It’s The Little Things: Halloween Goody Bags

It’s here! Happy Halloween! Every year I stay up late and make goody bags for the trick-or-treaters. I have done this every year since I have lived on my own. I told you, I like Halloween.

When I first started making the goody bags with my family, we would gather around and make them together. I have such fond memories of this. I thought it was a good time. However, for the last two years, I have been on my own. Nobody wants any part of doing the goody bags with me. Aw, well. I still think it is fun.

This year I made 45 bags. When we first moved to our current home, I made 125. And I almost ran out. But ten years later, the kids in the neighborhood are slowly growing up. I only had 19 trick-or-treaters last year. It was incredibly sad.

I made my goody bags last night. Inside each one was a ghost eraser, a pumpkin crayon ring, a plastic witch finger, a full sized candy bar and a couple of pieces of small candy. Witch fingers crossed we get more trick-or-treaters this year! I bought tons of extra candy just in case.

It’s the little things: Halloween goody bags made with cheer!

What are your plans today? How many trick-or-treaters do you usually get? And what is your favorite Halloween candy this year? Mine is Butterfingers.

  1. Wow, you have a great set-up for Halloween. We are all ready to go to. We have more goodies for the Trick or Treaters than we could possibly use as well as some fake and real pumpkins ready for dark.

This year we have most opted for retro 70’s sweets with a few jelly bloody fingers and similar.

Our trick or treaters vary each year. The biggest factor is the weather 🙂 but it is going to be fine and mild tonight. Three years ago it really really rained hard and we just received 2 or 3 groups but last year we had a lot and had to ration our treats at the end.

    Happy Halloween Jenni!

    • I hope you got a lot of trick or treaters! We ended up just getting around 30. It was really slow. The kids had a good time, though. So, that is what matters to me. And it was fun handing the goody bags out. I saw so many cute kids.

Again, I am up too late! Must get some rest.

Tomorrow should be less hectic after 11:00. Hopefully. Knock on wood. Then I want to catch up on my blog reading.

      Have a great day!

  2. We also do not get many trick or treaters but for the ones that do, full size candy bars they get. Since our treaters tend to be a bit older, we have abandoned the younger treats/bags but do love the idea! I am with you on butterfingers – way to go girl. If you are going to use the calories, gotta be a butterfingers. Have you ever had then blended flurry style with vanilla ice cream – days worth of calories but to die for!

    • Hi Shari!

Oh my goodness! Right? Butterfingers are the best! And I love it blended in ice cream. Yum! How many trick or treaters did you end up getting? We got about 30. I wish it were more!

The leftover goody bags will be divvied up amongst friends. Although, I do not have a ton left.

Have a lovely beginning of the month!

  3. This is awesome, Jenni! I’d totally love to come trick-or-treating at your house! I love goodie bags. They’re so thoughtful and creative! Before we moved to Savannah, we lived in a house out in the woods on a country road. No trick-or-treaters for us! So usually we just partied with our friends and family. Now we’re in downtown Savannah, and I don’t know if we’ll have trick-or-treaters. I didn’t buy candy because I’m not anticipating it. We’ll be having a Harry Potter marathon and making goodies. I’m doing all my blog reading this morning, but around noon, I’ll start the cooking. I’m making butterbeer, jammy dodgers, and savory pumpkin pasties for dinner. Wish me luck!

    • Thanks Liz! Your night sounds amazing! Butterbeer? Um, yes please. I am so jealous! I grew up in the country also and that is why this very idea of trick or treating is unbelievably fun to me. Passing out candy was always a dream of mine. And now it finally came true, even if it was for just 30 kids.

Have a marvelous week. I hope your Harry Potter night was fun!

  4. I want to bring my kids to your house! We have a 2&4 yr old so we don’t hand anything out because we’re out the whole time! Our neighbors give goody bags to our kids but no one else. It’s definitely a special treat!

    • Hi Lyn! Thank you! 2 and 4! You have your hands full! I bet this Halloween was so much fun. And your Christmas. Awwww, what a great age they are to really start enjoying the holidays! You are so lucky. I hope they got some fun treats! : )

      Have a happy weekend!

  5. Those bags look gorgeous! Wow, your neighbourhood kids sure are lucky, I hope they appreciate all the love that went into these! And oh well, kids growing up is a part of life… maybe kids who live further away have heard of your awesome goodie-bags and will come trekking from far and wide instead? Here’s hoping, eh? 🙂

    • Thank you Gwen! It was a fun night. My mother, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew took my kids tricker or treating while I stayed home and passed out candy. I got around thirty trick or treaters. They were all super sweet and polite. It was a pleasant night. Thank you so much for liking my goody bags! I loved making them.

      Have a lovely weekend!

  6. Happy Halloween Jenni! I would so love one of those goodie bags. I bet it was fun making them. I enjoy crafty things like that and liked seeing them.

    • Hi! Thank you! It was fun and super relaxing.

It is so funny. I just read your reply and I heard a scary noise at the foot of my bed. It was Ollie clawing at the couch. I forgot his bed was in the dryer! I had to go give it to him so he could go to sleep. Poor guy. I think he thought it was hiding in our bed! Bulldogs are hilarious!

      Have a great weekend!

  7. Goodie Bags?!! 45 Goodie Bags?! You are amazing, Jenni! I wish I had the craft bug but I just don’t. All I could think was to whine – what a lot of woooooork when I read your post. I am dying to see your costume btw!!!

    • Awww. Thanks Cynthia. Selfishly, it is so much fun! I love making them! I like to think of them as one last fun surprise for the night. It is one of my favorite parts about Halloween!

I hoe Marcy enjoyed herself! I wonder what she thought of such a crazy night!

      I hope it was awesome!

      Jenni

    • Thank you Sayaka! I always feel grateful to them that they trudged ip to my house. It is not an easy neighborhood with curves and such.

I hope you and your little ones had a night of fun and treats!
