Alpaca

On September 28th, my children and I went to a local alpaca farm that was open to the public to commemorate National Alpaca Day. I was not sure what to expect, but it was nearby. It was free. And it sounded like fun.

My kids had a blast. They loved feeding the alpacas ($1 a bag).

The alpacas only have lower teeth, so they cannot bite the kids when they feed them. I think they look like cartoon characters. Each one was so cute.

Here I am in the pen. Please excuse my scant makeup. It was the weekend. It was hot. And I got one shot at a photo.

But I did get a pic in our house of what one wears to an alpaca farm. This is Anthropologie’s Cuoco Henley from the spring and the star necklace that was recently on sale for $10.

If you ever have a chance to visit an Alpaca Farm, I highly recommend it. The animals are so clean. I know when I am in a petting zoo, it kind of grosses me out with all of the goat droppings. However, all of the alpacas use a communal bathroom. Which means all of the waste is in one area. What clean animals! I know this particular alpaca farm is open to the public again for one day at Christmastime.

As we were leaving, an older gentleman was trailing behind an older woman with a little girl of about six. He stopped me and said, “Do you see my wife and granddaughter? We are going to see the alpacas. Are the alpacas this way?”

I stopped to chat with him and told him to just proceed up the hill and they will open the gate for him and his family.

He said, “I am from Peru. That is where the alpaca is from. I miss them.”

I asked him how long it had been since he had visited his country. He told me a few years.

I also told him that of all of the countries in the world, Peru is number one on my must visit list.

He smiled and said, “Aaahhhhh. Machu Pichu. The most beautiful place in the world.”

I said, “Yes! I want to go there so badly!”

He smiled fondly at me and his eyes got a faraway look as he remembered his homeland.

We wished each other a good day and we parted ways. But it was really an interesting conversation for my kids to hear. And I hope him and his family had a beautiful day!

  1. I work at a secondary school in Australia and we have Alpacas on the campus. At the moment we have 3 babies. They are gorgeous. The kids love them, they look after them and take them to shows, sell the wool etc. They are such funny animals.

    • That is so cool! The babies are adorable. What a great program. Thank you so much for sharing! I can now imagine them on the other side of the world with those kids. : )

      Have a lovely week!

    • They do look like they are sporting teenage hairdos. I just think they are adorable. I cannot wait to go back at Christmastime. I hear Santa will be making an appearance.

      Have a lovely day!

    • They really are! I wish we had the space for a couple. They are adorable and pay for themselves.

      Have a great evening!

  2. You are the coolest mom! You also don’t need to worry about not wearing make-up “cause you look great without it! Those Alpacas look like walking stuffed animals. Really interesting that they don’t have upper teeth and poop in a communal area!!

    • Thank you so much Cynthia! You are so sweet. I can only try. I know the kids had a great time because they both thanked me for taking them.

They are the coolest animals! I cannot wait to go back and see Santa at Christmastime. Everyone who volunteers there is passionate about the animal.

I hope your Tuesday is happy!

  3. I just found your blog – I think from Pleated Poppy? Anyway, I LOVE it! I’ve been reading through your archives and enjoying every post. I’m sitting in my computer room chuckling as I read. I’m a mom of three boys. I love finding a great blog that I can enjoy when I’m taking a “break” from being a mom. You are such a great writer. I am always so thankful to bloggers who take the time to share their talents. It inspires me! Your clothes and house and you are just beautiful! Thanks again for brightening my day!

    • Hi Jill! You are so sweet! I am so happy that you found my blog. I very much appreciate it. Three boys? You are busy! My good friend has three boys and she is always on the go. Actually, I have a lot of friends with three boys and they are all busy! You deserve your down time, for sure!

Your comments truly made my night. Thank you so much! : )

  4. You always find the best outings Jenni!! I love your outfit too!! Perfect for a Alpaca outing 🙂 I recall seeing that necklace on line. It looks so much more lovely on you than it does on line!!

    • Thank you Sayaka! I try to have fun. ; )

I do love that necklace. And for $10, it is really hard to beat. I first saw it on Casey at Veggies and Glitter. She inspired me.

Thank you for the sweet words. I really appreciate it.

  5. What a lovely thing to take your kids to! I love your alpaca-viewing outfit, too! Victor says all alpacas look like Rhianna, haha.
Here’s an awesomely inappropriate alpaca story for you, feel free to delete it 😉
Victor and I were in Germany with Second Wife, watching TV in the hotel room. There was a show on about singles looking for love, and one of them was an alpaca farmer named Hartwig something. He starts by showing the TV crew around his farm, and introducing the viewers to his “stud alpaca”, Prince something-or-other, who never gets his wool shaved off because that would interfere with his mojo. Then, while he turns to the camera and starts talking about how he feels he has a lot to offer to a future wife, a female alpaca is introduced to Prince’s stall in the background. “I just want to find the right lady,” says Hartwig, raising his voice to be heard over the two alpacas as things start getting romantic in the background. I literally laughed until I cried. 😉

    • Ha! That is hilarious! I do not know if my mind knows the word “inappropriate.” ; )

I wish I would have seen that. It sounds awesome! I wonder if he ever found love. Now you make me want to google it! Great story. Thanks for making me smile, especially today.

Behave ; ) and enjoy some more inappropriate television for me!

      • Oh, he did! They showed him two or three years later with a wife and two little kids, still living on the alpaca farm! And he was very happy. 🙂

The sound the alpacas make are the funniest. They sounds so worried! And when Prince was having his moment of TV fame, the noises got louder and louder… I think that was the best bit. 😉 Now, whenever Victor and I see toy alpacas displayed – and they seem to be weirdly popular – one of us will make that sound. Because yeah, we are sooo mature.

      • Oh my gosh! Thank you for the follow-up! I am so happy. Of course, ?i do not know him, but I just love the story. I can completely picture it!

Hmmmm. Do I see a new music video? “What does the alpaca say?” Actually, when we were there they were humming. It was super cute!

        Magic thoughts your way!

  6. I love these pictures – they’re so awkward and adorable! What a fun and cost-conscious way to spend the day. Sweet animals bring out the kid in everyone, I think. We used to have a baby animal farm by us that we’d go an visit. The baby pigs and cows were so sweet. Visiting animals is just feel-good experience; that’s why I think that animal rehabilitation programs in hospitals and prisons are such great ideas.

    • Hi Liz! You are so right. Animals are just wonderful creatures. I think you can kind of figure your own self out easier when you have an animal who loves you. At least, that is how it is in my case. My doggies have uplifted my spirits all day today and provided constant laughter with their antics!

      Have a fantastic Friday!
