I married my husband because of Piers Anthony

Growing up, the world of Xanth (Piers Anthony’s creation) was so enrapturing. I loved the pun adapted world.

If you have not read these books, the synopsis is there is a magical world bordering our own (but our world is called Mundania, because we have no magic). Every person in Xanth has a magical talent and they often times find themselves trudging along Xanth’s paths to ask a question to the Good Magician Humphrey (who knows all). There are princesses and goblins. There are panty trees and pie trees. It is a great series for a young adult interested in fantasy.

As a young girl, I found the Adult Conspiracy titillating. The first book I read in the series was OGRE, OGRE. I loved Smash (an ogre) and his love story with Tandy (the nymph girl). I was hooked! I read every book in the series and impatiently waited for the next one to come out.

When my husband and I were on our third date, which also happened to be the third day we had seen each other, I broached the subject of fantasy and science fiction. I knew I really liked him, but I wasn’t sure we had the same interests.

I was reading HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY at the time. I asked him if he had read it. Not only had he, but he loved it!

Hmmm. I decided to up the ante.

“Have you ever heard of Xanth?”. I asked. I was sure he would fail the question as many had before him (well, not too many, I’m not that kind of girl).

“By Piers Anthony?”. He replied.

The universe stopped. I swear I felt every atom of my being melting and then rejoining together. I knew I would marry him. He had been to that world, just like I had! He understood.

We were married three months later. Since then we have shared a love for many more books and many more worlds, including this one. It has been a wonderful adventure. We always buy older editions of the XANTH series whenever we stumble upon them. Because we know it all started with Xanth and an author I will be forever indebted to, Piers Anthony.

Thanks for stopping by! Have you been to Xanth? What are you currently reading?

Princess Maxi Dresses

It is a gathering of skirts day! I love a long flowing dress. I do not think there is anything more feminine. What girl doesn’t want to feel like a princess? As long as you aren’t wearing a tiara, I think it is okay to dress for a fantasy world. Of course, this is coming from a girl who wants a hobbit house.

Free People Vintage Maxi dress

As soon as I saw this dress I knew it had to be mine! The pattern on it is fantastic. It is very reminiscent of otomi fabric, but smaller and more pastel. I am going to be honest, I tried this dress on for the picture, and then quickly took it off and stashed it back in my closet. It is insanely expensive (at least for this little ol’ country girl’s heart). So, I almost feel too guilty to own it. Almost. I did get an “oops we goofed percentage off” code for it, but it is still a hard price to swallow! Tell me it was worth it! (don’t tell me if it’s not. I think I’m in love). Free People Embroidered Fable Maxi Dress, Free People Raw Tulle Maxi Slip, Anthropologie Beaded Geometry Bag, vintage boots and Free People Timer Pendant

Recently, my husband and I went on a wonderful quick trip to Seattle. I wore this dress to Pike Place Market. It was so much fun walking around such a historical place in an old fashioned dress. I also wore this dress on the airplane ride home. It was so comfortable! I felt like I was wearing pajamas.

The best part about wearing this dress is the way little girls smile at you.

This ensemble reminds me of THE PRINCESS BRIDE. The best movie that ever was! The color of the dress is the sweetest berry. The tulle slip is sexy and sweet. I highly recommend both. Here is a link to the fable dress

Free People Got You Hooked Maxi, Anthropologie Embroidered Mesh Chemise, and Free People Timer pendant

Yes! I am wearing my nightgown under my dress! But I love getting multiple uses out of items. I am kind of proud of myself for pairing them together. This dress from Free People is a very reasonable price at $88. I love this look. I feel very medieval in it. I wore this to THE HOBBIT movie and feel like I enjoyed the movie more, because I dressed the part. Yes, I am a dork! Here is the link to the dress

Pioneer Woman’s Perfect Potato Soup

This soup is wonderful!

Here is a link to the recipe

I purchased the onions, celery and carrots prechopped in this fantastic container from Trader Joes, because I am lazy and this is easy. You mean you will chop everything for me and all I have to do is pay double for it? Sold. It really is only $2.99 and worth every single beautiful penny. I do not know if the measurements in the container are accurate with the recipe, but the soup turned out fantastic.

