey kisses this week. They certainly keep us on our toes!

And I am so happy about the gnomes! Everyone would should have at least two (you don’t want them to be lonely ; ) ). The little guys are too cute!

      Have a wonderful week!

      Jenni