I froze three slices of bacon for 15 minutes before I chopped it up. This made cutting the bacon much more manageable. I also did not need to drain any fat.

I have a weird and totally wasteful way of cutting my potatoes. But I hate, let me repeat, hate potato slicers. I do not recommend this; I do not know if you could lose a finger doing this. But again, it is easy for me to do. And easier is always better, right? I’ll let you know as I type with my stubs.

I take a dirty potato. I first cut the top and bottom off. I then slice all of the skin off with my knife. I rinse it and then dice it up. Do it like she shows on her recipe page. This is really easy. I place the finished product in a colander and when I am done with all of the potatoes I give them a final rinse and pat down.

The Pioneer Woman adds the potatoes with the celery, carrot and onion mixture and cooks them at the beginning together. I cooked my celery, onion, carrot mixture for an additional 5 minutes before I added the potatoes because I wanted my onions soft.

If you are going to make soups, you must get yourself one of these handy dandy little immersion blenders. They are amazing. They come in a variety of different colors, which is always one of my favorite aspects of kitchen utensils. But the best, most knee dropping to the ground worship-able aspect of this little gadget, is the blade pops off and is dishwasher safe. This one was $29.99 from SurLaTable and it was a gift from my sister a couple of years ago. Thanks M!

Remove 1/3 of the soup and set aside. Blend the remaining soup in the pot. Add soup back into the pot and stir.

I followed Ree’s recipe, except I only used 6 cups of chicken stock instead of 8 after I read reviews complaining their soup was runny. I am glad I cut the chicken stock down to 6 cups. I will probably do 5 next time, because I want it a touch bit thicker. I also ended up adding 1/2 teaspoon and a couple of shakes of my salt shaker more salt and 1/2 teaspoon more pepper at the end to add flavor. Taste before ladling it into bowls.

I served it with corn bread I made from Marie Calendar’s mix I buy at Costco. All you do is add water and it is delicious. I believe it is 5.50 for this huge bag, with 5 batches of mix inside. It is only sold around summertime and I stock up when I see it.

This soup was AMAZING! I love Black Angus’ baked potato soup, and this was better! My husband raved and raved about it. It was so easy (with the help of Trader Joe’s) and took me about 40 minutes start to finish. Plus there were tons of leftovers.

Who Needs More Seating?

Target has a new line of home products out called THRESHOLD. They remind me of the years Target would do that wonderful GLOBAL BAZAAR and host aisle upon aisle of pretty finds from around the world. I scored so many pieces during those clearances (which is probably why they discontinued it).

My favorite items from the new line are the rope products. They have large and small wooden picture frames intermingled with colorful rope. I cannot resist them. In the past two months I have purchased four (thanks mom for the gift card : ) ). Two small and two large. They run $14.99 for the small and $19.99 for the large. They are lickably beautiful.

20130316-120908.jpg

The other day I was wandering the aisles, because they sell my children’s orthodontic brushes pretty reasonably, and I found myself in the small THRESHOLD aisle. There were two beautiful rope benches side by side. My heart started pounding. I loved the picture frames, but these benches were the picture frames on steroids. Here is the link for the bench

20130316-120949.jpg

I was not sure where I would put them and so I left them there crying for their mommy to take them home. They were $99.99 each and I did not want to make a rash decision. I went home with my sad bag of dental products.

I spoke to my husband about it and “we”agreed the benches would fit perfectly behind the couch in our living room. I went to Target the next evening. As I walked into the store, I scanned everyone’s cart, certain it would hold my babies. But everyone had their cart stuffed with their own screaming wants. I made it to the aisle and there they were, still paired together. They didn’t even miss me! I snatched them up and quickly paid for them with my Target Debit card (saving 5%).

20130316-121028.jpg

I think they look really cute where they are and as my husband says with his face straight, “They are great, because we always need more seating.” Oh honey, don’t you know one day we are going to throw a fabulous party and won’t you be sad if someone is left standing?

My son has found a new use for them in the meantime.

What have been your screaming wants recently?
